I'm Running for Office

Actually I'm not. But Jerry Cornfield at the Herald thinks I am, and says so in this article which describes me as "Eric Earling, a Republican who says he one day will seek office in Snohomish County." I think he then meant to credit me for the paragraph that follows that statement in the story because that's what we talked about...and those readers interested in the number of unopposed legislative races, particularly in Snohomish County, may find the full article worth reading.

I've told Jerry I'm not running for office repeatedly, and a select crew of other questioners who keep asking. So let me say it publicly: I have no interest in running for office in the near future, and no plans to do so in the long-term as well.

Thank you.

[Mrs. Earling sighs with relief]

2. Sure. That's what Andy Jackson said prior to the 1824 election.
Now you say you won't seek office in Snohomish County. Howsabout King or Skagit huh? Or statewide? Amatuers up at the Herald don't know how to nail down you slick politician types with real questions.

4. Welcome to "The Steve Show"

I think "The Steve Show" has "jumped the shark" (no pun intended)

5. I wonder what he is getting paid to hijack these blogs. I am jealous actually, but he is effective at hijacking the threads.

Eric, keep up the good work, raise your family and then when that is done, and you still have a need for public service, go run for office. Keep in the political loop so you get lots of help somewhere down the road.

I knew a friend who knew Dan McDonald of the R party. Dan spent years and years doing what you are doing along with literature drops and helping out on campaigns. When he decided to run for State Rep or Senate, he had all his ducks lined up and became an extremely influential Senator.

Who knows what the future brings? All I know is that I like your posts and thoughtfulness.

6. Steve #5. You've got to be a liberal to post such a nasty personal attack. Absolutely uncalled for.

7. Comments from "Steve" deleted.

And since he's likely reading this, I should point out that I sometimes don't have regular access to the Sound Politics site, and don't always have the time to read each comment at every thread. Thus, sometimes I'm not able to clean up offensive comments instantaneously (though thankfully the need for such actions is rare), including those from the "the duke" that seemed to upset "Steve". I've edited one of those comments at my post about Luke Esser to delete "the duke" accusing someone of a crime. But contrary to Steve's conspiracy theories, just because I didn't have a chance to read through all the comments in a timely fashion doesn't mean what "the duke" posted met the standards of Sound Politics, let alone that I approved of it.

8. Thank you for the "steve"-ectomy, Eric. I'm sure "steve" would be perfectly happy to see Sound Politics degenerate into the anarchy that is HA. He seemed to be working many hours each day to cause that to happen, (maybe "swatter" is right and he's on the take). It's instructional, (and extremely funny), to observe how quickly comments over at HA degenerate into off-topic name calling.

9. Eric

I checked.

You deleted my post, which I knew you would do because of the language, but at the time you deleted my post, I still saw Duke's up.

I am 90 percent sure what Duke said wasn't true. Why 90 percent. Well you never know 100 percent about anyone regarding these things do you?

That is what makes it such an effective tactic. It creates doubt.

I have seen this at least two other times with campaigns I have worked on and it had been somewhat effective. Many people didn't vote for the candidates in question because of the rumors planted by the opposition (yeah, the opposition were Evanites). And to my knowledge with both of those candidates, nothing was ever proven and so I am 99.9 percent sure that the rumors were false.

I haven't checked the post yet. If you have finally deleted Duke, well about time. You sure didn't earlier when you had deleted me.

10. Slurs like these better be backed up by facts.

I hope you realize that Sound Politics and you could have been held liable. Sure, freedom of speech is most broadly defined when its regarding public people especially politicians. But that crossed the line.

11. But of course "the Duke" won.

It's out there for people to think "well maybe".

The seeds of doubt are sown.

Again, from the contacts I have this seems to be false. I am 90 percent sure about that. Why not 100? Well, I am not 100 percent sure about anyone when it comes to stuff like this, and it's that doubt of course that these things feed on.

12. I generally don't like feeding trolls but with one named "Steve" I just have to chime in.

Adam Sandler in the late 1990s sang a song about a particularly annoying "Steve" which is quite fitting in my humble opinion. Since the lyrics aren't safe for chillins and crum-crunchers try going to...

15. Steve apparently can't read, because my comment above clearly explained I don't have time to read through all the comments at once that might have appeared since I last visited the site...or checked my email to which the comments are emailed. I deleted his last, profanity-laced post at the Esser thread, then his initial tirade in the comments at this thread. I edited the last comment (#42) from "the duke" at the Esser thread when I actually read it early this morning because it directly accused Esser of criminal activity...I shouldn't need to explain that's over the line. And I shouldn't need to explain to "Steve" again, what I said above, that just because somebody posts something offensive here, and I haven't had a chance to delete it, doesn't mean it's approved, let alone endorsed. He of all people should understand that.

The only thing that is approved is Reporterward's motion above, by unanimous consent. In the meantime, based on his behavior thus far, I'm intend to delete all future comments from "Steve" because of his inability to engage in anything resembling civil discussion on this board. That being said, he has a charming ability to change his IP address so if you as a reader encounter his comments, please know they'll be deleted in due time.
