"He who hesitates is lost"

A public service announcement --

Remember, all absentee ballots have to be postmarked by election day. Not placed in a mailbox, but postmarked. I found that last November, hundreds of ballots were postmarked the day after the election and were (correctly) rejected.

I infer this happened because the voters assumed that a ballot placed in a mailbox on election day was timely enough not realizing that the mail might not be postmarked until the next day, causing their vote to be wasted.

If you vote by absentee (and don't get me started), and you haven't mailed your ballot yet, do NOT just put it in the mailbox today. Drop it off at the nearest polling place, or bring it to a post office and make sure that it is postmarked on election day.

1. Stefan,

Time to get off your high horse. As Mr "want a perfect election," your real purpose is clear: to get your favorite politicians elected at all costs.

There is no such thing as a perfect election -- yet you showed no desire for aiming for such after Florida 2000 (instead, celebrating a ridiculous supreme court intervention in your otherwise precious state rights).

So..this whole thing about finding individual voters whose votes shouldn't count should be shown for what it is. A thin, vaccuous attempt to get republicans elected by creating the false impression of widespread fraud, deceit, etc. The truth, which you ignore, is all elections are flawed and you just didn't like the outcome of this one.

Get a real job...please.

2. Leslie,

1. I'd rather ride a high horse than a low one. No, we cannot expect "a perfect election", but the low horse you ride gave us the most disgusting example of fraud and incompetence in the history of this state. King County Elections' performance before, during and after the November '04 election is a disgrace that all Washingtonians should be ashamed of.

2. And you don't want YOUR candidate to win? The difference is that Stefan and most who post on this site are willing to accept opposition party candidates elected to office in a fair and honest election, while you prefer the "win at any cost" tactics employed by Democrat King County Elections personnel.

3. The reference to Florida '00 is laughable. Gore wanted to re-count only the Democrat-heavy counties, rather than the whole state. Even the leftist newspapers who conducted independent audits of the election agreed unanimously that Bush won Florida in '00.

So why don't you and the rest of your ilk jump on your "low horses" and ride off into the sunset. We don't need your type in Washington.

3. Leslie Thompson,
This sham is ongoing and getting worse.

I knew nothing about this last November. Since January of this year I discovered on this blog, my local auditor mishandled 783 provisional ballots, mostly from WSU and felons were allowed to vote.

My daughter tried to change her registration for this primary from Whitman County to Pierce County. No only did she receive ballots from both counties, she received the previous owners' ballots at her new home in Pierce County. My daughter now has in her possession, FOUR absentee ballots for this primary election. Of course she isn't going to vote them. She is honest. But we found out last November, through the fine work of Stefan and others on this board that helped him, there are just enough dishonest people out there to throw an election.

Is this what you want Leslie Thompson? Do you really want the stain to be there for all to see?

Election reform is a joke and we all know it.

4. Leslie...get over Florida, it was a fair election. Even if it wasn't there is nothing I can do to change it since I vote in Washington. Voting problems in Florida are for it's citizens to correct, and it is my understanding they have done so. Now it is Washington's turn to clean up elections...so are you going to help, or just stand around and whine??

5. Why can't we all just take Stefan's comment for what it is: prudent advice. Everyone, stop trying to make mountains out of molehills!

6. Why is it that whenever KC and Washing election procedures are discussed here, the dems' only retort is to bring up Florida? Do they have nothing else to say? Do they need geography lessons? It would seem that even with them, KC is indefensible in their ineptness and corruption. As always, no solutions offered, only criticisms of conservatives. And who needs to get a real life?

Posted by: katomar on September 20, 2005 07:49 AM
7. Libertarian...because almost a year later, we are sick and tired of rabid moonbats misrepresenting what actually happened in Florida, and using it to excuse all illegal election activity in Washington. There is no excuse to not clean up election fraud in Washington wherever we find it, not Florida, not Ohio.

If you mail your ballot, remember to check the mail pick-up times on the drop box. Some around here have recently changed to earlier times. Happy voting everyone!

8. Hm, I live in Everett and am disabled. Recently I asked for absentee ballots and here we are, Sept. 20 and they haven't sent one. They have managed to send them before....
Now, there is little point in voting in Everett unless you like demorats, but still.

Posted by: pdotfu on September 20, 2005 09:17 AM
9. Ummm, unless you are voting in the Port commissioner primary, you won't be voting. There are three port commissioners and only those in the geographical district vote in the primary, while in the general, the total port district gets to vote.

All the polling places are shut down except those in the appropriate Port district locale.

In my opinion, this is a disgrace that many, many local races are contested both in the primary and some in the general. What did we have, citizen burnout after the last presidential election?

All politics is local.

10. I was concerned about that, so I took all of my provisionals down to the polls today. I asked them if I could fill out a few provisionals while I was there, and they said that that would be fine.

Have fun at the polls!

11. I was concerned about this as well, so I took all of my absentee ballots down to the polls this morning and put them in the box. While I was there I asked if I could fill out a few provisionals and they said that that would be fine.

