"Up in the air, junior birdsman"

Ron Sims approaches his job with his head in the clouds and is reluctant to return to planet earth. Both figuratively and literally:

From his temporary, 32nd-floor offices in the Bank of America Tower, King County Executive Ron Sims enjoys an airline passenger's view: Mount Rainier, the Olympics, the sports stadiums, and ferries crisscrossing Puget Sound.
Sims wants his new office to occupy the top two floors of a to-be-constructed 13-story county office tower. Members of the County Council want him to rejoin the council and the regular folk in the courthouse or the admin building. The view-loving Sims and chief-of-staff Kurt Triplett are defending their sky-high-turf.

Sims says he can't move in to the admin building without displacing one of the departments. But members of the council say that moving the elections office out of the admin building was one of the goals of the new office tower all along anyway.

Triplett, Sims' chief of staff, said, however, that consolidating the elections functions "was never discussed as part of the new county office building. It is a very real option that could be looked at ... but it wasn't what was originally talked about."
A long-time observer of county government e-mails that
Triplett is lying. Elections has been slated to be in the new building since first discussed years ago.
adding that
one of the features they were really excited about was that they were putting customer service on the first floor with sidewalk access and a tunnel across from the new garage. A handful of 30 min. public parking spaces that they were going to put on the first floor of the garage for people wishing to buy marriage, business, and vehicle licenses; register to vote; and pay property taxes or access property records.

I thought facilities had some great ideas about putting the departments that interacted with the public the most on floors that were very accessible, and I loved that some short term parking was going to be available for the public.

But what's customer convenience when you're talking about the boss' view?

Of course, if David Irons is elected County Executive, Sims will be liberated to take a job as many feet off the ground as his heart desires.

1. Oh Lord!

Get that man out of office before he comes up with more expensive fantasies!!

Ron Sims reminds me of a spoiled child in Toys R us! And we - the people - are his parents! He wants everything he sees - everything he dreams of and has no sense of the cost or the impact of his purchases! The parents have tried talking to him - reasoning with him about expenses and his lack of wisdom in toy choices...(Trains, etc..)..but little Ronny just has to have everything! It's just too cool! The parents have threatened to withold Ronny's allowance but he steals money from his parents anyway! In fact, little Ronny conspired with his little friends and took some stray animals and hid them at various places in the community. Every few months, Ronny and his friends would move the strays to a new location instead of getting them medical help and good homes! He stole more money from his parents in his effort to hide and play with these strays....

It's time for little Ronny to get a spanking! He is a sick boy!

We need David Irons!

2. Very fitting theme and lead paragraph, after I've just come from watching NASA TV online and space shuttle doings. I can report here at about half past 2:00 am that, ironically, even though Sims has his head in the clouds and doesn't want to come down, the shuttle Discovery crew would sure like to come down, and can't, because of the clouds! (we'll try again tomorrow, guys)

3. I can't figure out if he's insane or very very stupid.

Posted by: Bostonian on August 8, 2005 05:01 AM
4. Remember the sitcom "The Jefferson's"???
Ron Sims is the George Jefferson (certainly not Thomas Jefferson) of KingCo.
His theme song is "Movin' on Up"!!!

5. Hey, why don't we just put a padlock on his door and leave him up there? He could be that "crazy uncle Ron who lives up in the attic."

Posted by: ERNurse on August 8, 2005 06:14 AM
6. Maybe Ron Sims should move his office to Boeing Field?

Posted by: Richard Pope on August 8, 2005 07:45 AM
7. Two floors??? What? He wants 24' glass walls in his corner office? What is his office staff count up to last time I checked he had increase the executives office stafe by a little over 2x (38 to 80+) while complaining that I695 was forcing him to cut the Sheriffs office.

A more fitting office would be the maintenance closet on level SB3 next to the fan room.

8. This is the same man, whom the KC Council has to ASK if he would request Assistant from the SOS office for the upcoming primary election.

The rest of the state has to ultimately PAY for KC elections screwups. Since request for assistance was made, and if granted, it now is NOT just a KC problem. Does this give the Average WA Citizen the right to Bitch at Simms? It is our tax money being spent on a job that Simms & Co. should be able to do on their own, but admits it they can't.

For Pete's Sakes ! Give him an office with alot of windows but on ground floor, with bars.

9. It may be stupidty, it may be insanity butit is definitely proof that he has been emboldened by the lack of criminal prosecution after this past election.
Run him out of town and save the rest of state from living through another hijacking.

