Restoring public trust in King County elections - Not

Ron Sims' Indpendent Task Force on Elections released its recommendations Wednesday afternoon. I'm curious to read the full report, which should be available mid-day Thursday. But based on the group's Cover Letter to Ron Sims , news reports and an op-ed in Thursday's Times, the task force fell somewhat short of its stated goal to "restore public trust and confidence in King County's elections system".

Two recommendations made sense -- (a) bring in an outside turnaround team to take over the elections department, and (b) in the future, put the department under a separately elected auditor. Unfortunately, most of the other recommendations were irrelevant to the core issues that undermined confidence in the first place, namely inadequate standards, controls and transparency to ensure a fair election and an accurate and trusted outcome. Some of the recommendations, such as a move to all-mail voting, were simply irresponsible and if implemented, would only further undermine integrity and erode public confidence.

Ron Sims and Dean Logan both responded with public statements of their own Sims here, Logan here. Neither one seems to grasp that the recommendations for a turnaround team and an elected auditor are a message to Sims and Logan to get out of the elections business. Confidence in King County Elections will only start to return if and when Sims and Logan get lost.

1. Do you reckon Logan actually wrote his release?

2. This would be our annual/biannual acknowledgement by Sims that the system is broken. This is generally always followed by a promise to fix something else.

4. Logan is not only incompetent...he is naive & stoopid too.

Dean--Do you know what a scapegoat is??
Your career is toast.
Sims will cut you off at the knees and set you adrift soon. So much for loyalty. However, the LEFTIST PINHEADS will find you a new position as Election Director in France.

5. What a joke. Restore felons voting. Gee, who is that going to benefit? All mail voting? There you go, the totally wrong direction. Why don't we just give Ron Sims a million blank ballots and let him fill them out any way he wants?

And good old Ron Sims, the gutless weenie whose leadership in this matter has resulted in his decision to let Logan decide on his own future, has got to be so happy with his hand-picked commission. How many more Democrat votes will these changes squeeze out of those felons and the additional fraud made possible by an all mail election?

The foxes are guarding the henhouse, and Republicans just handed Sims another 4 years by failing to put up a real challenger.

There's 2 filing days left for November. Isn't there a champion of conservative issues and concern for the people above special interests that is out there to knock Sims off of his thrown? Is the non-Seattle majority in King County going to just wait until November to realize that they blew an opportunity to take King County back from this corrupt cabal?

6. Good comment, Mike. What about all those hot shots that are fighting back and forth for County Council? Why doesn't someone like Reagan Dunn jump on the Executive bandwagon and let negative Sims press send him into the Exec position? Or Irons, for that matter.

Snohomish County just elected a young kid with a lot of charisma as County Exec. Why can't King County?

7. I just read Sims statement and adding 14 posiitons to the payroll? Didn't say what positions and what they would be doing. Guess he is hiring more people in case he needs another scapegoat.

8. The board appointed by his Majesty Ron Sims misses a huge major problem

We anchored all our deliberations on the powerful ideal that
every vote does indeed count.

We counted every "vote" last time. Every felon, dead person, multiple vote counted.

We need to count every Legal Vote.

9. Folks you all raise good ?s as a I'm concerned.I wish someone had the guts & power to chase King Sims out of his job!! Enough is enough!!Then do the same to Dean the Clueless Logan!!

10. This little nugget of love was from the PI breakdown of recomendations:

"Conduct only one manual recount when a recount is necessary"

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure 99% of the folks doing the manual recount were honest and upstanding folks, but they still make more mistakes than a machine. Then there is that other 1%...

11. How many times can Logan refer to the upcoming election in his release? It seems that his response was a lame attempt to steer our attention away from the last election as "we move forward".

And while there seems to be no shortage of incompetence in that department, I think they have overplayed that card as a defense mechanism. This election was boldly and unapologetically stolen.

The only real incompetence they displayed was that they had to "find" votes close to a dozen times to put them over the top. And even then, they weren't sure. On their third and final opportunity, they waited to be last to send in their numbers. And still had to falsify their reports.

Logan is holding the mother of all political IOU's right now. And as long as King Ron keeps his throne, he is safe. At best, he will keep his job. At worst, he will "resign" and be given an obscure, highly-compensated consulting gig after the standard cooling off period.

12. A complete whitewash. Why am I not surprised.

Can you imagine; their solution to the illegal felon vote is to make felons legal voters. I suppose their solution to illegal non-citizen voting would be to make non-citizens legal voters. I suppose their solution of illegal multiple voters would be to allow anyone to vote as many times as they could.

But "they cannot cheat if it is not close".

13. Saw a Bank of America commercial. Ron should hang his head.

Commercial says - 40 million checks processed per day. 1 error in a million is unacceptable. That would have been 3.6 errors in our last election (state wide).