Have fun at the polls!

Just kidding, of course.

12. With many counties going to all mail voting, we need to be sure that proper care is being taken to protect every legal voter's franchise. I applaud Stefan for his dogged determination to make sure that KCEs handling of ballots is visible and above board - keep it going.

As for Florida (again), the main SCOTUS decision was 7-2 to overturn the Florida Supreme court on Constitutional grounds - hardly a Republican plot. The 5-4 decision was on the remedy:

"The Supreme Court of Florida has said that the legislature intended the State’s electors to “participat[e] fully in the federal electoral process,” as provided in 3 U.S.C. § 5. ___ So. 2d, at ___ (slip op. at 27); see also Palm Beach Canvassing Bd. v. Harris, 2000 WL 1725434, *13 (Fla. 2000). That statute, in turn, requires that any controversy or contest that is designed to lead to a conclusive selection of electors be completed by December 12. That date is upon us, and there is no recount procedure in place under the State Supreme Court’s order that comports with minimal constitutional standards. Because it is evident that any recount seeking to meet the December 12 date will be unconstitutional for the reasons we have discussed, we reverse the judgment of the Supreme Court of Florida ordering a recount to proceed.

Seven Justices of the Court agree that there are constitutional problems with the recount ordered by the Florida Supreme Court that demand a remedy. See post, at 6 (Souter, J., dissenting); post, at 2, 15 (Breyer, J., dissenting). The only disagreement is as to the remedy. Because the Florida Supreme Court has said that the Florida Legislature intended to obtain the safe-harbor benefits of 3 U.S.C. § 5 Justice Breyer’s proposed remedy–remanding to the Florida Supreme Court for its ordering of a constitutionally proper contest until December 18-contemplates action in violation of the Florida election code, and hence could not be part of an “appropriate” order authorized by Fla. Stat. §102.168(8) (2000)."

If the Rossi voters should "move on" after less than a year, then surely the Gore voters cam "move on" after five years.

13. correct: post at 7:40 a.m. should read Leslie "Thomason"

14. It will be interesting to see how many folks intentionally violated the law to test the system in KingCo. This would be the time to do it because they are primaries...with the outcome of most known. It would be interesting if someone tried to vote say 3 times....with 2 votes cancelling each other out so there is no impact if all 3 are counted. Would anyone have that courage??? Hard to say.

Posted by: Mr. Cynical on September 20, 2005 02:46 PM
15. I don't know. Democrats don't seem to have a problem with it.

Posted by: swatter on September 20, 2005 03:45 PM
16. Leslie Thomason,
Is this how you regard all whistleblowers? What happened to speaking truth to power?

Posted by: Bostonian on September 20, 2005 04:11 PM
17. Kudos to Leslie for speaking the truth here. I applaud that. It's obvious that the right wing reactinaries would react in force (as they have) -- ignoring your basic (and accurate) point: The Rs have no real desire to have a sound election...they just want their guy in.

When the tables were reversed, as you pointed out, the Rs sounded off about people speaking and votes counting. However, when faced with the same problem, they revert to pretending they were wrong the first time!

Go Leslie..don't let these negative nabobs derail you --- you are right..they are interested in power and power only.

Long live the voices of the people!

Finally: your point about no election being perfect is right on. Only those who didn't like the result would harp and harp as the folks here do. All the other elections throughout the centuries seem to be just fine....HMMMMMMM...same processes, just different results.

Posted by: Harry Partch on September 20, 2005 05:06 PM
18. Excuse me, but what "truth" did Leslie speak? I must have missed it.

***
Hearing the voice of the people is exactly what this is all about.

As an ex-Democrat, I am amazed to see how reactionary the Left really is, if Harry & Leslie are a sample.

19. Hey Harry - You spelled your own last name wrong (again!)

Whadda ditz ;'}

20. For the first time, I dropped my absentee ballot off at the polling place instead of taking the chance through the US mail. Hopefully, it at least eliminates the chance of getting lost before it even gets to the KCE receiving warehouse.

Posted by: Michele on September 20, 2005 08:37 PM
21. Leslie, funny you should bring that one up. I was just pondering the libs' 'perfect election' criticism. Obviously, there isn't likely to be a perfect election. But we have the right to expect a near-perfect election. Only those who WANT slop and fraud could be arguing for any less. If the last election had been near-perfect, we'd have a governor Rossi today. I'm convinced of that.

Posted by: Michele on September 20, 2005 08:40 PM
22. Why would people want to keep electing a party into leadership roles who's mantra is "its rediculous to expect to have a perfect election, so why don't you just shut up and live with the one that you have"?

Posted by: Sopater on September 21, 2005 07:56 AM
23. anyone notice that Harry and Leslie seems be confusing our party's goal with his! Gee Harry and Leslie, I thought it was you lefties who want your guy in or in the case of the Governor your gal at all costs. Even Ron Sims made it in the primary. When you really do your homework wich for you seems to be more than you can handle let the rest of us know!(including some democrats who belive in better leaders unlike yourselves)
