1. Holy Crap! I thought it would be something to get 300,000 signatures.

I think this is the first time I have felt good about anything in politics since the Election (the part about Bush winning, not the part about Dino getting robbed). It is nice to get good news, and great to see that so many people are actually paying attention to the mismanagement down thier in Olympia.

2. ...better to be a gas tax foe...than an incompetent vote-counting hoe...The voters are gently 'knocking' at the castle gates with a battering ram of sentiment..."Anybody home?!" ...as that ancient boat commander said to the timekeeper..."Ramming Speed!"

Congrats to all the hard-working volunteers. You deserve a toast! Like Concord--Shot heard 'round the Sound.

3. Ahem. Whoohoo! Now we can have real discussion on this issue and let the people decide whether this is a wise use of taxpayer money.

Posted by: SheriJo on July 8, 2005 08:26 PM
4. I can't believe so many were turned in! It was 232,000 yesterday - I thought we were going to get screwed. Thank you everybody, signers, volunteers, people who donated. I'm glad to be a part of this!

5. The people turning them in were smart enough not to show all their cards. It's like king County knowing how many votes they needed to overturn Dino's win. Hold at least enough back to counter any mistakes, real or imagined.
GREAT JOB TO ALL THE VOLUNTEERS!!!!!

7. All the union bosses and snotty lawyers, etc. couldn't beat the thousands of average janes and joes who collected sigs for this. I knew we were too much for them! ha!~

8. We need to keep up the pressure on the Queen and her Court. There are a lot of groups (mostly unions and Seattle-based Organizations)trying to paint a doomsday picture of what will happen if the tax is repealed. Additionally, they use lines like it will only cost the average taxpayer so little money (none of the predictions of how much are the same). However, they fail to mention the rising costs of goods and services that go along with the additional taxes. You know that all of the retailers will raise their prices to recover the tax increases.

9. Congratulations to all of the volunteers!
While on vacation at LongBeach, WA this week - I had the great opportunity to meet some wonderful "No New Gas Tax" - volunteers! They had a booth up at the fair/flea market...so I just had to say hi! Turns out - they are avid readers and posters on SP!!
A special Hello! to Nan!

Their booth was busy! I'm sure their effort played a major part in the success of I 912! As did the efforts of many from the SP blog!

10. I was on the steps of the capitol today when Kirby announced the total. Awesome to be a small part of this huge movement. The 175 signatures my wife and I gathered was small potatoes compared to the couple I met at the rally. The Coopers turned in 86 petitions that they collected over the past month working the parking lot of Walmart. It was a hoot when the volunteers boarded the charter bus to bring in the boxes of petitions. 12 boxes of signed petitions marched up the steps and into the SOS's office. Can't wait till November!

11. Please do not forget our dear legislators who voted for the tax and the "woe is you" song and dance they gave us if the enough signatures are collected and the PEOPLE vote for the initiative this fall.

Remember them next year when X marks the spot on the ballot.

Posted by: mel on July 8, 2005 09:20 PM
12. Well those totals will make it rather difficult to find enough "invalid" signatures. Great work folks.

Now to endure the horror of "vote by mail" in Clark County. ARGH!!!!

Posted by: Jim in Clark County on July 8, 2005 09:29 PM
13. Mel,
I know exactly what you were getting at by saying "X marks the spot on the ballot". But please people be sure to completely fill in the bubble on the ballot.

That way you are sure that the elections department in King County doesn't illegally enhance your ballot and use voter intent to make the decision for you!

14. I plan on contacting my representatives who voted for the gas tax increase and ask them how they feel about supporting this citizens initiative. I encourage everyone else to do the same and post any responses they receive. It will be interesting to see if they are still so dismissive (or defensive) as before.

