Come Make Your Voice Heard

Every other year the King County Republican Party adopts a new platform. In 2004 it was significantly revised to reach out beyond the traditional base of Rs in the state. This year, the process will be even more open, including public hearings and an online form where you can register your opinions. The platform committee will review all public feedback when writing the 2006 platform.

You can take the online platform questionnaire here.

Three public hearings will be held. All Republicans are welcome to attend. Dates below or on the King County GOP website. All meetings begin at 6:30 pm.

1. Andy,
Already the survey is out of whack. "Election integrity" is nowhere to be found in the 'Most Important Issues' question.

2. Umm, unless I missed something it doesn't look like they want us there...I don't see a time for the meeting. Also, the link in this article to the King County GOP website is wrong.

Posted by: Darth Voter on February 26, 2006 10:45 AM
3. Indeed. This canned survey is so top-down that there's no place to inject sentiments other than ratification of one or another topics pre-selected by an invisible Committee.

The Party is inclusive, right? If it's in the beginning stages of the runup to the next election, this survey should properly be soliciting new ideas via individual opinions. They needn't be prolix - a small text block, say 100 words, would suffice.

4. Darth, Sorry for the broken link. It's fixed now. Also, the meetings all begin at 6:30pm. I've updated the article accordingly.

5. Andy, thanks for the update.

As a notice for everyone, right now you can't submit the questionnaire, the server is down.

6. Now 3:40 p.m. and still unable to submit questionnaire.

7. 1 The survey does NOT work using Mozila or Netscape. Also other lookup features on the site, ie your precint, do not work w/ Mozilla or Netscape.
2 I can access the survey via a Mac using Zebra? but it does not allow you to post the results
3 What's the point of having a survey if you want the individual's name, mailing address, and email.
4 If your objective is to keep "the tinfoil hats" from queing the survey, you have the name, address, and email as the 1st question. However, participation will probably drop.
5 Since I'm getting 15 to 20 spams a day since KCGOP got my email address, do you plan to share this feature with others who complete the survey.
6 It appears the KCGOP website was built strictly for MS Explorer and does not support Netscape, Mozila, Opera?, and the Mac and Unix browsers.

8. I appreciate all the comments about the platform questionnaire and the caucuses. I have forwarded Green Lake Mark's to our webmaster for his input.

The platform questionnaire was written by the WSRP for the use of all counties. We are adding a section on Election Reform which should be up today. If you have specific comments on areas that are not addressed, please email info@kcgop.org.

The server is up now and we are again receiving questionnaires. The reason we require name, address and email is to ensure the integrity of the information. We want input from King County REPUBLICANS, not those who would try to influence our platform from the outside. Already we have received several submissions frmo outside King County and a couple anonymous ones. These will not be tallied. Those from outside King County will be forwarded to the WSRP.

9. My question is: How will the KCGOP determine who is and isn't a Republican simply by their name, address and e-mail? Does the KCGOP claim to know every single Republican in King County by name?

Posted by: Republcan In Exile on February 27, 2006 11:47 AM
10. As the KCGOP webmaster I would like to personally address Green Lake Mark's concerns-

1 The survey does NOT work using Mozila or Netscape. Also other lookup features on the site, ie your precint, do not work w/ Mozilla or Netscape.

The survey works in all major browsers: Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Safari. The other "lookup features" on the site are provided by King County and others and I have no control over their compatability.

2 I can access the survey via a Mac using Zebra? but it does not allow you to post the results

If by Zebra you mean Safari then your configuration must have problems because I just tried it and it works fine.

3 What's the point of having a survey if you want the individual's name, mailing address, and email.

Ross addressed this question in his post.

4 If your objective is to keep "the tinfoil hats" from queing the survey, you have the name, address, and email as the 1st question. However, participation will probably drop.

Again, this was addressed by Ross.

5 Since I'm getting 15 to 20 spams a day since KCGOP got my email address, do you plan to share this feature with others who complete the survey.

I would like to see evidence that your receiving spam is directly related to being on the KCGOP mailing list. We do everything in our power to safeguard all addresses in our possession.

6 It appears the KCGOP website was built strictly for MS Explorer and does not support Netscape, Mozila, Opera?, and the Mac and Unix browsers.

Funny you should say that. The site is built on an Apple PowerBook and is extensively tested to make sure that it works in as many browsers as possible. I use Safari almost exclusively and I would be the first to notice if there was a compatability issue. If you are basing that claim on the fact that the "lookup funcions" on the site don't work in ALL browsers then I would ask you to look again.

If anyone has input, feedback or suggestions for the site, please feel free to contact me and I would love to chat with you.

11. In answer to Republcan (sic) in Exile, no, we do not know the name of every Republican in King County. However, people are less likely to post bogus questionnaire answers if they have to provide personal information. Obviously this is not a perfect solution, but it does prevent a lot of mischief such as people submitting more than one questionnaire or democrat activist groups submitting large numbers of questionnaires that would affect the results.

12. In 2004 it was significantly revised to reach out beyond the traditional base of Rs in the state. This year, the process will be even more open, including public hearings and an online form where you can register your opinions.

This sounds like an open invitation to non-Republicans to come and have a say in our platform. Providing a name, address and e-mail, whether authentic or not, would not prevent them from doing so.

The platform is supposed to be a statement of grassroots Republicans of our principles and policy expectations, not a campaign propaganda to "reach out beyond the traditional base". Any attempt to reach out should be done by the candidates and their campaigns and they should be doing so by persuading the undecided voters that Republican principles are the best principles and how they would go about implementing them.