10. Ron Simms is a loose cannon with a great fantasy life. KC council needs to hold their ground on this one and require his return to the fold. Not only does it make sense that KC government be as consolidated as possible, but Simms needs the reminder that he is a Public Servant, not the Prince of King County (to Christine's Queen of Washington). He needs to see and be involved in daily operations and oversight: 1) in the interest of efficiancy, and 2) as a reminder of what his job position actually is. Because being away from the main KC workings allows him to become even more grandiose, and pie in the sky.

So, I agree with Larry Phillips (feels strange). When Ron is voted out in November, Triplett needs to go also. He sounds as self serving and arrogant as his boss.

PS: What does Officer Ring have on who?? Instead of being prosecuted for what looks to be just cause; all of a sudden the investigation is dropped, he is handed his fill pension, payment of his legal costs, and a clean work record and all it entails. It apprears that somebody can't pay him off fast enough. Wow, he must have good video footage of somebody important recreating in Enumclaw.

11. The higher up the tree and the more unresponsive to the public good a public servant is, the greater the need for emphasizing humility in service.

For that reason, if no other, the offices of the King County Executive and Council should be in the basement, below ground level, windowless, with no flat-panel TV.

Posted by: gaelwolf on August 8, 2005 09:57 AM
12. gaelwolf...totally agree with you on that one.

13. Given that 95% of his job can be accomplished with a computer and a phone, any number of strip mall locations will suffice. Up along the north end of Aurora he should be able to find a little place (between a chiropractor and a nails place) for probably less than $2,500 a month (for around 1,500' ft). Nothing fancy, but why should any government worker get a mansion built by taxpayers' money? Time for government to start being economical. Ronny seems like a good place to start.

14. Ron Sims!! The Gift that keeps on giving!! Gop are you listening? We need to run a strong marketing campaign for David Irons and please use these priceless opportunties!!! These serious problems caused by a devil may care attitude to voters that needs to be emphasized by the Irons folks in abig way as the dems have allready proved they will stop at nothing to keep their faithful in office! This uphill fight is not for sissies!! If Irons wins it needs to by a landslide period!

15. He thinks of himself as royalty. And why not? His ilk gets put into power everytime without consequence given the people who vote for him. If he keeps that dense Seattle crowd happy (you can take dense both ways) he'll be in his ivory tower you bet.

16. What's wrong with an underpass? or a Tent city? Get a wireless pc & phone and off you go! Living by example among your voting constituents would impress the Hades out of me.

17. His head in the clouds? Gee, I always thought it was in another location with a far less sweeping view.

Posted by: Howard Hirsch on August 8, 2005 01:14 PM
18. Sounds a little cocky to me. How about moving
the office to tent city, that way he can be closer to his constituents. He is acting like the
election is in the bag. No, what fraud? The next election has been decided already I am afraid.

19. You looking for fiscal responsibility from someone who puts fine art in a sewage treatment plant?

Hey Ron, it’s only money taken away from our families. Spend, spend and spend, because if we kept it ourselves, we would just use it on something selfish. No wonder these pols think our money is theirs; we let them by electing them over and over again.
Shame on us.

20. Good grief, what an arrogant buffoon! 32nd floor? I suppose thin air and oxygen deprivation explains Ronny's actions!

21. What's the matter with you people? Sims is entitled to the corner office with a view because of all the wonderful management skills he's displayed, especially after this last election that any bank would be proud of.

Obviously, you all didn't have very good home training =P

22. Uh oh ... you're not suggesting that he become a pilot, are you? Imagine what that would be like with his belief that 98% is a good rate of accuracy.

I'd prefer that he become a professional fire jumper, and continue with 98% accuracy as a good standard for his parachute.

23. The 'Junior Birdmen' song in that old Audie Murphy movie was sung to some snooty airmen by Army grunts in a bar, as the preliminary insults inviting a brawl.

Here it might put the party of Ron Sims on notice that their desire for aristocratic accommodations at our expense isn't unopposed.

24. ...so--when his 32nd floor elevator goes 99.98% there, will he slide his svelt keester through the door each day with his coffee and biscotti? oohhh--that would be a digital camera photo-op for some SP "hidden camera collaborator!!" ahhh Ron---enjoy--your career sunset awaits...

25. Does the KC Council hold contracts in their domain? It would be awesome to see an eviction procedure issued against the haughty King Ron!