15. What a week it's been! We finally got to stop bashing Joel Horn . . . he left while the getting was good . . . on to the next scam. Now we can thank and praise Brett Bader. What a fantastic job he and his cohorts did. Brett proved himself to be a brilliant strategist by playing the "we'll be lucky if we make it" card. I knew that the required number of signatures would be gathered, but I didn't think it would be so over-the-top. Luckily I had just pulled into a parking stall at the Issy post office when John Carlson had Brett announce the numbers. Wow! I could have wrecked my car . . . I was sitting there shouting and yelling with excitement. Come to think of it, the last time I parked there, I ran into a Republican legislator who voted "yes" on the gas tax. I wish he had been there today so that I could have been the first to tell him the good news! A heartfelt thank you to all of you who really worked so hard to gather signatures. A huge thanks and congratulations to my special friend, Brett! The people have spoken . . . may this be the first victory of many!

16. The SoS was in Colfax today strutting his stuff. He is shorter than I thought he would be.

Does anyone know how is the inititaive going to be worded? I did not save a copy of the petitions I sent in and I know it had the wording on them. Just want to make sure I vote the correct one!

Posted by: cc on July 8, 2005 10:15 PM
17. Now let's go after the people who fell that we are taking a step backwards and vote them out of office. and by the way ask then what was wrong with just spending the gas tax they are already getting on their needed projects.

Posted by: Frank Diteman on July 8, 2005 10:19 PM
18. YES! This is such great news!

I'd been feeling a little down, because my daughter and I only managed to collect about 50 signatures over the Independence Day weekend, before Haggens kicked us out of their parking lot in Ferndale. Every person who signed said, "I'm sure glad you're here! I've been looking for someplace where I could sign this petition." Several people said they would tell their friends. I'm certain we could have collected many more signatures, if we had been able to stay longer.

It's great to know that it was all worth it!

Posted by: KB on July 8, 2005 10:24 PM
19. Thanks, all you 'signature volunteers!'--Well done!

Now--We can look at the Legislature squarely in the eye and ask: (a-la that Robert Di Nero movie) "Are you talking to ME?!!"

Posted by: Jimmie-howya-doin on July 8, 2005 10:32 PM
20. On the Republican side:

The first on the list is Shirley Hankins from the Tri-Cities. Upon hearing that the gas tax initiative would be put in all Eastern Washington newspapers, she told people to take the petitions out of the newspaper and shred them.

Next in line is Rodney Tom, who despite having an R next to his name, has voted like a Seattle leftist during his time in Olympia. The only conceivable reason to have him in the legislature is that he votes for the Republican leadership. That's about it. We can do better.

Next is Beverly Woods, who, upon being asked to sign the petition at a local Republican meeting, laughed at the idea. As Kirby would say, she's laughing at you. How about we laugh her out of office?

26. So.... wherte's ol JDB? Didn't he write this:

The initiative probably needs at least 280,000 to qualify. I would not be at all surprised if there is a higher than normal level of improper/double signatures given the haste and emotions at play. I would guess that they turn in 245-260,000 total signatures, and the total legal signatures turns out to be more in the 175,000 range, if not lower.

If the I-912 people are honest, they will admit defeat and move on if they have under 275,000 signatures. However, given that the far right desire to make a propaganda point over anything substantive, I expect them to claim that Sam Reed and others are fraudulently checking the petitions.

One does have to wonder if the powers that be at Fisher Broadcasting are wondering if they should have made money by running adverstising instead of giving up a couple of hours an hours a day for free infomercials.

30. Another "R" who voted for the tax increase is Tom Campbell of Roy. I personally talked to him and he insisted it was the right thing to do for Pierce County. I told him that I appreciated him calling me, but I disagree. I wonder what he thinks now. One thing to keep in mind though, is that we have to fight the keep washington rolling campaign. They say that they have to work harder to convince people it is bad news for the state. I am afraid they are going to up their mis-information campaign. Our work is not yet done. Great news today though!

I had a feeling we would get enough signatures when I went to Pierce County drop off yesterday and the desk was covered with petitions.

31. The Keep Washington Rolling in Taxes crowd looks like the same bunch who told the public that I-695 would shut down the ferries, senior centers, parks, hospitals, police and fire departments, etc, etc. The public didn't fall for their nonsense then and they aren't going to fall for it in November. Hey, Olympia!! Can you hear us now??

Great job to the organizers of this campaign! I still can't believe how many signatures were collected. Way to go, folks!!!

