FLASH: Ferguson trounces Edmonds

In a victory for sane grassroots Democrats over the corrupt Ron Sims machine, King County Councilman Bob Ferguson trounced Carolyn Edmonds at this evening's Democratic Party nominating convention. So reports a friendly Democrat who was there. It wasn't even close. Although Edmonds was endorsed by nearly every hack Democrat politician in the area including Ron Sims himself, and although she raked in far more money from the usual Democrat moneybag donors, Ferguson smoked Edmonds in the floor vote 381 -288.

As a current constituent of Bob Ferguson (though not after the redistricting), I have a high opinion of him. I'm encouraged that the grassroots Democrats used good judgment on this one. Edmonds said in this morning's KUOW interview that she would run in the primary no matter how the convention vote went and I would expect the Sims Machine to continue to back rubber stamp Carolyn Edmonds. But I also expect Ferguson to fare even better against Edmonds in a district wide election. He certainly has more to offer.

UPDATE: Wednesday's P-I has the story. I don't often agree with State Democratic Party Chairman Paul Berendt, but in this case I do:

"It's no great surprise to me that Bob won. He's smarter, he's harder working and Carolyn has made a lot of people angry."

1. Perhaps the grass roots Dems feel the same way we do. No more telling us what is good for us?

2. And this is a wonderful portending from the Democrat electorate of what awaits Sims. If a Sims backed candidate does this poorly for one Council Seat, might there be some turncoats voting for Irons?

The plot thickens.

3. I hate to point out the obvious, but how can you have an all powerful corrupt political machine capable of fixing elections if you can't even control your precinct chair people?

Blog fraud at its best.

4. Good job for Ferguson. I think that a lot of the Dem PCO's in the 32nd legislative district (i.e. most of Edmonds' original district) supported him. Those folks like Maralyn Chase and Maggi Fimia, and don't particularly care for a lot of the other Democrat leadership -- such as Edmonds and her supporters.

Will Edmonds drop out of the race? Will she run as a Democrat anyway? Will she run as an Independent?

This has got to be bad news for Ron Sims. But can David Irons take any advantage of a lot of the Dem rank and file not particularly caring for Sims and his allies?

5. JDB,

The corrupt political machine isn't 'all-powerful', unless you think that it's a diety. I wouldn't be surprised. Anyhoo, the corrupt political machine finally went too far with the past election, and the sane people spoke up. It's exactly what we've been hoping for. How dense are you? Do you unknowingly answer your own questions all the time? (Don't answer that - it's r-h-e-t-o-r-i-c-a-l.)

6. I think you hit the nail on the head Stefan!

Edmonds was endorsed by Sims.

7. Wow...I didn't think they were capable of a decison like this. Maybe there IS some sanity among Dems.

Carolyn has made a lot of people angry? Do tell...
Carolyn dear, if ONLY you'd gone on KVI...

8. This is great news! Now Steve Pyeatt (R) might have a chance to move into the top two after primaries should Edmonds split the D ticket!

9. I'm surprised (in hindsight) by the result. The vote allocating scheme served to increase the influence of party hacks.

As I recall Edmonds was a supporter of the "Bums on Wheels" Tent City placement in her district.

10. From the P-I article referenced above:

Last night's voting was done by 150 precinct officers. The votes of those who took part were weighted -- from one to eight per person -- depending on what share of each precinct's presidential vote went to John Kerry in 2004.

This strikes me as an odd way of doing business. I guess it is an attempt to dilute the representation of Republican precincts. Fair enough in a party primary. But has anyone heard of this kind of thing being done before?

11. One down and a few more to go!

I just e-mailed Edwards (I live in her district) and told her how happy I was that she will be gone. I also told her that I will "cross-over" if need be to ensure that she is in the same unemployment line as her pal Ron Sims.

Time to, "Kick The Bums Out!"

12. Ferguson is known for his grass roots doorbelling campaigns. Fantastic that he won out over Edmonds. Maybe an endorsement by Sims was the kiss of death for her. Now, if David Irons can benefit from the rift in this district and pull in votes, that would be fantastic!

13. South County--
Tolerance Police have reported your comment about Tent City. Be advised you are to appear at the Sims' Good Home Training Refresher Course.

Bring a notebook, No. 2 pencil, eraser, 1,000 Krispy Kreme doughnuts and a 25 pounds of ground coffee. Credit: 8 hours of CPcE. (continuing politically-correct ed.)

In lieu of attending, you can host a 'city' on your front lawn. Happy Neighbor marketing-counseling is available to you for a nominal fee.

14. Jimmie: That was funny! This has nothing to do with this thread (I'm sorry), but I had to share this with someone. More about the eminent domain issue:

15. Isn't Sims endorsement akin to dropping your campaign into the river inside a sack of hammers?

Posted by: Andy on June 29, 2005 10:19 AM
16. Now watch Sims figure out that his endorsement is the kiss of death, then he will endorse Irons.

17. Does anyone have background info. on Roger Larson who won the D nomination for the 9th Council seat?

18. JDB - The election machine is run by Sims. The KCDP have a different boss.

19. Larry - JDB doesn't answer its own questions; the little voices in its head answer for it....

20. Maybe Ferguson is jsut a better campaigner whether it is an election or a nominating convention.

21. Hurray!! No dippy Edmonds!! occasionaly the dems get it right!!(especialy this time!)

22. Here's what's fascinating: There were two King County Councilmembers screwed by some of their colleagues in the re-districting. Steve Hammond and Bob Ferguson were hung out to dry, and their political obituaries were sent to the printer last winter.

Ah, but the power of shoe leather...

Grass roots organizing beats a bank account every time. That and, for Ferguson, the fact that Carolyn Edmonds is the worst elected public official in the history of King County (worse even than Charles O. Carroll, and you newbies can look him up). She has an unqualified talent for saying the stupidest things. Unbelievable!

And, yes, a rejection of Edmonds is a rejection of Sims since she's his personal Chatty Cathy. She can't speak unless he pulls the string.

23. South County - I'm just catching up on the day's posts. "Bums on wheels". That is too funny. I can't believe Elvis hasn't jumped in the middle of that one. He always has choice tidbits to add about tent cities . . . not in his backyard! Meanwhile, Jimmie added his nightly humor. Keep writing . . . the brilliant are fun to watch!

24. Jimmie,Peggy was right!!It sure elicited a broad smile from me!Keep up the good work!

25. Of course Bob Ferguson defeated Carolyn Edwards. He has prior experience knocking off stale incumbents who don't use their shoe leather (see: Sullivan, Cynthia).

I've known him since he was the ASUW President in the late 80's, and I'm not surprised he's done well. I just think it's too bad he didn't run against Sims in the primary for King County Executive- because I think Sims is toast, having presided over too many screwups (King County's computers, light rail, the 2002 and 2004 elections). He's had the guts to say "it's on my watch", at least, but at some point, you can the CEO.
