Truth held hostage

One of the most troubling things I've discovered from looking at the processed ballot envelopes from last November's election is that many of the corresponding computer records appear to have been suspiciously modified after the fact.

A few examples -- the voter registration records of the "Fatal pend" voters appear to have been modified and in some cases with improperly backdated voter registration dates; The data records for the provisional ballots that were counted for unregistered voters appear to have been deleted after the fact; and there were many other suspicious modifications, some which appear to have been done months after the election, even during discovery and the trial itself.

In order to understand who modified these data records and why, and whether these modifications were proper or improper, I sent a records request on September 30 for the voter database transaction log to both Sims' office and to Dean Logan. Of course, if there were innocent explanations for all of these suspiciously modified data records, Sims and Logan should be more than happy to release the transaction log and settle the questions to their advantage. But that's not what they did. Instead, they denied my request for the data, saying that I can't have it until weeks after the next election is certified, sometime in December, perhaps. I followed up with a pared down request that offered Sims and Logan three alternative methods to get me the transaction log records I'm most interested in as quickly as possible and in a manner that is most convenient for Dean Logan. I received no response.

The transaction log is essential information for the public to have so it can evaluate the integrity of the Elections office and make a judgment on Ron Sims' performance managing that office. The public deserves this information before this November's election. Obviously, Ron Sims doesn't want the public to have the information. One can only imagine what he's trying to hide.

1. It don't look good.

When Sims gets retired, are you still set on an elected auditor, who is basically an employee?

2. I suspect the stuff we'd really like to know, did not even make it in to the transaction log.

3. Can you share your findings and your records request along with Sims and Logan's denial - with Keith Ervin of the Seattle Times? Maybe a little bad press on the issue will get those records released before the election!

I honestly believe you have enough evidence of questionable record keeping from last November's election to launch a Federal investigation....(Actually - you've had enough evidence for almost a year now...) I know the Feds are reading the blog....Why are they just watching and not acting on this?

4. I'm not surprised. Remember the movable "mail the absentee ballots out to Iraq date"? They'll go to no ends to hide their crimes.

On another note - a dem PCO showed up ringing my doorbell on Sunday. He asked me what my #1 issue was and I replied "Election reform".

Unbelievably, he went into a defense of Logan. It was amazing, the contortions he spun himself into. The local dems are really nervous about all this. Keep up the great work, Stefan.

5. Shock! Horror! Surprise!

NOT

Sorry to say, but with all of the shenanigans that have gone on up there with the officials in KC always makes me a bit cynical about their motives.

6. As you are aware, considering your recent speaking engagement, AG McKenna is currently on a crusade to end this type of stonewalling. Since I am sure you have discussed this with him, what kind of assistance have you been provided, if any?

Great work Stephan! We all appreciate your great and dilligent work!

7. Time to sue them again, maybe?

8. This is status quo for King County. This scandal is not the first time they've done it and it won't be the last time they cover their collective butts with manipulted paper trails. They get away with it because the press is an accomplice. If we had a real media, Pulitzers would flow. But we don't, so they won't.

Maybe in another 10 years the alternative media will be in most households and the truth will be available to more than a handful of bloggers and their loyal, albiet quite small number of readers.

The county Board of Ethics is reviewing several Ethics charges of mine today against King County. I have no illusions. Just preparing to cross the Board of Ethics off the list with the rest of King County. Don't want to leave any doubt that ALL of King County is corrupt.

9. Realist,

According to the KCE reply to Stefan's request, they believe they can make an exception to the Public Disclosure law because they are busy with an upcoming election....I suppose they think that means that half of each year they don't have to provide disclosure in a timely manner because they will ALWAYS be in the process of preparing for an election!

So - they are basically saying that they will only provide requested documents in a lawfull and timely manner - a few months out of the year....due to their busy elections schedules?

I don't see where the law provides for their exception......

10. I can just hear it in Logan's office "Oh crap! There is a transaction log???" "MS Access never had a transaction log!"

Hey Dean Logan - Modifications to the transaction log will show up too! BUSTED!!

11.
There is something wrong with the people who work up there in that so called election office. How stuck on stupid can they possibly be? The PI has a link to a secured web site where KC county voters can check and see if they are registered and reminds everyone of the date to register to vote.

