Congratulations To The UW

For placing sixth in this prestigious contest.  (It must be prestigious considering how much effort colleges and universities put into winning it.)  And congratulations to the Women Studies department for producing this winning entry:

Border Crossings, Borderlands: Transnational Feminist Perspectives on Immigration

Wouldn't it be fun to suggest to the department that they also offer a course titled "Border Fences: Masculinist National Perspectives on Immigration"?

No doubt state senator Jeanne Kohl-Welles, who is a part time lecturer in the department, is delighted by this win.

And I'll bet that Evergreen is hurt that they didn't place a single course on the list.

2. That class fits right in to my schedule. I'm almost tempted to attend the next one...

3. I am disappointed that they haven't gotten more recognition for their "domestic violence" check up hotline.

Men can call up a women's studies major to find out if they are a wifebeater or not.

4. Another thread asks "What should Gregoire cut". A good start would be to look at the course offerings at all of our public colleges and universities. This one would qualify for the chopping block.

5. They rejected my course on reading English indoor warnings on labels of combustible appliances.

It was called "Tolerance and Increased Effective Assimilation to Ameri-X, Your New Homeland."

6. Isn't this award similar to the one that the Miller Brewing Company just won... for "Best American Lite Lager Brewed in Milwaukee with a specific gravity of 3.1 to 3.3."

7. Given the UW Medical School paid $27 million in legal costs and a record $35 million civil penalty for overbilling the government for Medicare and Medicaid, this new award is not surprising

8. Liberalism is a mental disorder does not only thrive at Evergreen State. This only goes to show that the education system in this country is going down the toilet at all levels !

9. What can you say about such? Not much except: too much time on their hands.

10. But boy how bizarre for Occidental College (a private college situated in my native community of Eagle Rock in Los Angeles) to offer a class called "The Phallus". And we thought we'd seen it all.

11. Coming to a k-12 soon, especially if the mayor takes over and the usual suspects are in charge of the curriculum. Remember ebonics came from this crowd and was almost put into play in Oakland/Berkley. It is not about education, it is about pushing an ideology and agenda. If people are really educated, it is more difficult for them to become permanent victims.

12. WVH--you're the educator--tell me...

i'd hate to see the revised list of the "100 greatest books" once suggested by (the late) Mortimer Adler at U. of Chicago--

like one awakening from a coma: my q: "What Happened?!"

13. Could have been worse--could have been "transgendered" instead of "transnational."

Or was that course on last year's list?

14. Hey Jimmie,

Several years ago there were two books published by Hirsch, Kett, and Trefil called the Dictionary of Cultural Literacy and Cultural Literacy: What Everyone Should Know. The were roundly criticized by the diversity crowd because it was claimed that they favored the dominant culture. If one wants a demonstration of how ignorant many American's are, check out Jaywalking with Jay Leno. He goes to malls and asks people basic questions like what is the capital of California. The answers are hilarious, but very sad. All they contain is basic info that every American should know. The 100 greatest books is actually a series. It is interesting that the woman who so moved me that I got my doctorate, Marva Collins uses a classical education for her students at Westside Prep. Marva taught in the Chicago public schools for a number of years before the system forced her out, not because her students were failing, but they were succeeding beyond anyone's expectations. She took her savings and started Westside Prep. Kids that the public schools couldn't or didn't want to educate succeeded. She teaches a rigorous classical education with Latin, Greek, and the great books. I believe that charters are the best hope for low-income kids, particularly if one model is Westside Prep. Another model is Joe Clark, he believes in military discipline.

15. WVH--yes--know intimately well about Marva due to prev. geographics--what great role model--and, im told, she didnt put up with any crap--high expectations & disclipline. everyone buckled down. the "problem" kids came to like the direction, personal responsibility & guidance & came around.

"academic miracles" were performed. true--all it required was a 'give-a-damn' person who wasnt shackled by an apologist bureaucracy.

i've heard of Clark too, in passing.
why dont we hear more of her & her ilk in place of Jesse, Sharpton or the latest jailed gangsta rapper? guess the good ones are drowned out by the cacaphony of the ignorant. why doesnt the Seattle Times run a story about role models each week? front page, not buried?

16. You don't hear more about Marva and Clark because they are not secular progressives. Both of them are, dare I say it in this society, Christians. They believe very strongly in the Bible and the Ten Commandments, not the ten suggestions. The MSM are by in large secular progressives and they ridicule those of faith, particularly Christians. It does not fit with their moral relativism. Jackson and Sharpton are far more likely to view their theology in the form of the ten suggestions. They don't, as people of faith would say, in any manner, convict those in the MSM. You also don't hear very much about Bishop TD Jakes, Dr. Creflo Dollar, and Dr. Myles Monroe who are Black clergy who have large followings, but are not moral relativists. As I have said many times, secular progressive ideology has destroyed the Black community from both the inside and outside. From the inside, false leaders like Jackson and Sharpton have led their flock astray by not reinforcing values which would help them survive in mainstream society. From the outside, secular progressives use Black people as "useful idiots." Slowly, many are beginning to question that ideology.
