Yet another dumb e-mail from an elected official

We're on a roll with a whole spate of Dumb E-mails from Elected Officials this week.

Reader Pat C. sends us this dumb e-mail from Rep. Geoff Simpson (D-Covington)
You showed your stripes as an unthinking, knee-jerk, anti-government, selfish whacko last night. And now you have really cemented your position as a jerk by claiming I prostitute my children. FYI - my kids wrote their own testimony and unlike you, they actually care about their community and other people besides themselves. They understand that it costs money to provide services and amenities. Even at their young age, they're smart enough to know that sidewalks and road improvement and maintenance, police, schools and teachers, libraries, fire service, planning and code enforcement, parks and recreation, environmental protection, water and sewer services, and general government cannot be had for free. Too bad you and your mentors Julie Holbrook and Tim Eyman live in a fantasy land where those things come without any responsibility on your part.. You've also earned a spot in my Outlook rules that automatically delete messages from people who have nothing intelligent to say. See ya around.
Pat's description of the context and original e-mail to Simpson are posted in the extended entry. I'll grant that Pat's characterization of Simpson's use of his kids as "prostitution" was uncalled for, especially when "exploited your kids for a cheap political stunt" would have sufficed. But we also look to our elected officials to set an example and inspire us to raise the quality of discussion, and not lower it as Simpson has done.

I'll give Simpson the benefit of doubt that his children have a deep understanding of "planning and code enforcement" if he also tells me they are equally concerned about "campaign finance violations".

I saved this for such a moment!! This morsel is from my state rep after a Covington town hall meeting which a utilities tax was publicly discussed and an open mic session. Geoff graced us with his presence as he was once a member of that city council. (There is a bounty of stories about his behavior in that capacity)

His wife and kids spoke to the council about how this tax is fair and though they don't like it, can cut back on little things like espresso's and dvd rentals or some such drivel. The kids were well scripted and coached. It was sickening as I liked it to child prostitution (rather ironic thought as we the people were about to get screwed) and told Simpson what I thought of it, as you see by my letter. After his family spoke, he came up to the mic and layed kudos to the council on holding the line on taxes by not raising amounts that they could.

At the meeting, I spoke and said if I owned an espresso stand, I'd be pretty upset as the council is asking my customers to not patronize me to pay for the tax, and perhaps before they come up with the grand plans they have, they ought to live within their means. It was as if they wanted to buy Bill Gates' house but had a budget that afforded mine. This gave Geoff a face to put with previous email exchanges we had about his antics in Olympia. Prior to this letter going to him were a few e-mail exchanges about him thinking of himself as a moderate. Quit laughing Shark!

Now, maybe I deserved a bit of the name calling as I called him "Less than Honorable" in previous salutations. But I think his true colors came out here. Enjoy!

Pat C's e-mail to Simpson:

You stated in an earlier email to me you're a moderate. Laughable at best, but at least your position is now noted. And your whole family behind you. But shame on you for using your kids to forge on with it. It mounts to little more than child prostitution though. They haven't been educated on tax matters, made so obvious by the way they read their statements, and I'm sure you spoon fed them the "we can cut back" logic your wife spoke of. And you capping off the Simpson show by patting the council on the back about what a good job they're doing at holding the line on taxes. How about the stellar job they're doing at hiding the truth about how long that tax is going to stick around.

1. When I was a kid, I was smart enough to know it cost money to pay for roads and schools and big red fire trucks. I was also smart enough to know that roads sucked, and throwing another 9 cents per gallon at it wouldn't automatically do anything. I knew that schools sucked and making kids pass a test wouldn't automatically make them smarter. I was smart enough to know that there is more to good government than answering every questions with more money and higher taxes. And I wasn't even prostituted.

2. He actually had his children speak in front of a council???? How low can you go.

Leave the kids outta politics, they are already exposed to enough "Evil" in this world already.

Maybe his children should have written the email, I am sure they are more polite.

Posted by: Chris on August 2, 2005 10:29 AM
3. Oh. That explains the kids. Turns out Rep. Simpson drifted among three area community colleges and never even recieved his A.A. So actually his kids are probably smarter than he is.

4. ouhhh.... that looks like patriarchal anger to me! Simpson should know better than that. Hasn't he learned anything from Murray and Cantwell about patriarchal oppression and control?

5. Wow--build a better dumb politican e-mail mouse trap and they will come!! What I fear with these dumb e-mails is the 'roach factor'--we see a few, but know there are colonies of them! Lord help us. Time in November for incum-BENTS to become incumb-WENTS.

