Ballots roasting on an open fire

FYI to Dino Rossi supporters -- this evening the following statement went out...

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Mary Lane

Dec. 23, 2004 (425) 646-7202

Bellevue, WA – Today Dino Rossi issued the following statement:

“This is supposed to be the season for Christmas and Hanukkah, not campaigns, but this year, unfortunately, we don’t yet have a governor-elect.

“Like many people across Washington, I’m very concerned about the integrity of this election process, and I’m also very concerned that not all votes are being treated equally.

“Earlier this week, I asked the Supreme Court not to change the rules of the recount. On Tuesday, however, the Supreme Court did change the recount rules, and allowed previously rejected ballots to be reconsidered.

“Many hundreds of previously rejected ballots in King County were counted, but there are hundreds more of wrongfully rejected ballots that remain uncounted. We have affidavits so far from 300 legal voters across Washington whose ballots were wrongfully rejected. The rules were changed for a select group of ballots in King County, but not for many other ballots all across the state. That is wrong. If the rules can be changed for a select group of voters in King County, then the new rules should apply to everyone, equally.

“Under the new rules established by the Supreme Court, if your vote was wrongfully thrown out through no fault of your own, your vote should be counted. Whether your signature was mistakenly challenged or whether you’re a member of the military who didn’t receive your ballot on time, your vote should count. Anything else is undemocratic.

“To make sure that every wrongfully disenfranchised voter has the opportunity to have his or her vote counted, we are going to take some time to follow up with county canvassing boards across Washington and ask those boards to reconsider wrongfully rejected ballots.

“I know many Washingtonians are hoping this will end soon, but I’m also sure that people across this state want a clean election and a legitimate governor-elect. At this point, we have neither.

“Finally, Terry and my children and I want to wish everyone a happy holiday season, and I again want to thank the people of Washington for their kind-hearted support.”

1. This probably should have happened earlier. I know, I know, we play by the rules, but playing by the rules has gotten us Governor-Elect Gregoire, and it might be too late.

2. I think Washingtonians are behind him in this, because a survey earlier this week indicated that 2/3 of them still believe that Dino won, even if x-tine declares victory after the 3rd count. And his favorables are much higher than hers. SHE is the one they are sick of, not him.

3. I wonder why the dems are all of the sudden for "taking the high road" - what are THEY afraid of? Rossi is a smart guy and I think his supporters will follow his lead. He knows what he's up against and what cards are left to be played.

4. RATs are always for the high road when it involves a double standard...IOW, Pubs acting honorably, as defined by RATs.

5. This is a smart, measured approach. By taking this approach, he's staying above the mud-wrestling, and seeking a way for the process to have some legitimacy with an outside shot at restoring his rightful victory. At the same time, he's positioned himself to make a graceful exit that preserves the good will he has built up, if and when that becomes the best option. That would still win him the political and moral high ground, while painting CG as the State's Thief Executive. Merry Christmas Christine!

6. I agree, all voters votes should be counted. The Only ones that King County held up their certification for were votes in their boxes. Alaska has valid votes for this state. Many other states most likely do too. The Military Ballots are an absolute necessity to count. After all we want every and I mean every vote in King county by a REGISTERED AND LEGAL citizen to be counted. I am sure the State and Federal Supreme Courts will agree that King County cannot choose which areas of votes they want to count, while no other areas in this state were given ample just cause. This is half time folks, there is a whole next half to this ball game. If anyone needs help validating these votes just ask!

7. When Cook County managed to find/make enough ballots to put Xine up by 7 votes or 10 votes or whaterver it was, the Dems should have yanked their case in front of the Supreme Court. But they got greedy, or had set in motion events they couldn't countrol, and there's nothing that says that the GOP has to sit quietly by and let an obvious 14th Amendment/Equal Protection violation stand.

8. Yo, Rossi, wake up--you don't "ask," you sue! You don't try to win a messy hand recount--you sue to have the whole hand recount thrown out altogether. I hope that's your plan B, Dino.

