State amphibian

The Senate just passed HB 1069 "Designating the Pacific chorus frog as the state amphibian".

At least it's better that they spend some of their time on frivolous nonsense legislation than spend more of it on really harmful nonsense legislation.

1. Thank God. I don't know how we survived 118 years without a state amphibian. I'll be able to sleep soundly now.

2. Brekekekex, ko-ax, ko-ax!

I'm sorry, that's a Greek chorus frog.

3. First, let me agree with Stefan that it is better for this legislature to spend its time on this and similar matters, than on more important things.

But, if like me your curiosity is insatiable, then you may want to know more about the Pacific chorus frog (Pseudacris regilla).  Here's a set of pictures and here's a brief description. I must say it looks and sounds like a very ordinary frog, but perhaps I have missed something.

4. I'm a big fan of frogs. They eat alot of insects that I abhor, and make a nice soothing sound outside when I'm going to sleep at night. Now if I can just get rid of those squirrels - dang varmints!

At least the legislature got this state amphibian thing out the way fairly quickly, unlike the fight over the state vegetable.

6. No wonder the Dem controlled legislature honored this particular amphibian. This frog has attributes similar to many liberals:

"Behavior: This frog is chiefly nocturnal, spending the day beneath logs, rocks, or other debris."

7. While they're at it, how 'bout the moonbat as the state rodent?

It simply works on so many levels...

8. I wonder if they were lobbied by the
"Bud - Wi - Ser" frogs?

9. Likely brought to their attention by 4th graders studying the way the Govt. works. That's usually the way these things happen. I think Stefan is against children understanding Govt.

10. At least, the state had to do something to stop Geico from making a gecko the state amphibian. Sheesh...

I think that's how the state vegetable bill came about. And then what ensued was a fight over it from the potato and onion coalitions. Then to resolve the conflict, they had to give both the onion and the potato(e) some official designation. The lesson learned? If you have enough special interest money to lobby the legislature, you can buy legislation.

Unfortunately, the salamander doesn't have their very own special interest lobby to the legislature, so they lost out.

14. I say kill two birds with one stone and designate the Pacific Chorus Frog as state amphibian AND Poet Laureate. Could be interesting.

15. Michele, I'm down with that, as long as the Seattle Mens Chorus is somehow involved.

16. You were silent when the republican led majority did this.

What a total hypocrite.

17. Heh! It could happen. Amphibious Poet Laureate. Here is a poem my son wrote, which seems to fit the occasion:

Oad by a Toad

This odious ode
Was wrote by a toad
And toads cant rite
So there poetry bites

* Frogs, however, are erudite, and hold the literature of toads in deepest disdain. Salamanders are likewise contemptuous.