34. I knew this was going to be good on Saturday when I was working the small strip malls & gas stations in Bothell/Lynnwood/Mill Creek area... and found that most of the people either had already signed the petition or had them on their desks themselves out for people to sign! One guy at a small barbecue place said someone had just come in a few minutes before me and "we all signed it." But I had no idea it would be THIS good! Do you think we made our point? :) Our work has just begun! I figured yesterday when John announced it that people would think I was nuts driving down I-5 laughing my head off and cheering! :)

35. I'll bet they check to see if these signatures
are valid, or maybe they will just do a manual
recount. Then I will break out the petitions
I took home with me at night.

36. The only bad part about this is now they don't spend the gas tax they collect on roads anyway.
They won't spend a dime now that the world has come to an end. Except down by Olympia the freeways are real nice. Hmmmm...

37. Contrary to JDB's earlier assertion I-912 is not about the far right - its about the collective feeling of powerlessness we have all been feeling since the 2004 election.

Its about the frustration we all feel when our elected representatives (NOT elected "leaders") betray us by claiming their agenda is an "EMERGENCY" that requires limiting our rights.

And finaly its about the utter disgust we feel toward the public transit pushers who continually dream up new ways to dip into our wallets to pay for hare-brained non-solutions to the transportation mess they have created in the Puget Sound area.

I congratulate all of those who worked so hard to get and turn in signatures to get I-912 on the ballot this November.

Now the work really begins, as you can be sure the opposition will re-double its efforts to kill this. The vested interests behind the tax have a lot of money so we can expect a barrage of slick lies (remember the "French" monorail ads).

41. Congratualtions to all of those "paid" signature gatherers. Not paid? Sorry, must have gotten some wrong information..... I'm sure they didn't mislead me on purpose....

This initiative will win in November. But, if the bonding proceeds and the funds are bonded before the election, will it be moot?

The intiative group needs to appeal Judge Wickham's ruling for this and the first amendment issue.

I looked at Judge Wickham's website and his background seems to lean heavily (almost exclusively) in the realm of family court and domestic violence. How is it he was the judge to decide on transportation, initiatives or freedom of speech? http://www.chriswickham2004.com/career.htm

Just curious how the system works some times.

"Wickham said he wouldn't second-guess the Legislature's decision to pass a bill that allows the state to sell highway bonds, backed by the new taxes."

However, it seems that Judge Wickham has missed something in the Constitution:

ARTICLE II
LEGISLATIVE DEPARTMENT

SECTION 1 LEGISLATIVE POWERS, WHERE VESTED.
The legislative authority of the state of Washington shall be vested in the legislature, consisting of a senate and house of representatives, which shall be called the legislature of the state of Washington, but the people reserve to themselves the power to propose bills, laws, and to enact or reject the same at the polls, independent of the legislature, and also reserve power, at their own option, to approve or reject at the polls any act, item, Section, or part of any bill, act, or law passed by the legislature. (a) Initiative: The first power reserved by the people is the initiative.

Pity he didn't give the PEOPLE as much deference as he did the legislature.

Posted by: SouthernRoots on July 9, 2005 11:24 AM
42. Power to the people ! In your face, Gov. Luda-Chris and the rest of the legislators that tried to ramrod this thing through without a coherent plan.

To the Judge Wickham's of this world - you wouldn't know how to apply the Constitution if your career depended on it and it probably will, thank God !

Posted by: KS on July 9, 2005 11:27 AM
43. No one was paid to collect signatures.

Now that the initiative has qualified, the state would have to include that fact in any bond agreement, making it essentially a junk bond. The state would be in some serious deep water if they were unable to raise the necessary $5 billion + portion of the bill that the initiative removes to pay back.

44. "Except down by Olympia the freeways are real nice. Hmmmm.."

The freeways in Olympia suck! Whoever designed the exit 105/104 interchange should be sued for incompentence. The mess in Olympia is further proof that we need to implode DOT & the elite rulers in Olympia and start over rather than chuck more money down a rat hole.

