Driving Mrs. Gregoire

Over the years, D.W. "Brownie" Brown has driven 'em all - one top dignitary or another - in Tacoma's annual (Daffodil Festival) Grand Floral parade, in the backseat of his snazzy 1948 Jaguar convertible. The vigorous 81-year-old was scheduled to drive Mrs. Gregoire in the parade last weekend. But, as the Tacoma News Tribune reports today, after submitting his drivers license, he was eighty-sixed on the basis of his age, and ended up way back in the pack, driving Tacoma's deputy mayor.

Gregoire's office is referring questions to the state patrol, which says it was a safety issue. Maybe she was concerned the car would contain "talk show radios." Here's a great idea for Christine's next parade gig, one with real Big "D" populist appeal: she can drive herself.

1. I didn't go. Why watch a bunch of people like Gregoire, who think they are important, being chauffered down the street?

And didn't Gregoire fawn over the leader of a tyrannical country earlier in the week?

2. She's a burr on the butt of this state, that's for sure.

3. What is Fraudoire doing being driven around anyway? What happened to all that crap about "trip reduction"? Oh, that's for the little people, I guess. Fraudoire is special...

4. If Mr. Brown was truly considered incapable of driving, he wouldn't be behind the wheel at all. Just one more example of Ms. Gangrene showing her true colors.

5. Let her walk, like the marching bands do. She can be a one-person band, tooting her own horn.

6. If it was unsafe for him to drive Gregoire, why was he allowed to drive the deputy mayor? Hypocrisy at its best, if you ask me.

7. Actually, someone ought to find out about D.W. Brown's party affiliation. I bet this was politically motivated.

8. The questions that need to be asked of the governor's office are based upon this: a staffer for Gov. Christine Gregoire asked festival organizers to provide the name and birthdate of Gregoire’s designated driver.

Why was the birthdate required? Do other dignitaries riding in the parade also ask for birthdates? It doesn't appear the Daffodil Festival has an age requirement, so why does the governor? Why wasn't race, creed or color asked? Sexual orientation?

I also find it interesting that a governor's staffer handled this on the front end, and then they punt to the State Patrol to provide cover ... as if the State Patrol is responsible for age discrimination.

9. Good idea about Gregoire walking the parade route, but they'll need to suspend the leash law for the duration.

10. Who will walk behind Gregwhore to scoop her Poop? Goldy.

Why not? Like most of the other 'Rats, he's already got his nose up her bum.

(Sorry for the nasty image, I couldn't help it.)

11. A few years back I worked scales for the WSP. I stopped one truck the driver hopped out of the cab and jogged over. I took him to be in his late 50s or early 60s.

I looked at his DL and did a double take on the birth-date.

He was born in in 1912. Driving big rig at 87 years of age. He told me he got bored with retirement and started driving truck he had been driving for 30 years.

He was spry, sharp as a tack and could easily pass for 60.

Unless D.W. Brown is shown to be a safety hazard, Queen G should be accused of ageism

12. I belong to a few groups that have several people in it that are older than DW. They drive to and from meetings and some even "snowbird". Ability, rather than Age should be the issue.

13. I'm being all small-towney here and having covered a few Daffodil events, I can say that the parade is about the students and community members who take part in it. Politicians and community leaders are there (supposedly) to show their support to the students and volunteers who've given up so much of their time to put this show on.
The fact that Gregoire chose to ride in another car is small potatoes to me. Maybe she likes the '65 Mustang convertible or 2005 Prius more. Or maybe one of her friends has a snazzy ride that she wants to tool around in.

15. If he had what it takes to drive JP Patches and Brakeman Bill up Pacific, he should be able to handle Gertrude no problem.

16. Reporterward - I think the issue isn't that she may have preferred a different car, I think it is more that the choice to move to a different car included the age of the driver, which I think is inappropriate.

17. After all, it takes a Democrat to really show us how to discriminate against people.

I think he ought to fix Chistine's wagon by filing an age discrimination suit against her.

After all, she has already admitted to doing it. (It was not like he was going to be driving her at SIR). Obviously, he demonstrated that he can drive 10 MPH in a parade (since he was in the same parade).

