Another Reason Conservatives Get Annoyed with the MSM

I'm belated in getting to this editorial cartoon from David Horsey earlier in the week. As with his usual fare, his artistic talent in the genre of editorial cartoons is impressive, his use of caricatures, effective. The rub is the caricature he uses to portray the stereotypical "family values" conservative clan. Bluntly, the caricature is offensive.

Behold the obese, not so bright looking, conservative family unit. The husband's garish facial features fight a fearsome battle with his bulging tum-tum for the most disturbing aspect of his appearance. The wife's girth complements the blank stare in her eye; frumpy hair and uninspiring wardrobe provide added effect. Meanwhile, the nose-picking, flat-topped twerp adds a touch of ambiance to the life of the naive rubes. Quaint.

Yes, editorial cartoons are supposed to thrive on hyperbole. Horsey is master of the art form, and generally a visual pleasure well deserving of his Pulitzer Prize. But this caricature falls lock step into the distorted view many members of the MSM have of conservative, Evangelical families. It's simply incorrect, as much as some readers of the P-I would like to smugly believe its truth.

Let me offer my own family as a contrast. We're a conservative family, though we don't perfectly fit the stereotype of social conservatives. My wife is more libertarian in legislating the behavior of others and regular readers are familiar with my own politics. Yet, we vote largely Republican, consider ourselves conservative, and attend an Evangelical church (non-stereotypical as it may be). Yet, I think we don't, uh, match Horsey's vision.

Perhaps this is just a personal gripe, but I consistently find the picture painted in many corners of the media to be painfully inaccurate in understanding who conservatives are, let alone why they believe what they believe. I don't believe all Democrats are birkenstock-wearing, vegetarian-eating, transit-riding, hemp-loving peacenicks. Such an assumption would be obnoxious, in addition to being incorrect. It would seem fair if more members of the media could avoid the reverse of such false stereotypes for the other side of the political spectrum.

Footnote: Long-time readers will recognize the link to my family picture comes from an alum of Sound Politics, Tim Goddard, who now has his own company in the wake of his work on Mike McGavick's campaign.

1. Eric, just remember people mock what they do not understand.

2. Don't you get it? They HATE conservatives.

3. Eric--
I thought Horsey was portraying our CHERUBIC troll ivan weiss.

Mr weiss is the porker on the LEFT.

4. The two adults don't look like conservatives to me. They look more like Mr & Mrs Nickels after some weight loss.

5. Wow, Ivan Weiss is a real whopper.
I cannot make up my mind if Ivan Weiss is past Manatee or if Ivan Weiss is one of those Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade balloons you need to tie 4 heavy ropes to to prevent him from floating awaaaaaaaaay.
Is Ivan Weiss a Democrat?
I thought only Republicans were fat, white males?

6. Hey, I think the cartoon was very revealing. It indicates that the conservative family is a "unit" as opposed to a single parent family. It portrays folks who obviously work and earn enough to eat well. And finally, it indicates that the R's are procreating, which is more than the Dims are doing! If the Dims are not careful, they will become extinct.

7. People of faith are similarly portrayed as ignorant bigots that are the true terrorists of the society. Secular progressives are particularly terrified of Christians. I went to the symphony the other evening and one of the pieces was by Dimitri Shostokovich. His work was suppressed by Stalin.
Totalitarians of any stripe, both right and left,
mock and ridicule what they don't understand and can't suppress. Franco, Stalin, secular progressives and the extreme of the right and left are all of the same cloth.

8. That's the problem with racism, which the left loves so much.

Stereotypes are rarely true. Case in point, I'm 6' 0", 155 lbs, and my wife is equally healthy in her BMI. Even though brought up Catholic, I don't regularly practice religion and prefer to rely on the reality of what is obviously right and wrong. The list goes on. I vote mostly conservative, because I believe that the individual should have first crack at his own destiny. And I don't believe collectives of do gooders do anything good. History continually proves that out.

Meanwhile, take a look at Ivan Weiss, he might have been the model posing for Horsey's cartoon.

9. Jeff B:

Are you trying to tell people you are in dire need of a big mac?

10. Horsey is a first class bigot who relies on the most offensive of stereotypes to communicate his simplistic and juvenile "observations". His method of rendering (I hate to call it a "sytle" because it lacks any) was very popular in the 50s and has been passed over by most better cartoonists, in their teenage years , on their way to something more original and artistic. His is an unimaginative rendering that is anal in it's hyper control of line and is more akin to a 1960s quickie sign painting style than anything else.

Other than that he does great stuff.

Yes, he's won awards. But liberals giving liberals awards stopped impressing me years ago. Hey, speaking of that, how is Al Gore's Nobel coming?

12. cartoons are never portraits - pay no heed if it doesn't not send you a message

I like the nose picker little boy

the rest is second rate

And Eric, you and your wife are both very attractive, and the kids look like two happy lambs. Nice family, congrats. A lifetime of pleasure and good relationships, let's hope.

13. Mr. Earling's commentary contains a very revealing (and I am sure unintentional) observation about the media.

He says "I consistently find the picture painted in many corners of the media to be painfully inaccurate in understanding who conservatives are.."

It would be very interesting if he would provide 3 or 4 specific citations to articles that have painted this "picture". I don't see it in the NY Times, for expl, which I read regularly. I cannot address whether or how TV "news" does it, since I don't watch TV news.

14. disdain for conservatives is expected. he makes a living criticizing & destructing--not constructing. go back in history & analyze his Dem/liberal portrayals. are they equally (lib term) "mean spirited?"

like Hollywood actors, his credibility is the same. a Barnum & Bailey clown--no more, no less. so--why fret over his opinion?

editorial cartoonists are glorified graffitti artists. pot shots & scribblings are easy. solving real problems in society is not.

15. Well, cut Horsey a bit of a break here. He couldn't very well portray the typical liberal "family". Most newspapers won't print pictures of people engaging in sodomy.

(Hey, if egregious generalizations are okay for the libs, why not turnabout is fair play?)

16. Whine whine whine...conservatives are stereotyped in Cartoons. Have you looked at Mallard Fillmore recently? If the comic writer was actually funny you might get a better conservative viewpoint in the PI complete with fat liberals.

17. I'm sorry but this cartoon is dead on.

Don't tell me these people don't look like every other family living up on Kent West Hill and going to Mariners games.

Sheesh, maybe you rarified Conservatives living in the Eastside should get out and mingle more!