Realtors, email Jim Harris: jim@jimpharris.com & tell him that you do not support the excessive gas tax increase & are for real transportation & Olympia reform so we can get even more done under existing revenue streams.

Mariners fans, call or write the Mariners & tell them not to support the excessive gas tax either. The Mariners owe it to us fans to stay neutral on this issue.

45. Hello.

I was reading all the articles about this initiative passing and got to thinking about the people who are opposed to this. And as I was thinking of this, I had a stray thought drift into my nugget:

I wonder how these people would have reacted had they lived in the 1700's and heard about a group of men who dressed up as Indians and dumped a bunch of tea into Boston harbor as a protest against the tax. Would they have bemoaned that that tax was going to be 'for the kids?' Would they declare the end of humanity with all the lost jobs caused by this action? Would they explain that 'it was ONLY a few pence, it was a barely noticeable increase for so much good?'

It seems to me that some people have forgotten our past, and now have become the VERY things we used to rally against. It will be interesting to see how this drama play out. The only thing I am worried about is that when we win this, the politicians in Olympia, mad that we DARED to question them and show them who they really work for, will try to punish us in their usual passive-aggressive ways. You know it will happen, I am just wondering how.

Domo.

Oh, oh we're right, yeah!

We had big money, big media, big business, big labor, big law, big government against us, only 32 days to collect signatures, and all the experts, including some supposedly on our side, and some with a lot of initiative experience saying we couldn't do it. All 912 had was the people, and it was all we needed. God bless you all and on to a BIG win in November.

55. Has anyone else noticed the news media playing up every traffic jam this week? According to the media - every problem that drivers are having this week - getting around in Western Washington, is directly tied to the success of the No New Gas Tax initiative! Hah! They claim that the tax money was going to be for the viaduct, the 520 bridge, etc...

They certainly have many DOT employees out parading in front of the news cameras making solemn statements about how bad it's going to be if they don't get that tax money! Tonight, one DOT worker made the "it's going to put lives at risk" statement! I expect the old stand by - "It's for the children" statement to be aired before the election...
Looks like our tax money is going toward the salaries of DOT employees who simply make themselves available for the news!

I thought it was choice last Friday - driving past Olympia - with DOT road work signs but no road work! Yet, the traffic slowed to a snails pace at Olympia - for absolutely no reason - and continued this pace all the way to Fife! (For no reason.) But the DOT had a traffic warning sign saying to expect stop and go traffic from Olympia to Fife... (I have this picture of a fleet of moonbats in my mind - driving up and down the freeway at 30 MPH - just to slow traffic to make the citizens believe that their gas tax dollars are needed to speed up the flow!)

I remember driving to Tacoma over 10 years ago on I 5 and feeling the car start to vibrate as though I had a flat tire. I remember years later, talk in Olympia about fixing our roads and the money they needed and took from us to do it! I thought finally that stretch of freeway would be fixed! As I drove to and from Tacoma last week, the first thing I noticed was that familar vibration and feeling as though I had a flat! They have never fixed that roadway - yet they took money for it!

That is what they do folks! They make false claims of purpose for our tax dollars and yet they never use it for it's purpose! And - we don't know where all of our money has gone over the years! As with our corrupt elections in this state - there is simply no accountability! And we cannot trust our State and Local Government with our hard earned money any longer.

>>But the DOT had a traffic warning sign saying to expect stop and go traffic from Olympia to Fife...

LOL we ALWAYS expect stop and go traffic... mostly stop... *everywhere* we go around here! And now since we so selfishly forced them to put the gas tax on the ballot, they won't be able to afford more stop lights to put on the freeway on ramps (which seems to be their solution to our traffic mess... see if they can pile us up more!).

Or they merge on-ramps from TWO major roads into one big pile-up at the bottom. I.e. Bothell Everett Highway and 522 trying to get onto 405 in the mornings! I end up driving the back roads to Bothell and getting on 405 there because at Canyon Park traffic is backed up all the way back along the B/E Highway. I guess they need a couple more stop lights. :)

57. Ref. mass transit... a lot of us are FOR good mass transit. I am amazed that a metro area this size has no decent mass transportation system! I had to pay $100 round trip approx. on the shuttle to get to the airport... because even to get there on a BUS meant 4 hours and 3 transfers... and I live walking distance to a main highway...not talking back roads here! I live in Bothell and work in Redmond... ever checked out the bus routes there? One woman worked for a month at my company who lived in Lynnwood and had to take a bus... she spent 3-1/2 hours EACH WAY on the bus and then had to walk the last mile to get to work. We NEED decent mass transportation... and I am not referring to something that goes from downtown Seattle to Safeco field sheesh!