Ought to be a slam dunk.

18. Why don't all of the politicians ride together in a bus to show that they really do support mass transit?

Posted by: PW on April 25, 2006 12:22 PM
19. I guess Gregoire walked the Daffodil route anyway.
I'll actually give our Governor (who tied in the 2004 race) the benefit of the doubt.
It could be a staffing problem with Democrat handlers who were too rude and didn't know how to let this older gentleman down easy.
Maybe she wanted to ride on a friend's or a big contributor's car? That's fair enough. I noticed in the TNT article that they didn't tell who the replacement driver was.
Either way, I'll keep my battle-axe honed for larger and more important topics.
Although I do love the intentional (coincidental) focus on politicians' transportation choices this week.

20. Reportward,
"Either way, I'll keep my battle-axe honed for larger and more important topics."

Really now. Let's be honest.

If this was a Republican Governor and she or he had done this,
well you would need a Steam Shovel. Just to keep up with the
reporting on how insensitive she or he was by their actions.

Like I said before, a slam dunk case of age discrimination.

To be glossed over by a press indentured to the Democratic Party.

Posted by: Mike P on April 25, 2006 02:58 PM
21. All that had to be done was state Gov. G. prefers to ride with so and so in the parade.

Done deal.

But no, a licensed driver that no one is claiming as a hazard gets axed because of the age on his DL.

Where is the ACLU, the AARP, the Ragin' Grannies.

Let a R even make a crack about someone's age and those groups would be have 3 press conferences a day until the R resigned.

22. Mike P.

Don't get me wrong, I'm no fan of Gregoire.

You're probably right about how this horrible case of injustice, apartheid, agism and discrimination would play out if it were Dino who did this.
But just because my colleagues in the press do something wrong or because they lack perspective in covering an issue doesn't mean that I'll be cheering for the same thing to happen when the shoe is on the other foot.
There are certain parts of the political battlefield where engagements need to be fought and others where any sort of conflict needs to be avoided at all costs.
It's a mildly humorous anecdote but I don't really see too much to be gained here other than being a somewhat entertaining subject of a blog post.

Post Script: With my puckish sense of humor, I kind of like using the word battle axe in the same sentence as "Chris" Gregoire.

23. I didn't think you could top the great scandel of Burners A's in law school, but this comes close.

24. Reporterward: "For the want of a nail, the battle was lost." Sometimes it is the little things that change the course of history. The point of many who have already posted is that if this was a conservative, the noose would be ready.

Compare the immediate uproar over the state lawmaker who used the old "in a woodpile" expression versus the response to the BCC math professor in the papers. Only when the local press realized this had grabbed the national stage did they finally write up the BCC incident and even then they tried to minimize situation. Gosh, guess who's the conservative--the lawmaker or the professor?

25. She ought to be on a bus riding through the parade. Rememnber, trip reduction.

Don't do as she does, do as she says. That is real leadership, the Queen's way!

Posted by: Gs on April 25, 2006 06:25 PM
26. The BCC situation was certainly not worthy of national headlines. A community college teacher saying (or asking) something stupid isn't exactly a stop the presses situation. It's a local news item at best. It's always frustrating to me to see the utter lack of scope or perspective some of these so-called stories have.

I always like the little poem about the nail. Kind of cute, but in 99.9 percent of situations, the want of a nail usually means that only a horseshoe gets lost. Especially when you have grapeshot, canister and musketballs flying around, people usually have better things to worry about, like ducking, then checking their horses hooves.

Good blog fodder but I'll be keeping my powder dry for the bigger battles. (Battle axe - Christine Gregoire)

One thing did strike me though. Upon rereading the TNT story, the real issue here is why the State Patrol is being made to run flak duty on this?

Posted by: Reporterward on April 25, 2006 06:34 PM
27. Based on the photos of her that accompany her propaganda pieces in the local rags, she probably didn't want someone who looked younger than her in the same car.

28. No wonder the Queen decided to walk the parade route, the last time she got in the rode in the back of a car she got her buns rug burned on the Astoturf in the back of Bill Clintons El Camino!

29. Gs says she ought to be riding a bus. A short bus should do.
