Seattle Post-Intelligencer editorial, Aug. 27 "Credibility Taking Hits"
The Swift Boat Veterans for Truth campaign is taking on water. Hole after hole has been blown in the group's credibility. We hope the damage is sufficient to finally sink 30-year-old anguish over the Vietnam War as a campaign issue.Seattle Post-Intelligencer news story, Sep. 9 "Bush suspended from flying for failing to meet standards"
The Washington Post reported last night that Bush failed to carry out a direct order to undertake a medical exam that was required for him to remain a qualified pilot.[citing the now infamous 60 minutes fake documents]
Seattle Post-Intelligencer editorial, Sep. 9 "Where was George?"
If it's fair game to question whether Kerry earned the medals he was awarded for his tour of duty in the Vietnam War, it's fair game, too, to question whether Bush earned what amounted to his deferment from that war.Yes, it is fair game to raise such questions. But it is also expected that newspapers which raise these questions also provide reasonable answers. Instead, the P-I only rejects out of hand all of the facts raised by the Swift Vets, while also legitimizing the fraud of the 60 Minutes letters.
Seattle Post-Intelligencer news article, Sep. 10 "White House dismisses memos on Bush Guard duty"
The White House dismissed as old news yesterday memos indicating President Bush did not meet military standards while he served in the Texas Air National Guard. It wasn't just a document expert, but several experts. In fact, I haven't heard of any such experts who vouch for the documents' authenticity. Curiously, the same article spends most of its time validating the forged documents' assertions:But the authenticity of the memos was questioned by the son of the late officer who reportedly wrote them. One of the writer's fellow officers and a document expert also said yesterday the documents appear to be forgeries.
The newly discovered documents were written by Lt. Col. Jerry Killian, the commander of Bush's squadron. Killian died in 1984.This WaPo story (available early enough yesterday evening to make it into today's Seattle Times) does a more thorough job of exposing the 60 Minutes forgeries than the limp-wristed Cox story that the P-I ran with. I can only imagine why the P-I chose the Cox story over the WaPo story.
What's that deafening noise of water rushing into holes? It would have to be the sound of the P-I's "Credibility Taking Hits"!

Posted by: pi=lame on September 10, 2004 12:49 PMThe widow somehow knows that her husband didn't keep files... Except that as a officer in the military, file keeping isn't really an option, and the likelihood that his wife would know the details of any particular files from 30 years ago is slim to none.
Bush's pay records indicate a lapse in service, and that has never been disputed by the White House. You can barely so much as show up for duty in the military without generating a form somewhere, but mysteriously, all Bush can come up with from that six month period in '73 is proof that he went to the dentist. He was absent without leave in the service of the country, gaming the system and getting away with it.
Posted by: natasha on September 10, 2004 02:32 PMAnd you know this how? Are you his wife?
The memos are fake. Only a blinded partisan, or a total fool could look at the supposed 1973 document and compare it with a similarly constructed Word document today and NOT come to the conclusion the memos are fake. There is no difference between them.
Finally, it would be appreciated if you could provide us with some examples of your previous outrage over a president's military service. You know. In 1992. Oh, and 1996.
Posted by: jimg on September 11, 2004 11:04 AMThe Democrat partisans and hacks are desperate, pathetic and obviously losing hope. Is this all they have, smears about Bush's National Guard service in the 70's?
If they have such great ideas, let's have a debate. I prefer a candidate whose is talking about the future and a record of accomplishment during some relevant recent period.