6. Gee, imagine my surprise. Another politician who just doesn't get it. I'll leave the discussion about using kids in speeches to others, but I do not want anyone telling me what I need to give up to pay another "fair" tax.
Some of us have alrady given up the DVDs. After my last pay raise, I had just enough left over to enjoy an expresso or two, and now I am supposed to give up those. Clearly my MBA is insufficient to manage money well enough to afford you.
So what's next? Do I not buy a new pair of shoes? Or a new shirt? Or tell my grandkids they have to do without? Where does it stop? Do I not buy the new car and go with an old one? Do I have to sell my house and get a smaller one now? Just to pay another fair tax?
We are dying the death of a thousand cuts out here and the masters in Olympia just don't get it. Or maybe they just don't care. Instead of open audits and sound budgeting, we are told what to give up. Instead of reasoned and adult discussion, we get this kind of communication.
No thank you. I'm just going to close my spread sheets, and go down and buy a latte...a grande...and think of ways to vote insufferable jerks like this out of office.

7. An average mainstream Democrat's description of a Republican:

"unthinking, knee-jerk, anti-government, selfish whacko"

And Democrats criticize George W. for being a divider, not a uniter. Aye Carumba! The party of hate continues to crank out its vicious attacks on its political opposition.

The general Republican preference is for a much more limited amount of government than the general Democrat preference. This doesn't mean that Republicans are anti-government. It certainly doesn't mean Republicans are unthinking, knee-jerk, or whacko. I think Rep. Simpson owes someone an apology.

8. Incredible. Liberal politicians in that part of the country are without a doubt the most immature, unthinking, shallow gaggle of slugs I've ever discovered.

Posted by: Rplat on August 2, 2005 01:02 PM
9. "You've also earned a spot in my Outlook rules that automatically delete messages from people who have nothing intelligent to say. See ya around."

That says a lot about your position, when the only way you can win an argument is by refusing to acknowledge the other side.

He taught his kids taxes are the life blood of humanity, and I wonder if he also taught his kids to plug their ears and whine "blah blah blah I'm not listening blah blah blah I'm not listening" whenever somebody decides a 37 cent gas tax is too much.

Posted by: ARS on August 2, 2005 01:52 PM
10. That is really funny ARS!

Posted by: cc on August 2, 2005 02:22 PM
11. Geoff Simpson sounds like hes in his own fantacy land where taxes rule. i think he needs to find a better day job and stop sending his kids to stupid tax meetings were they aren't being brain washed by daddy.Kids need to have a life not ruled by taxes and more taxes.

Posted by: Laurie on August 2, 2005 02:27 PM
12. Also don't know too many Adults who like it either!! As for how he spends time with his kids he can find a better way to do so.

Posted by: Laurie on August 2, 2005 02:30 PM
13. I have seen LEFTIST PINHEADS shamelessly use children time & time again....speaking against Chain Stores for example. It's pathetic. I have even seen these LEFTIST PINHEADS get 5 and 6 year-old kids to sign PETITIONS!
The end justifies ANY means. You cannot reason with a LEFTIST PINHEAD. The only time they listen is when you see fear in their eyes....because they are truly pansy-asses.

Posted by: Mr. Cynical on August 2, 2005 03:02 PM
14. Yup, that was me who sent that in and perhaps some would say that prostituting kids was a bit over the top for an expression. So is using the phrase "starving our children" when talking school lunch funding. However, I do believe that using kids to extort funds from wage earners is sickening. I have another email from him that has him bragging about how handily he won because he's a "moderate" and how we (conservatives) ought to watch and learn from his political positions. I'm saving that for another day.

Posted by: PC on August 2, 2005 03:44 PM
15. What really makes me laugh is how thin-skinned these liberal politicians are. They can surely deal out insults but they do rather poorly when invective comes their way.

Posted by: Larry on August 2, 2005 03:56 PM
16. Geoff also fails to include the little tidbit that we voted against his tax for Covington AFTER we found out that the council rushed the tax through during the Christmas break (!!) and didn't bother to tell anybody (along with RAISES for the city council.)

THAT is what got the rest of us fired up. We are tired of being taxed WITHOUT REPRESENTATION and then being told that we are ignorant. And to top off his insult, he says he will put us on "ignore?"

And they wonder why we are angry????

FEH on the whole bunch. (disclaimer:I voted against him and never cared for him as a neighbor. He is way to impressed with himself!!)

17. Did I read this right "you and your mentors Julie Holbrook and Tim Eyman live in a fantasy land where those things come without any responsibility on your part.. "

A Washington Liberal Democrat talking about "personal responsability"?
After all, does that not go counter to every other position he likely holds. You know, AIDS patients are not responsble. The Homeless are not responsable. Drug addicts are not responsable.
Criminals are not responable. Etc,etc,etc,etc..

I mean the "only one", who has to be responsable is the "Taxpayer". He or She has to give and continue to give, as much money as Liberal Government has deemed necessary. All to help these other "down trodden" people.

