Mrs. Gregoire goes shopping

Mrs. Gregoire1 is appearing in a taxpayer-funded television commercial, ostensibly to promote Washington state produce, but really to promote her own 2008 election campaign. A video of the commercial, which features the implausibly elected officeholder, implausibly strolling through a grocery store pushing a shopping cart, is here. (I'm not sure how effective it will be. Ask yourself honestly, does the sight of Mrs. Gregoire increase or decrease your appetite?) A friend from Olympia e-mails that this isn't the first time that Mrs. Gregoire has used tax dollars for a self-promoting "public service" TV commercial --

For the second time in a matter of months, Gov. Gregoire is using taxpayer dollars to feature herself in TV/radio/print advertisements ... This is a very worthy cause, but it also has the feel of a campaign ad, especially for an elected official who has made it very clear she's pursuing Eastern Washington/farmer votes. Featuring her - rather than, say Department of Ag Director Valoria Loveland - arguably mounts to a taxpayer funded kickoff of her 2008 campaign.

This campaign is very reminiscent of the recent veteran's campaign [video posted here], another desirable voting block. In the 2006 session, Sen. Bill Finkbeiner sponsored a bill that would have prohibited statewide elected officials from using taxpayer dollars in this manner (SB 6705). To no one's surprise, the bill did not go anywhere.

One more item of note: I shop at the grocery store closest to the mansion and I don't believe I've ever seen Gov. Gregoire there. The thought that she runs to the grocery store on a regular basis (like the rest of us working moms) is actually quite funny.

1: The Evergreen Freedom Foundation has just released its long-researched database of suspected crimes in the 2004 election, totalling thousands more "votes" than eligible voters.

1. I'm sorry, but I had to LOL upon reading "..honestly, does the sight of Mrs. Gregoire increase or decrease your appetite?"

2. Anyone gullible enough to believe that a governor can go shopping without a security detail is also gullible enough to believe that Gregoire is good for WA.

It really doesn't matter what she does in these campaign videos because most voters will extract their retribution for 2004 by making sure that it's not even close in 2008.

3. will she carry her groceries on a bus, train, tram or monorail back home? what's for dinner? mac & cheese like her taxed constituents can afford? will her legal citizen housekeeper cook the meal? tacos tonight perhaps after Mr Fox's visit? will she ream out the clerk if her groceries were not counted correctly (like ballots) or let the clerk say "just get over it--move on--we won--start your healing process" does the commercial show her dropping a can or two into the homeless food bank bin?

4. did she use one of those snazzy WA food stamp cards?..."do you want some help out (of office!) with those groceries, M'aam?..."

5. I receive letters from all of my representatives in the WA house and senate paid for by public dollars. I think it’s disgusting. I get a letter with a nicely glossed 5 page pamphlet on how great each of my Reps did during the session - without any real information.

Don't pretend that Gregoire is doing anything unusual. My Reps are all Republican, and they are just as guilty. Bitch at the system, not just Gregoire. The mail campaign loophole costs us over 10 million a year in mailing and paper costs.

Whenever I see one I get very pissed off. Since I follow what is happening in Olympia I know the info they give is completely misleading, which makes the whole thing even worse. This year I mailed them back to my reps telling them how disgusting the letters were. The worst thing of all is that they have safe seats, so they didn't even need to exploit the loophole.

6. Gerald - be that as it may these politicians have a budget - right or wrong - for those activities. They do not use budgets from other departments to promote themselves. Why did she need to do it? Wouldn't a farmer, a nutritionist, or someone else more relevant to farming and food products be better?

7. Stefan - Please consider posting the Suspected Election Crimes release from the EFF separately. It is too important to be "below the fold".

After reading about Mrs Gregoire, followed by the EFF release, my hurl factor is approaching critical.

8. Now that's just nasty. She and a camera just don't get along. Betcha they cleared the store for her majesty to do her scene. I can't wait for the sequel.

9. Holy Crap... check out the first gentleman in that second ad!!

Do they have a stick up his @@@ or what?? and what's up with his eyes?

10. Isn't this a joke...with the sweater & blouse? She's hardly your average Harriet Housewife out for a stroll through the neighborhood market. I do my own shopping..doubt that she really does. How phony!!

11. In 2000 the election was close for Bush/Gore: In 2004 Bush had 2 things going for him from his first term that made winning a slam dunk.

1. 9/11
2. An idiot like Kerry running against him.

Gregoire not only has nothing to show for her first term but also has a gas tax, estate tax, an increased budget and a budget deficit stinking around her like road kill.

I've been thinking that she has been quietly trying to avoid the headlines; anything she does that makes the headlines is bad news.

12. The other point is that on and off camera Gregoire comes off as a hideous, mean and resentful person.

Not even her handlers have been able to overcome that. Putting her on camera is not a smart decision.

13. I'm with Gerald; the campaign literature disguised as district business (my legislators are Democrats) should stop.

But Gerald, Gregoire looks and comes off stupid, mean and resentful. That is the real story here, though I agree with your take.

Gerald

No. You didn't. House and Senate mailings can be up to four pages. Max. 11x17. And they must be limited to two-colors, not four. And "glossy" is out of the question.

I'd also be curious to know who are your Reps. and Senator. Often times, if the members of the same district are of the same party, they put out joint newsletters to save costs.

Gerald, your point has merit about public funds being used, but they are used by both parties and not to the extent you exaggerated. And it's not a loophole, so quit describing it as such.

16. Comrade Rep Sam "the Union Sham-man" Hunt sent out his multi page / multi color tax payer funded campaign letter earlier this spring.

17. From EFF:

Instead the Prosecutor said, “This office will NOT press criminal charges with respect to the 2004 election on the assumption that you made an honest mistake.”

There's precedent here...NOW and the Bill Clinton "One Free Grope" rule.

18. HA! You know it's false! She makes Milke do the shopping!!

19. Well maybe now she can pick up another tax payer provided gas guzzling nearly new Town car, from guess who, Mayor Nickels (Dollars).

I see Stefan's great work has forced him into a 31 mile per gallon hybrid.

I hope they got the heavy duty suspension on the Hybrid!

The queen surely could not be seen in anything other than a Cadillac or Town Car!

20. Re-defeat Gregoire in 2008 (but good this time) and help rid Olympia of the culture of corruption !

21. I must be naive. I didn't see anything wrong with the ad. It seems like the right thing for a Washington State governor to do. Call me when she starts promoting Mexican or California produce.

22. eric,

Are you saying that was Gregoire's hubby with the ventriloquist dummy eyes in the vet ad? He appears as if he is being remotely controlled. Gregoire may just be from another planet. We're doomed.

23. Elaine--it's the movie star, not the movie; why not some local farmer--give him-her 15 mins of fame in an ad--THEN maybe a cameo frame or 2 of a Gov or someone to seal the message; in fact, I would have had about 6 illegal aliens picking apples and smiling and chatting into the camera (English subtitles, of course) about their impending insta-citizenships and great free schools and free clinics in this COuntry liberals call 'opressive;'

24. The governorship is Rossi's for the taking in 2008. Even Joel Connelly foresees this and like his opinions or not, his political picks are usually pretty good.

25. When Mrs. Gregoire gives a speech, her staff requests that the organization provide email addresses for as many attendees as possible so that she can send a "thank you".

That's probably impressive to some WA voters.

I'm not one of them.
