Mail Ballot Horror Show (XX): Opportunities for ballot theft

Second tidbit from Sunday's Herald "Mail-only vote makes for one long Election Day"

volunteers who once might have driven people to the polls are now preparing to deliver people's sealed ballots to the elections office.
What a great idea. Any Republicans want to join me to go door-to-door here in Wallingford to collect people's sealed ballots so we can deliver them to the elections office?

1. You know, I'll probably have a lot of time on my hands during the upcoming election. I'll bet I could offer to pick up at least 30,000 or so mail ballots and deliver them to the elections office, you know, just to make it easier on those folks who, at the last minute, don't have stamps! I'll bet I could do it mostly in King County, too! Glad to help in any way I can.

3. Stefan is joking, but that has happened in Oregon. In one case, imposters got into a Republican rally and collected mail ballots. Only later did the Republicans realize that no one knew the collectors. I think we can guess which party they belonged to.

And, in another case, "helpful" people stood outside a Post Office in Portland and offered to deposit mail ballots for drivers. They didn't.

(Not sure just who they were, but in most parts of Portland, throwing away ballots would help the Republicans. On the other hand, if it was a downtown business area, throwing away ballots might help the Democrats.)

4. Absentee Ballots (in this state at least) come with a little detachable tab with a number on it. You can go to the elections website, enter your number and verify whether your ballot was counted.