9. Does anyone know of a legal mechanism by which a voter can find out if his/her ballot was counted or rejected?

Even if it means showing up in person at the King County elections office - I'm sure a few of us are more than willing to do that.

Posted by: Larry on December 24, 2004 01:59 PM
10. This close race brought to light various mistakes King County has made. That is a good thing, particularly if King County makes necessary changes to regain voter trust.

Until then, the only way to gain some sort of election legitamacy is to encourage legal filings to be reviewed and judged by the courts. Until each constituency feels they were able to present their concerns to a court of law and get a ruling, it will be just partisian bickering.

If Rossi doesn't go to court, Christine's governorship will be questioned more, not less. Where legitimacy is suspect, I'd rather the Supreme Court make a ruling than the King County canvassing board.

11. There's a lot of stange stuff going on in this recount mess here. What's most strange is how easily both Dino and Christine change their point of view and wording at a moment's notice to fit their circumstances.

For example, here Dino calls King County ballots taht were wrongfully and previously rejected as "previously rejected" ballots, but the wrongfully and previously rejected ballots in other counties are simply called "wrongfully rejected" ballots.

Also, Dino states: “Earlier this week, I asked the Supreme Court not to change the rules of the recount. On Tuesday, however, the Supreme Court did change the recount rules, and allowed previously rejected ballots to be reconsidered."

But Dino then continues and calls anything less than having wrongfully and previously rejected ballots counted "undemocratic." So was he asking the state SC to not "change the rules" and keep the recount system undemocratic?

It cuts both ways, however. Christine is out calling for closure, an end to the madness -- but is she simply in the Christmas spirit or has she suddenly had a politically-motivated change-of-heart? Previously, she was calling for every vote to be counted, no matter the costs (both financially and time costs). Now, ironically, Repbulicans are espousing a "Count every vote" mantra.

Merry Christmas.

12. Chris - Rossi's now asking that every county be allowed to recanvass votes previously rejected - since the SC allowed King County to do so. In other words, they opened that door to a select group of voters, NOT all voters. In other words, treat every like vote the same. If the Supreme Court had said this is a recount - recount the same votes, than all voters would have had equal treatment.

Posted by: CP on December 24, 2004 02:26 PM
13. Yes, CP, because we seem to have had a mantra by Gregoireovich of "Count every rejected vote---IN KING COUNTY!"

Posted by: Michele on December 24, 2004 03:11 PM
14. Rossi was elected governor. And he will take office.

The hand recount violated the Fourteenth Amendment's "equal protection" clause two ways: different rules for different counties, and changes in rules in certain counties.

I don't give a rat's behind about reforming King County's procedures. And neither does King County! If wrongdoing is found, the perps will be fined or go to jail.

Start practicing now: Governor Dino Rossi . Get used to it.

15. So anyone want to guess at how large the protests will be on inaug day in Olympia when Gregoire is sworn in? I know I will be there.

Posted by: Kyle on December 24, 2004 03:30 PM
16. He'll be at detox within a year.

Posted by: Sot on December 24, 2004 05:18 PM
17. Normally, I would have opted for Dino to concede, just to get it over with. But we know that Dino's pro-business mindset is exactly what this state needs. Four more years of Democratic run Olympia is bad for the state economy, so Dino needs to fight this--not just for political expediency, and not just for his right to sit as the true Governor-elect--but for the good of state economy.

Oh--and stop subscribing to the times and PI--that biased headline "Third Time's a Charm" is just shameful. It should have read, "Gregoire only satisfied with however many recounts it takes to put her on top."

Posted by: Noel on December 24, 2004 08:38 PM
18. Merry Christmas, One thing I think most of you are forgetting is that King County had not certified yet. The Supremes allowed them to recanvass because certification had not taken place. The rest of the counties certified before the ruling. They will not allow them to go back and recanvass after official certification.

