State Representative John Lovick (D-44th) admits to David Postman he's thinking about a run for Snohomish County Sheriff. Lovick is playing coy.
Word on the street for months has been that he's going to run. Anyone who saw his TV ads during last year's legislative race got the hint. In an uncompetitive contest, Lovick spent money on cable TV ads talking about him and his attachment to the community. They didn't say a thing about issues before the state Legislature and barely indicated what position he was running for at all last year. He's running for Sheriff.
Officially in the race thus far are Tom Greene, who I've endorsed, and Rob Beidler. More on the battle to replace the term-limited Rick Bart to come.
Posted by Eric Earling at April 23, 2007 07:53 AM | Email ThisThis is the guy that stood up at Rob McKenna's Public Disclosure meet in Everett a couple of years ago, and said he spends 80 cents per page to fulfill public records requests and can only charge 25 cents.
First, if Greene is no more of a fiscal manager that he can't make a copy for less that 80 cents, and even less than 25 cents, I don't want him.
Second, I would hate to lose Lovick as my rep (not because of politics, but power) but he would be a great sheriff, a calm, reasonable guy, who knows how to get stuff done.
My 2 cents, value all advice at cost, and your mileage may vary.
The Geez
Posted by: The Geezer on April 23, 2007 10:54 AMGeez - I suspect that .80 figure includes calculating staff time expended on a per page basis. Staff man-hours are usually the primary cost driver of meeting any FOIA request.
Posted by: Eric Earling on April 23, 2007 05:48 PMCan we get someone who doesn't pander to the lowest common dollar figure of special interests?
Bart spent every spring going after "the worst of the worst" deadbeat dads but not once did a lick for enforcing violations of parenting plans.
No tears shed here when he dies of cancer of the crotch from holding that radar gun.
Posted by: Andy on April 23, 2007 08:50 PMThe Geezer has absolutely no clue what he is talking about. Talk about grasping at straws, complaining about Greene because of fiscal reality! In fact, Greene has been the glue holding the Sheriff's Department together for years now, doing everything possible to hold that department together in the face of cuts from the Executive.
He may be a calm and reasonable guy who knows how to get stuff done. I've heard nothing but positive things about his demeanor and personality. And I have no reason to question his ability to get things done.
But I have every reason to question his competency as County Sheriff.
Tom Greene, I do know personally. I've had the opportunity to get to know him over the past year or so, and I see him in many different venues, including my own home twice.
I have nothing but the utmost respect for Greene, and would place his demeanor and integrity alongside anyone's.
And he is, quite simply, by none, the most capable and competent person in all of Snohomish County for the position of Sheriff. That includes the current sheriff. I don't say that to disrespect Rick Bart; I only say that it is difficult to imagine a more qualified candidate than Tom Greene. And if one did exist, it certainly would not be John Lovick, who is not even qualified to be a Town Police Chief, let alone a County Sheriff.
And I don't mean to insult Lovick, either. This isn't personal. He simply doesn't have any serious qualifications for this job.
Beidler is a super guy and will no doubt make a great Sheriff in about 12 years or so. He simply does not have the experience or background to do it now.
Tom Greene? Go read his bio on his website at www.tomgreeneforsheriff.org. It will shock you the HUGE background Tom has.
Now I ask you, if you were hiring someone for a job would you not choose the most qualified applicant? I am going to, that is why I choose Tom Greene. $.80 per page? Is that a sensible reason to choose not vote for someone? I was at that meeting and Tom explained the reason for it rather elequently, but then he understands budgets since he has managed SCSO's for the past 10 years.
I for one am glad this is a non-partisan position because it takes politics out of the equation and Tom is not seeking a step towards a political future, and in fact if he lacks anything it is that of being a politician.