He needs a reality check. Maybe the people of Covington will give it to him. Then maybe he will get his head out of his posterior.
Mike

18. I can guarantee you the legislator who previously occupied this seat - Suzette Cooke - would never send such an e-mail. Ever. Especially to a constituent. But no one should be surprised by this. He does the same thing to GOP legislators ... including his own senator.

The 47th used to be represented by true moderates - Elmira Forner and Cooke - not some union goon who should be knocked down a peg during a personal conversation out back of city hall.

The last time the Ds acted with this much arrogance was the '93 and '94 sessions. A repeat of the '94 elections is in order.

19. At most retail stores, the customer service person is warned under pain of job loss to smile and respond nicely to virtually every arrogant or angry customer. They eat yards of humble pie while gritting their teeth so as not to strangle the idiot customer.

Yet here--a public employee--who chose this job voluntairly--can insult his own employer and keep his job? I've seen people whacked for much less. Shame. No class. No humility as a public employee serving constitutents. Just another "used car salesman reputation" becoming reality. ...and they wonder why politicians score so poorly on public perception surveys...For some public officials or districts, I guess it's like the "potential spouse dilemma:" "...all the good ones are taken or elsewhere..."

20. Whoa. This dude is not the only slash and burn D in Olytown who does not understand the art of finessing the sheeples.

From Seattle Rant is this gem, from Rep. Judy Clibborn, in response to a comment from a constituent about the gas tax.
********
Gee! That was fun! Thanks for sending it. I have never seen it. Makes my skin crawl.

Judy

21. I would think that blocking emails from a constituent (basically saying don’t talk to me) might be a civil rights violation. Think he understands the first amendment right ‘to petition the government for a redress of grievances’? How about the Washington State Constitution; ‘The right of petition and of the people peaceably to assemble for the common good shall never be abridged.

22. Oh dear, it seems there is becoming a fast-moving epidemic of "Legislator-Dumb-Letter-itis"! Three in as many days--ouch!

23. Michele, three in as many days is right. Now how many dems are in Olympia???? Should be no problem to come up with more entertainment.

24. Received an email from Steve Hammond - King County Council today to update his address book. Seems he is spamming everyone that has written him regarding issues.

Please give us a break! Becareful of the politicians you send email to, your spam filter may not be strong enough to hold back the flood.

25. What's with these liberal Democrats in Olympia lately? They're acting just a tad bit hostile!

Why are they so sensitive right now? Almost childish! No - beyond childish!

Something is going on that is putting them on the defense big time! Or they are so full of themselves now - and have completely adopted the leftist mock-elitist attitude toward the rest of the state...that they feel justified in their rude and juvenile behavior? .....

I'm thinking they are in trouble...and they're going wobbly!

26. I wonder if Geoff"s seat is up for grabs in 2006?!(JUst a thought)

Posted by: Laurie on August 3, 2005 07:23 AM
27. Yes Laurie it is. He already thinks of himself as "re-elected"

Posted by: PC on August 3, 2005 10:12 AM
28. Hey, PC?

Why don't ya confront Geoff one-on-one and tell him again how he's engaging his kids in, let's see how did you put it? Ah, yes, "child prostitution" and when your testicles decend from your abdomen, post the date/time here. I'll be there to watch. Oh, I'll also be the one taking bets over $500 at 10:1 odds. My money is on Geoff.

Ding! Ding! There's the bell tough guy.

29. Dem in Covington - If he wasn't such a two-faced, hypocritical cowardly POS (AKA DEMOCRAT), none of us would need to.

I have a feeling that "Mr. Testicle" is going to get his bell rung, and I hope that I am there to see it...

Ding! Ding! there's the "Dem in Covington" dumb guy!

30. The clear message from all these knuckleheads is "If you are not a sheeple, don't be writing me E-mail, don't be looking over my shoulder, and for sure, don't share my lack of class".

Poor idiots, wonder what they will do for gainful employment after the election. Mayhaps replace Dean Logan?

31. Hmm,dialogue about saying something to his face huh? If you know him like you say, you recall him physically threatening a certain female with an "a$$kicking". I have kids that can put the whoop on him.

Posted by: PC on August 3, 2005 09:03 PM
32. Dem in Cov...Allow me to re-phrase that statement about your recollection as I don't want to be one to start rumors, but maybe put one to rest. Do you recall that happening at the onset of his public official career? This shouldn't be the start of the "when did you quit beating your wife?" exchange. That's tacky.

Posted by: PC on August 3, 2005 09:32 PM
33. It's OK PC - I think "Dem in Covington" is Geoff Simpson!

Just another cowardly move by a mouth-breathing liberal. All show and no go...