19. An embarassemnt.

All along it was if the shoe was on the other foot, we would concede, we would never put the state through this...the democrats are trying to steal the election.

Now that the shoe is on the other foot, surprise, the republicans are doing everything that the democrats did...geez, what a bunch of lying, cheating, election stealing hypocrites.

Naturally, the republicans claim the democrats created this problem. BS.

It is all about saying and doing whatever needs to be said to get your guy in the office == even if what you say and do is 180 degrees from what you said or did before. A total embarassment.

Neither party has a leg to stand on. All you supporting Dino not conceding should be ashamed of yourselves for pretending you would do the honorable thing if Dino were behind after recounting.

Total, unmitigated hogwash.

Sad, again.

20. Tom

what did you expect dino to do?Just roll
over and play dead.look there is a bit of difference
here.Remember he won the 1st and 2nd counts.they
are trying to steal an election.Know one
here is being a hypcrite.Dino is just trying
fight for what he already won!!

Posted by: phil spackman on December 25, 2004 11:13 AM
21. Phil...no, he won the first two counts (as provided by law) and lost the third and most recent (as provided by law).

No, I didn't expect him to roll over because he is a politician above all else (do, say, anything to get elected). Does this not make you scared about all his campaign promises? He said whatever he needed to to get elected...but as this shows, he can go back on his word without much effort.

You see, he asked Gregoire to concede after two recounts (with a third, as provided by law, pending). IF he truly had any conviction, any core beliefs, any sense of right-wrong, he could not possibly do something other than he asked his opponent to do now that the tables have turned.

Of course he's a hypocrite...this is the pure definition.

Posted by: tom on December 25, 2004 12:55 PM
22. "and lost the third and most recent (as provided by law)."

And Rossi is now exploring his *legal* options....as provided by law.

Why is it...that the Dems are only interested in the *law* as it pertains to THEIR victory?

Why is it...when Republicans stand up for themselves and finally refuse to lay down and die in the flurry of lies and fraud tactics launched against them...the Dems begin chastising them and claim they are acting like....like...gasp! DEMS!

Talk about the ultimate insult! To have a Dem call your assertivness - A Democrat tactic! ACK!

No matter how ugly this election gets, how far the Republicans have to push, how much King County fraud is exposed.......the Republicans will always proceed with grace and legitimacy and honor - none of which can be equated with the Dems.

23. I don't think it's at all contradictory for the republicans to now want to count every vote. Their arguement to the supreme court was not to count every vote. Since the supreme court decided in favor of counting every vote, it is only logical that the Republicans now do so, other wise, what King County got to do is different than what the rest of the state got to do. They played by the rules as they interpretted them - now that interpretation has been defined by the Supreme Court and thye are going to abide by it. I know Rossi personally - he is not a politician. He is a family man and then a business man. He has said repeatedly that he isn't worried about a second term. He wants just one term to turn things around. If he choses to run for the second term, he'll decide that later. He isn't worried about a second term because he will do what is right this time out, not what will wash with one or both the parties. boy do we ever need that kind of leadership in Olympia right now.

24. The only reason for a 3rd hand recount was it's propensity for error and inaccuracy. So given that Christine "found her votes" she will have no credibility. Sadly this state can't afford 1 minute of her in that office. She will make Gray Davis look like a Genius, at our expense. The Republicans haven't flip-flopped at all on this issue, they didn't think votes should be added to recounts that weren't in the first tally. There is no hypocrisy in the fact that the supreme court just legislated a change in the law. Now Dino must follow the new law, and the Dems and Courts will not extend this to any more "disenfranchised voters who votes must ALL count" to ensure their stolen victory stands. Classic Demo Dogma. IF Christine wins, she loses... she will be a lame duck on day 1. One more thing; I hope all you LOSERTARIAN Bennett supporters are happy with your stupidity. Your principled stand just put someone on the threshold of taking office that is 180 deg opposite of your positions.
