Darcy Burner outsourcing volunteers from other states

Darcy Burner really wants to be a Congresswoman. Unfortunately she can't find enough supporters in her own district, so she's importing volunteers from other states (and countries, for all we know). The Daily Kos has the details:

"Darcy Burner's campaign is recruiting door knockers and phone bankers. They will pay airfare and provide supporter housing from Saturday to Tuesday. If your friends, family, neighbors have caught the bug - Darcy Burner needs them in Washington State!
And if they're in King County on election day, they could even get to vote for Darcy!

1. That's amazing if the Kos report is accurate. Party organizations usually pay for such travel, not campaigns. If Burner's campaign is in fact coordinating and funding such activity, rather than outsourcing it to party organizations, then that smacks of the Deaniac hordes that invaded Iowa in 2004...with not so great effect.

2. I find that really disturbing--if they can't find enough people to do it HERE, then what the *(%$ are they doing getting people from elsewhere, who don't live or (hopefully) vote here?
It's as bad as soliciting thousands of dollars from Massachusetts to help *Washington's* governorship stay Democrat. That isn't representational politics anymore, and I don't like it, no matter which party it is.

3. Nothing really new at all.

When Randy Tate ran for re-election, unions coughed up the money and recruited out of district full time campaigners...ten of them IIRC...

I talked to a couple of them, and they were indifferent, at best, about Smith. But, rather than sit through a layoff, they'd rather get a full pay check even if it means standing in the rain waving a campaign sign for someone that they didn't know that represents an electorate that they don't know.

Not paid for by the official campaign, but effectively the same thing.

Oh...and he also benefited from third party ads that essentially got him elected before even the primary. Yet, because they weren't counted as official donations, his reported financials were lower than Tate's, and he cried poverty at most of his events...

Hmmmm...sound familiar?

4. Does Reichert even have volunteers?

Posted by: michaelUW on October 31, 2006 02:46 PM
5. Proud to say I knocked on doors last Saturday for Congressman Reichert and Mike McGavick. And I actually LIVE in the district!

Posted by: Michele on October 31, 2006 02:47 PM
6. ..and at least three other actual 8th district volunteers were out in the same area at the same time that I was doing the same thing. and THEY live in the district, too! And that was just one location on one Saturday. This was going on in many locations. So michael, yes, Reichert doesn't have to fly his volunteers in to do doorbelling. sorry to rain on your parade.

7. It would be interesting if an ad could be made in time covering this topic.... Be kind of off topic though, I guess. Democrats like Darcy will always lose when Republicans focus on the issues.

8. Nothing new here. How many people did the GOP ship down to Florida to do faux protests outside the election commission building in 2000? This just means the Dem's still feel they can win the 8th.

Posted by: Cato on October 31, 2006 03:04 PM
9. What do you mean, Cato? In 2000, it was a national election. This is an election for one Congressional district out of what -- 435? Are you capable of grasping that people outside of Florida or even Palm Beach County could be concerned about the counting for a national election whereas people outside the 8th and especially not in the same state have no business with the campaign affairs of the 8th.

Posted by: ferrous on October 31, 2006 03:08 PM
10. ferrous: That's a bit much to expect from Cato. Only thing he's capable of grasping is straws.

Posted by: katomar on October 31, 2006 03:25 PM
11. Hey Cato,

Since you are a *MASTER* of strawman arguments, I want to try to be like you (just in this regard, nothing else).

How many people did the Democrats ship down to Florida to do faux protests outside the election commission building in 2000?

It's almost like I'm channeling you! It makes me feel very dark and scary.

12. They'll Need King County Elections to get her over the hump!

13. More like they'll need KCE to drag her stinky carcass across the finish line...

16. Careful there eric, it says they will pay airfare and provide supporter housing. You just might end up in a flea infested sleeping bag in tent city.

17. Or a Million dollar self cleaning outhouse in Seattle, when it is not being used by prostitutes and drug dealers...

Just another waste of taxpayer money by the democrats of this state....

18. With John Kerry's remarks today, Burner's chances were likely flushed down the toilet. Couldn't happen to a sweeter airhead...

Posted by: KS on October 31, 2006 07:01 PM
19. I heard that even the KOS people were freaking out about how damaging Kerry's statements were.