Ron - the bank just defined what would make them proud - you lose.

14. Grabbit grasps it . . . completely. Political IOUs are the genesis of corruption.

15. I agree with the "Turn Around Team" concept....but lets make it a county wide thing....lets get a team to do a County Turnaround....and why not led by, say, Dave Irons?

16. The arguments for restoring FELON'S VOTING RIGHTS....can equally be used to argue that FELON'S state and federal second ammendment rights to own firearms should also be automatically restored.

Almost no liberal would argue that a felon should be automatically allowed to posess firearms after release. They don't mind depriving ex-felons of certain constitutionally protected rights. However, denying an ex-felon of their voting rights, is just not acceptable to most democratic party hacks and liberal.

It is clear to me that ex-felons are not full citizens and if they are not entitled to the full rights of citizenship, then not being able to vote is just fine with me. We have an "instant check" firearms purchasing systems so figuring out way to keep track of voting should not be too hard.

17. Personally, if there is a recommendation to move to complete mail-in balloting, that someone in the legal arena would slap them with a class-action lawsuit. We should demand that King County be prevented from holding an election by injuntion until they can demonstrate that they are fully compliant with HAVA as well as all existing and new state regulations AND that they can ACCURATELY ACCOUNT and CERTIFY each legitimate vote cast.

Why does that sound familiar?

19. Felons voting is illegal currently, and there was a huge problem with it in the last election. The solution? Make it legal. Drug usage is a big problem, so lets make that legal too! In fact, let's take the same approach to all crimes! Car theft is illegal, and yet a large problem, let's make it legal that way it won't be a problem right?
Liberal solutions to solving problems is to ignore them or make them legal - that way there is no problem right?

Posted by: JustSumGuy on July 28, 2005 09:53 AM
20. Yeah, all mail balloting doesn't do anything to restore my confidence in KC Elections. Considering that the Task Force listed that as one of their main objectives with this report, they seem to have failed.

I think it's interesting that while they interviewed the elected official, KC Elections employees, and representatives of business, labor, education, civic organizations, and the media...they didn't bother to talk to real people - a critical flaw that makes this report worthless.

21. JustSumGuy >> my thoughts exactly as a logical extension to Robert W's previous post >> to carry things on and to give it even more perspective -- the Clinton admin totally ignored and pandered to all the external sworn enemies of the US -- resulting in 9-11 and China military buildup -- their answers to problems were incinerating American civilians, turning down delivery of Osama when it was offered more than once on a silver platter, forcibly removing a legitimate legally arrived refugee back to their bolshevic buddy C-ass-tro and bombing the Serbs who were trying to continue holding the long held line against Islam's invasion of Europe -- the BBC and the CBC can't bear to use the word 'terrorism' when it is right in their damn faces and up their arses at the same time -- and now the buffoons in the white house are following suit - just ignore it - call it by some other name -- soften it up with the bolshevic term 'struggle' -- It's getting really bad boys and girls -- and what are the parties coming up with -- the Hildabeast and the manchurian candidate -- both phonier than 3 dollah bills.

22. "We anchored all our deliberations on the powerful ideal that

...Except military and Republican votes, which had they been counted would have kicked the Dems' asses off this planet the last election.

23. Darth -- good observation -- the inbred syndicate has spoken -- banana republic for sure - shades of Aruba - if it was not for the Twittys and Holloways - and Fox news maintaining pressure - the original "usual suspects" - the two black guys that were first fingered by the 'connected' and held for about two weeks - would have been tried and convicted by now and put away for life. The real perp's would be back on the prowl - trolling for tourists with a new supply of ecstasy bought with daddies money.

24. ERNurse,

Right on point. Powerful ideal indeed - especially when "liberally" applied.

25. Why should felons voting rights automatically be restored? Isn’t a felon one who has committed or been legally convicted of a crime? So why on earth should they automatically be allowed to vote for rules that they won’t bother to abide by?

All I’m hearing is double talk, nonsense and gibberish, hogwash from the claptraps of two KC officials who could care less about “cleaning up” the mess they created. On the other hand, they may want felons voting rights automatically restored because they are crooks themselves.

26. Restore voting trust? When I see actual reform, I'll try. "Believing" is ok for faith and religion. However, we are dealing with the human factor here. Election officials' actions & histories tell me otherwise.

No felon votes. Why do I want a child molester or car thief to affect my taxes and my property rights? They have already demonstrated their contempt for society. Why illegal aliens are even IN the discussion is a travesty. Be careful, America--illegals are getting 'creeping' rights--first, an education here, then a free medical ER visit there, school lunches--ENOUGH is ENOUGH! Who the #$^&**# are they anyway?

Clean house at the next voting opportunity--now or never--time for jerking around with academic theories is over. Too much at stake--terrorism, land rights, taxes and our lifestyles. Don't give these baboons power over the entire jungle.