58. My post above at 11:34 p.m: I meant Thank "YOU" Kirby.

Deborah,
I noticed that myself even over here on the east side of the state. The only west side station we get here is NWCN. I saw the DOT spokesman whining about maintenance on the "oh so dangerous" bridge. And if we are going to fix it, it takes 13 years to build a new one and we better get started now. I saw the angry users of the bridge bellyaching about maintenance being done on a weekend for goodness sake. I mean you expect this to be done during the week so you can have your weekend to do whatever you want.
Cry me river folks, I'm not buyin' it.
I'm taking the advice of Rich @ 10:23 p.m. and saving my gas receipts.

The last I heard JDB is hollowing out an old cedar log for a canoe so he can by-pass the Alaskan Way Viaduct he claims is going to fall down tomorrow via paddling. Actually, that would be kind of politically correct and consistent with the Seattle LEFTIST PINHEAD "Progressive" policies. Their idea of "Progressive" is often paddling back to the past.

61. Hey, KB! I am sure you are right about more people wanting to sign. I, too, live in Ferndale - had many people asking me to bring it around for them to sign, but had a hard time coordinating schedules...still, got quite a few signatures. Anyway, 420,000 is awesome, especially when you consider those folks who wanted to sign but didn't make it! Do you suppose anyone down in Olympia will start to feel the ground moving?

How about Eyman's new initiative? Did performance audits make it on to the ballot?

62. Peggy, I think Eyman's Initiative 900 has turned in more the 313,000 signatures according the July 8 Seattle Times article.

63. Eyman is done now that I-912 has qualified, and he better be trembling about the future of his initiative business.

64. And why would that be, Harry?

65. Yes, Harry, I would like to know as well?

66. I suspect there is no longer dancing in the isles of Olympia, or the Wickham's courthouse.

No amount of money or advertising put up by the special interests will save this transportation package.

To many of the initiative designers, gatherers and signers, this is way deeper than a drive to kill the transportation boondoggle.

It is a "Wake up and smell the roses" message from the voters to the so called representatives in Olympia.

Representative? Ignoring voter approved I601

Representative? Ignoring voter approved $30 car tabs.

Representative? An absolutely rediculous over use of the Emergency clause to eliminate even the people's right to referendum.

The nonewgastax vote was not a partisan issue. Citizens in this state from all parties rallied around this historic effort to send a firm message to the current Tax and Dance team in Olympia.

This should be their last dance!

67. Read in the PI on the Guzzler & KC Council members... They bring up Irons and his Station Wagon... I live down the and he doesn't own an SUV or a Station Wagon... PI trying to taint his image so King Sims can rule the county for years to come. Yikes... Soft little lies to get people to have a negative opinion.... dirty for a major paper...

69. PI? Who reads it anyway?

When its enlightened editorial board drives their Yugo's to live in a Tent City for a week to connect with their reader base, I'll listen;

Till then, it's another item vying for space next to the "aliens land with Elvis" paper in the supermarket; hardly the thing used for serious research footnotes;

70. This initiative wasn't about a gas tax. It wasn't about Democratsor Republicans, left or right. It was about the growing arrogance of an out of control government that thinks it can ingore the will of the people. That arrogance can be traced back to the Mariner's stadium where Mike Lowery decided to "save" babseball in Washington and go ahead with Safeco Field even though the people voted against it. That they threw out I-601 and blocked any referndum on the gas tax is just the latest example of their arrogance.

I fully expect next session to see them outlay the intiative process.

71. for those who actually follow politics, yeah, it might have been about the arrogance.

for the vast majority of the people who signed the inititative it's about the tax
