Daily Briefs

Both the Times and the P-I have articles today about the newly released documents showing that the Ukraine County elections office attempted unsuccessfully to verify signatures for the 561 573 595 735 723 magical mystery ballots, even before the first certified count more than a month ago.

The Washington Supreme Court will be hearing oral arguments in the Democrats' appeal to count every (previously rejected signature-challenged) ballot on Wednesday, December 22 at 9:30am

National bloggers are having almost as much fun with Washington's Ukraine-style election fiasco as we are. Michelle Malkin and PoliPundit both post on it often. The Power Line (Time's blog of the year!) mentioned it the other day. Richard Baehr of the American Thinker had a nice piece which was also on Real Clear Politics.

I'm also finding links in my traffic log from L.A.'s Stranded on Blue Islands and PrestoPundit, The Viking Pundit from Western Massachusetts, David Wissing in Maryland and others.

Closer to home, many WA bloggers are doing yeoman's work covering this media circus: among them, the indispensable Tim Goddard, Mac of Pull On Superman's Cape, Alexander of Hamilton's Pamphlets, Nathan of the Pajama Jihad, the OrbusMax and many others who I'll be sure to mention.

I went to SeaTac airport last night to meet my mother who was arriving on a United flight from Chicago. The fancy-schmancy electronic board told me her baggage would be at claim 16, then 13, then 11, the latter of which belonged to Alaska and Southwest respectively. I consulted with the clerk at the United baggage counter, who told me
"No, your mother will be at claim 15. The board is programmed by the Port of Seattle and always makes mistakes. We've given up trying to correct it."
"I guess the board must be operated by the same people who run the elections department", I replied.
She laughed, knowing exactly what I meant.

One of everybody's all-time favorite Christmas songs is Shchedrik, often known as the Ukrainian Carol of the Bells. A MIDI file of this lovely melody (albeit the George Winston version) is here.

I'm pleased to announce a Shchedrik Lyrics Contest. Please e-mail me your best satirical lyrics about the Ukraine County elections debacle, written to the tune of Shchedrik. I'll post the best entries and will come up with some sort of real prize for the winner.

E-mail me at: theshark at usefulwork dot com.

A history of Shchedrik is here. Original Ukrainian lyrics are here. This page has both a transliteration and translation of the original into English.
