A blank canvas

In an article by Chris McGann of the Seattle After-intelligence Post-Intelligencer, a subtle lapsus calami reveals much:

Borrowing the rhetoric from the Democrats, Rossi says it's all about having every legitimate vote be counted.

"Whether your signature was mistakenly challenged or whether you're a member of the military who didn't receive your ballot on time, your vote should count," Rossi said in statement Thursday.

Republicans say they have roughly 300 signed affidavits from registered voters who said their votes were not counted.

It all comes down to the definition of legitimate.

Democrats and Reed contend that the 1,718 additional votes that turned up statewide during the manual recount were counted because they were discovered within the time period established by state law.

But now that all of Washington's 39 counties have certified the results of their manual recounts, Reed and the Democrats say it's too late for the Rossi votes in question.

They're uncounted votes, not necessarily Rossi votes....

The story concludes with a mind-bending aside from Gregoire quoted earlier:

Gregoire said Thursday that she has "every confidence" in Washington's election system.

"I think we have been a model to the rest of the nation and the world at large about how an election system, as close as this one is, can be done with the highest of quality... This is the biggest display of democracy I have ever seen and I am proud of it and I think it's an inspiration."

...because it was made to work in her favor, eventually.

Of course it's still a tie, by her own definition.

1. The unmitigated gall of that woman will be her downfall. Her statements do nothing but fuel the flames of this contested election. Is she really that stupid? Yes it is still a tie - 65% of the voters in fact think Rossi is the REAL governor elect.

2. The Ukraine is about to vote. I asked some of their folks to come over to show us how to have an honest election. Just out of curiosity, Does Putin know Gregoire?

3. Gregoire, like Bill Clinton before her has made quite a statement. If there is one word that really describes Democrats, it is "audacity."

4. If she thinks we've been a 'MODEL' of 'HIGHEST QUALITY', then she is totally unqualified to be governor based on sheer inability to discern problems where they exist. With statements like this, I predict her approval rating will continue to fall.

One of the things I've noticed about Dino -- his situation appraisal abilities are first-rate.

5. Stefan,

I live in Virginia and I want to tell you that you run a first-rate web log. I even tell all my friends and family to read soundpolitics.com!

In 1994, I lived in Maryland and worked on Ellen Sauerbrey's race for Governor. The final vote tally came down to a difference of about 6,000 votes. The Dems pulled shenanigans then, too. The total vote for heavily Democratic Baltimore City was significantly more than the total of the votes of each precinct. There was also poor security for voting machines, lots of people registered to vote at vacant lots, etc. Anyway, the Dems got to steal that election and misrule Maryland for an additional eight years.

Good luck to you, Dino Rossi, and the long-suffering voters and taxpayers of Washington State.

6. Thank you Ron J. - You would think with a paltry 130 vote steal in progress, the GOP could stop this theft in its tracks - thanks for the support!

7. Gregoire said Thursday .... "I think we have been a model to the rest of the nation"....

Well, at least she's thinking! That hasn't happened in quite some time...