I checked Patricia Levesque with both of her birthdays and she is still registered as an absentee twice. Yet the PI reported that they had turned her name over for investigation and prosecution for double voting.

Don't they have to provide copies of the voter databases to various party delegates? How can they not have a computer system that allows them to hide the social security numbers?

12. There is only one possible explanation for tis, and that is they were caught with their pants down. It does not surprise me one bit that they are patching up their database to match their illegal actions, it is what I would expect Sims and Logan to do. Time for some real answers. In fact a "Real Good Time" for some answers! Keep up the good work Stephan, hold their actions high!

17. Stefan, I'm sure this is just a misunderstanding, KC elections is completely open and transparent...Mr. Logan says so all the time.

Still wondering how bad it has to get, and how much proof before feds (or somebody, anybody) launches a proper legal investigation. This situation will not get better until all is revealed and prosecuted, until then it is just illegal activity and cover-ups.

SO STEFAN!!!

You forget, Logan promised us he fixed the elections department.

fixed |fikst| adjective

(of a election contest) with the outcome dishonestly predetermined : the election is fixed— Mayor Daley fixed the Kennedy Nixon election.

19. Hmmmm, deleted. In dBase, FoxPro, Access and Paradox (I'm not sure about SQL), after you delete a record from a table or database, you have to remember to PACK (dBase and FoxPro command, I specialize in xBase) the tables or else the record will still be taking up space. The record will simply be marked as deleted, and any decent front end software would be written to not show the record. Doesn't mean the data is gone, just that the front end is ignoring the record.

Logs can be faked or edited, but have you tried to examine the database files directly with a hex editor?

Or is this just a printed list and you don't have access to the source files?

20. It will buy them just enough time to hold ANOTHER press conference to cry "witch hunt" and spin blatan lies to about 2-3 other accusations.

Or at least that's what their track record would indicate.

Posted by: Andy on October 17, 2005 07:00 PM
21. Stefan along with David Irons ought to team up and hold a press conference after these findings are summarized and conclusions reached- which could be soon, then throw out the gauntlet to Sims and Logan. (Maybe not a probable scenario), but something like that would be a very effective campaign tool.

22. OK...Way off topic here...But someone just pointed out to me something frightening about Initiative 901 (Smoking Ban)...

901 actually has the un-American gall to try to ban smoking in private residences! If you use your home for daycare or adult care or ANYTHING that links you with Social Services...you cannot legally smoke in your own home if 901 passes! This is an insane intrusion into our private property and civil rights! How far is this crap going to go?
I cannot imagine anyone so filled with anti-smoking sentiment that they would allow further trampling of our property rights! Private residences for God's sake! Once they get their foot in your front door with one law....they will keep going! Remember - they started in your front yard with the CAO! Now they want in your house...Next they will want to enter your home without permission to inspect your recycle bins, your laundry, your paint colors - are they conforming? Are your kids rooms messy?
Just another reason why it's so important to clean up our elections! Who in the Hell will know what actually passes or fails with our initiatives? Ron Sims can control the entire state's outcome with a fraudulent King County election.....

23. Interesting find, Stefan! You're doing great.

Everybody else: one way you can help is to volunteer for door-belling on David Iron's campaign.
How does this help? Because walking the precincts helps find dead / moved voters who are still on the rolls (after Logan claimed to clean them out).

Posted by: Mike S. on October 17, 2005 08:43 PM
24. Logan is currently helping out in Bagdad:

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - Iraq's election commission announced Monday that officials were investigating "unusually high" numbers of "yes" votes in about a dozen provinces during Iraq's landmark referendum on a new constitution, raising questions about irregularities in the balloting.

Word of the review came as Sunni Arab leaders repeated accusations of fraud after initial reports from the provinces suggested the constitution had passed. Among the Sunni allegations are that police took ballot boxes from heavily "no" districts, and that some "yes" areas had more votes than registered voters.

The Electoral Commission made no mention of fraud, and an official with knowledge of the election process cautioned that it was too early to say whether the unusual numbers were incorrect or if they would affect the outcome.