13. Republican in exile,

You make some great points, but you know
what? I really believe thats what they want.
Then they can say see we were right conservatives cant win in king county.
After all the king gop leadership are such experts at winning elections anyway.

Posted by: phil spackman on February 27, 2006 01:44 PM
14. Republican in Exile . . . why do you reagan wingers have to be so contrary? The last time I checked OUR platform was a statement of ALL Republicans. Not just the ones you deem qualified by virtue of membership in your little club.

I guess the real question here is - why are you so concerned with the King County GOP? Isn't there enough trouble to be had in your own county?

15. Matthew or Ross--
Last night when I attempted to fill out the form the results were going to a cgibin at "Fay Besharat" at her web address? Why was that and is it still set up that way? It doesn't make a lot of sense to have them going to the server of a private individual.
Also, who "owns" the results of the survey and who is entitled to review them? Will they be published?

Posted by: Mary on February 27, 2006 02:35 PM
16. AliciaCR,

Wow coming from someone who supported a known
liar for state Chair. This is pretty choice on
your part. Before you start taking shots at
someone you need to realize that king county is
not a bed roses itself right now.

What makes you an expert on issues and
candidates anyway? We here in King have
had such great success in winning elections
lately. The fact of the matter is had the
Gop leadership started listening to some
of these people the results would probably
be different by now.

Posted by: phil spackman on February 27, 2006 02:50 PM
17. Mary,

Matthew will answer your technical questions.

Regarding the data, the office staff is compiling the data into a spreadsheet. This spreadsheet will be given to the Platform Chairman to use at the committee hearings. The KCGOP owns the data - decisions have not been made about releasing any of the information beyond the Platform Committee. No one's personal information will be released nor will any responses be connected to a specific name.

I hope this answers your questions.

Posted by: Ross Marzolf on February 27, 2006 03:16 PM
18. Mr. Spackman - Who should the "leadership" be listening to - you? I haven't read a post from you (in all your profundity) that would have produced a constructive result.

Get over yourself!

19. AliciaCR,

Not opposed to ALL Republicans having a say in what the platform says. In fact, I prefer it. What I am opposed to is having the survey posted online where anyone, Repubilcan, Democrat, Green Party, Libertarian, Constitution Party, Communist Party, etc., etc. or even independents having a say in our platform.

As for our "little club", The Reagan Wing happens to be a chapter of the largest Republican organization in the nation--National Federation of Republican Assemblies www.gopwing.com

As for the reason I'm so concerned with King County: what happens there, affects the whole state, in case you haven't noticed. This operation has similarities to the King Co. elections dept. --wide open for fraud, no ID required.

Posted by: Republican in Exile on February 27, 2006 04:16 PM
20. AliciaCR,

There are a lot of people in this county
that have good ideas to make the King Gop
sucessful.Since your asking about me.I will
answer it this way,I have lived in King
count about four years now.Having come
from Skagit where they had one of the
best county chairman in the state named
Mark Hulst.

Since I have lived here I have repeatly
voluntered to be the Pco in my precinct.
They have not had one in at least 5 years
I'm told. Each time they refuse to allow
me to be Pco.Why?because I'm Outspoken
about the king gop leadership and they
don't like that.

So out of frustration I started my own
blog exposing some of these people for
what they really are.I have offered some
ideas some of which I knew they wouldn't
like.I have helped on some campaigns

AliciaCR,

This is scary stuff here,You have an out
of control County party leadership.
They would rather silence those that
disagree with them.Than hear them out
for the sake of party unity. As long
this continues to happen they will lose
elections and will not have unity.

What's worse is they continue to drive
voters away with there behavior.Whether
they ever get the large block of Steve
Hammond voters in district 5 back remains
to be seen. Yeah I know what needs to
be done to fix things here but there
not going to listen to me.

21. Mary,

I made a mistake when I entered the form processor link into the code. I am 100% responsible for both the KCGOP and Fay's sites and am the only one who has access to the servers in which they are hosted. I have fixed the link now so it processes through the kcgop.org domain. I apologize for the mixup.

1. The survey now works w/ Mozilla. It did not work in Netscape 7 and Mozilla Firefox 1.5 Thurs nite Feb-23 when enews@kcgop.org was read.
2. I tried the survey using Safari Sun eve Feb-26. The form allowed you to answer questions but would not "accept" the survey. Since I was accessing yahoo and other email remotely w/ out difficulty, I think the configuration of my friend's Mac was good enough.
3. The survey from WSRP is not well written
4. Maintaining the integrity of the database is valid; however, name, address, email, phone # should be the first question not the last
5. I'm getting SPAM from Ruth Gibbs, Louis & Pedro, and Bob Strauss plus the Sober worm virus dba "hi,_ive_a_new_mail_address" using a major party official's email address. Since the party official practices safe computing, his name was taken from some unsophisicated individual who uses Outlook for their home pc.
6. The KCGOP.org site works now, the survey did not work Thur nite in Netscape or Mozilla. My technology guru use to write html in 1996 using a Mac. He would ask us non webmasters to navigate the site. Even though he tested it intensively, we would generally catch a problem.
7. I may attend the platform Tues nite depending on what time I get out of the office and if I can resist the Sirens of Mardi Gras.

Posted by: Green Lake Mark on February 28, 2006 12:37 AM
23. I wouldn't lose any sleep over fraudulent platform discussion/poll results/debate. After all, whatever is adopted has no practical effect whatsoever on anything.

It's about as important as a vision statement.

24. I noticed a few new questions were just added regarding our King County Elections. Nice to know someone is still concerned about that continuing nightmare.
