Voter database update

I updated our statewide voter database with the Secretary of State's release of November 27.

The release was cut before the canvassing of the Nov 7 election was finished, so only a small percentage of voters, limited to a few counties, show credit for voting this election. If you are not credited in this release, do NOT assume your vote wasn't counted. Check again with the next monthly update.

1. Looks like it varies by county again. Pierce seems to have pretty much entirely updated. Kitsap and King seem to have not gone in before canvassing time.

2. Oh, and as always -- cheers to Stefan for shelling out the cash and effort to keep this excellent resource out there!

3. Thanks Stefan, this allows all of us to be sure our vote was handled and counted. Although how it may have been handled and remarked is another issue.

4. Can anyone clear up how to get someone off of the voter rolls at one's address?

I know that two people listed at my residence were previous owners who have not lived here for years. I called the county auditor last year, and they said that after two years of inactivity, the voter registrations would automatically become invalid. But that is not the case. One former occupant of my house is still listed as active, although I have not seen any ballots other than my own ballot and my wife's. Fortunately, according to the voter DB this person has not voted in Pierce county since 2003, which is good because this person now resides in Illinois, but who knows if that ballot is floating around somewhere?

I also know that a voter across the street no longer lives at that residence, even though they are still listed as active.

So much for a secure system.

5. Jeff, that's a good question. Two other readers sent me private e-mails today asking the same thing. I'll dedicate a main post to answer it shortly.

6. Jeff,

First of all, above all, good luck!

The wife of Steve Cofchin, the Republican candidate in the 9th, is registered twice. I noticed this and emailed him about it. Evidently, he has called the Pierce County Auditor several times and told it would be removed - no luck.

If he can't even get a clear double registration of someone still residing at his house stricken, I can only imagine how cooperative they are about inactive voters at one's address.