Posted by: Michele on October 31, 2006 07:08 PM
20. i don't think twisting Kerry's words compared to lies, deceit, more lies, endless war, defecits, sexual contact with pages, Delay, Abramoff, and many other things, will make those "middle row" voters sway to the right

21. # 20

How old are you? Do you think people quit listening to news, and read papers or internet after the age of 23?

His comments will peeve alot of WWII vets, or should I say the ones he hasn't peeved already. Then add all the family tree's to the Vet, and you have a pretty ticked off AMERCIA.

You can't seem to be agreed with here, why do you stay?

22. People really should look who is pulling Burner's strings - it's more than the same tired old D's in Seattle. The east side needs to get out the vote!

Posted by: Pablo on October 31, 2006 08:48 PM
23. I gave the contact info to my 3 kids living on the east coast. The are all very conservative and have no intentions of helping Ms Burner with her campaign. But they are going to use the free tickets to come and see their dear old dad in Seattle.

If you you have given money to Darcy then you should know that you may have paid for my family to come to the Northwest. While they are here I would't be surprised if they work on Reichert's campaign. How is that for Gotcha!

Thank You Very Much!!!

24. Gee, what a shock that a Republican would try something underhanded like that, but oh so common for them to be a part time parent. Seems you didn't think your little plan out too well though did you? You almost make me embarrassed to be a Rob.

Posted by: RobK1967 on October 31, 2006 09:04 PM
25. Part Time Parent?

Why do liberals always have to make stuff up?

For the record. My adult kids have all graduated from college and have their own professional lives. Unlike many liberal parents and their adult children, mine moved out on their own WHEN THEY BECAME ADULTS.

If a rich leftist pinhead wants to pay for their travel to Seattle....Good for them

Posted by: Rob on October 31, 2006 09:52 PM
26. How does that rant prove you aren't a part-time dad? I see that your kids learned their morals well from you, lying to get something. You must be so proud. Sorry to burst your bubble though but the Burner campaign is a bit more wise than you give them credit for. You don't think they know that there are losers out there who might try to take advantage of this?

Posted by: RobK1967 on November 1, 2006 06:44 AM
27. Chris, that made no sense. Your first statement meant to falsify my statement...but then you started talking about something all together. People who are mad at the 6 years of lies and deceit and have switched to voting for dems are not going to change their minds based on what another veteran said, regardless of how stupid (i personally thought it was stupid too). And Rob--> Dems make stuff up??? LOL! Um, turn your focus to a war that's happening a few thousand miles away and why we are there, then we can talk about which party "makes things up".
Oh, and vets here love the Dems--> Look at Senator Murray, and apparently DB denounced the statement made by Kerry. Bye DAve, Bye MIKE!, Bye majority in CONGRESS. Welcome fresh ideas, change, and prosperity. Go Darcy!

28. The Republicans do the same thing...what's your point here?

Posted by: Bubba Gump on November 1, 2006 02:04 PM
29. You can credit you boy Jesse Helms for starting this fad. This is a common place pratice in both parties.

BTW, Republican state house candidate Jim Hinez is using paid door bellers and sign wavers in the 26th LD (Gig Harbor-Bremerton).

30. And if they're in King County on election day, they could even get to vote for Darcy!

Pardon me.... didn't anyone catch this statement.

People who are not from WA....or this area should VOTE for her?

Can we say Cheating.

31. Perhaps I qualify as "outsourced." I currently live in portland while attending college, but I still vote and am active in the 8th district. I'm also quite confident there is no shortage of volunteers or support for either of these campaigns.

Now, let's talk about the "outsourcing" of funding for initiatives like 933, shall we?

32. And to follow up on this, I have some concerns about what I perceive to be comments in this thread that don't jive with American values. Students and activists from around the nation need experience. In this country we encourage internships, we support legislative and congressional pages and we involve young people in politics ultimately to preserve our process, standard of living and a national vision that is shared by all. It troubles me greatly to see that some have become so involved in partisan bickering that the bigger picture has been lost. It's easy to complain about thugs and liberals in the beltway, but where else is one to go when they want to learn, be involved and support America without drowning in the black hole that is D.C.?