25. Stephan,

Do you need more money to hire a lawyer to press the legal case from what ever angle? Obviously the local government is incapable of policing itself so what can we do to force their hand? Do you need the additional funds at this time?

Posted by: timman on October 17, 2005 09:25 PM
26. Seadog,

Actually, despite the unusually high number of yes votes in a few Iraqi precincts, it looks like overall, the elections there are probably run better than in King County.

I don't think we are going to get the Seattle moonbats to commit to being purple inked anytime soon to prevent them from double voting.

Posted by: Jeff B. on October 17, 2005 09:27 PM
27. Deborah,
Thank you for posting that. I have felt this way since I first heard about this initiative. It is so intrusive. I cannot imagine why anyone would vote for it. All this is going to do is give the government one more thing to police at their will. That is damn scary to me.
Thanks for your off topic comment!

On topic: I saw a poll today that had Irons at 47 percent, Sims at 43 percent, undecided at 7 percent. That's good news. For the good of the entire state, Elect David Irons!

28. This is exactly why a copy of the database from 15 days prior to the election would be useful.

Comparing the one on 'the day of' and 'the deadline' -> a hopefully short list of potential problems. But they have actual _names_. The _voter_ doesn't necessarily know (or care) if they're registering in violation of law. But they _all_ need to be challenged - because _IF_ KC is actually backdating things, _someone_ of these voters will let it slip. A huge _intentional_ conspiracy is tough to hide. A huge unintentional 'distributed vote fraud' requires getting back to the actual voters.

Posted by: Al on October 17, 2005 10:47 PM
29. Heh--Seadog,I heard that one Iraqi voting area had 3,000 more votes than voters. I wondered out loud whether King County was running that election....

31. How can the taxpayers in Seattle put up with paying for audit after audit and still have these problems? What are the auditors looking at? Are they just interviewing people and writing a report on what the people say?

Deborah,

I pointed that out yesterday in a post about foster care, after I read the state pamphlet with the link that Stefan provided. But I still haven't gone to the actual RCW's to check to see if it bans smoking in your house or if it was already banned. I have a nice size yard, but I don't think I could get 25 feet away from one of my doors, except one small part of my back yard.

Posted by: sgmmac on October 17, 2005 11:38 PM
32. sgmmac,

Smoking in your residence currently is NOT banned by law. The 901 initiative will ban smoking in your private residence if you run a licensed daycare, adult care, foster care or similar social service care on the premises....And they say nothing about granting a 25 foot smoking zone for your residence. So - If you are taking care of your elderly mother, and recieving any type of social services for her care...you cannot smoke in your own residence and neither can your mother. It doesn't matter if the people you care for are on the premises or not at the time you smoke....The creators of 901 are trying to make a *Nanny* link to your property rights via any Social service care you or your charges receive.

The local police are simply not going to be able to enforce this ban. If they are ordered to - then our true crime rates will skyrocket and there will be lawsuits. It's these so called *Health* Inspectors that are named in this initiative to enforce this ban that bother me. We see the abuse currently by many wannabe law enforcement officers. Code enforcement officers who don't like the non-conforming color of your house or your car that's in need of a paint job , the CAO troopers who want to fine you for cutting your blackberries, the Wildlife deputy dogs who assault and fine you for trying to help an injured wild bird.. Can you imagine what these Health inspectors will be up to? Will they go door to door with a smoke meter? Talk to your neighbors?
These are the oppressive liberals....The nannys.
They don't believe you are mature enough to decide to enter a bar that has smoking in it. And now they want in your house...

To me - it's just absurd!

Not until the likes of her and Ron Simms screw things up so badly will the left leaning regular folks abandon the insanity and beg for salvation.
(Forget the far left-they will never see the light)

Then and only then will the balance shift and we will have a chance of moving forward focusing on outcome vs. intent. Thereby fixing much of what is wrong.

Today, he is completely the opposite of everything he used to be. Seems all things really ARE possible.

I grew up in Eugene Oregon, in the 60's, to Socialist parents, and was indoctrinated endlessly about the goodness and purity of Communist ideals. When I left home, and discovered my place in the real world I realized everything I'd been told as a child was total BS. My parents are unhappy, angry, poor, and blame everyone but themselves. Perfect Democrats. I bought them a house last year.
