(The headline should of course read "Mrs. Gregoire Signs Union Bail-Out Bill", but I started out with a typo and thought I'd keep it)
The EFF has the story: "Gregoire "preserves union power" at the expense of teachers and voters; signs union "bail-out" bill into law "

Posted by: Hinton on May 11, 2007 12:47 PMGregoire should know that this ain't an 'election challenge'. It will be decided by law and she is on the wrong side as she frequently was when she was AG and Ecology director and fighting the sick fight with Washington Supremes.
Posted by: swatter on May 11, 2007 01:00 PMI will still have to pay 80% "fair share" dues (now some money will be going to candidates I despise). But maybe I will get some money back retro-actively when this is declared unconstitutional.
Posted by: ajday on May 11, 2007 03:34 PMI am very hopeful the the US Supreme Court will see this for what it is & slap her down along with the Legislature that passed this piece of junk law. They all deserve it for trying to do an end run around the court.
And that Rep. Prentice (?) who said the unions needed to be kept strong should have her mouth washed out with soap. The unions are way too strong in this state, as it is. I keep hoping that somehow, someway this will become a Right to Work state, but am not holding my breath.
Posted by: CleanHouse on May 11, 2007 11:09 PMBut if $59,000 a year laborors use the same techniques, they are condemned as Commies.
It's time people see Labor as a Business. It will use the same techniques as Microsoft and GM.
If you want to outlaw collusion, then apply the law fairly.
Posted by: John Bailo on May 12, 2007 10:31 AMwhat is the purpose of the "prevailing wage". Is goverment contract jobs that "important" that we must pay the workers more, thus increasing the cost of the project, us taxpayers pay for also?
Posted by: Chris on May 12, 2007 11:24 AMUnions are slavery/organized crime. They are also monopolistic. It is time to abolish unions. If workers want to join an organization to represent them, let them do it on their own free will without forcing others into the corrupt organization against their will. Also have competition among the organizations. Forcing people into slavery, er unionism is wrong and needs to stop.
Posted by: AP on May 12, 2007 11:35 AMMonopoly? Let's see here . . .
1. Exclusive control by one group of the means of producing or selling a commodity or service.
2. Law. A right granted by a government giving exclusive control over a specified commercial activity to a single party.
Hmmm . . . let's count. Linux, Unix, three or four or five (at least) flavors of WYSIWYG desktop for each of those including a Windows interpreter (most of these are free by-the-way). Switching to the other hand: Mac's OS X, Lindows and Mac's Windows emulation. How does that make a monopoly? Because the press, who wouldn't understand a monopoly if it bit them in the a** said so doesn't make it so Johnny. Because a passel of politicians got mondo $$$$ from 3 of Microsoft's biggest competitors to "investigate" MS doesn't make it a monopoly either. Neither does seeing it written on a Mac blog. You sir, are free to put whatever operating system or productivity software on your machine that you desire. Who's stopping you? It sure isn't Microsoft.
Now, go back and read definition #2. Now that you were right about. Unions are a monopoly and, since joining the Demorat party over 50 years ago, have single handedly wiped out big American steel as well as the jobs and towns that relied on them. They are now working on (and damn near complete I might add) the American auto manufacturers. They killed public schools completely a few years ago and have hugely increased the cost of government with unsustainable over-the-top wage, retirement and medical packages. That's one a hell of a track record! I bet you're just proud as punch!
May I suggest "Basic Economics: A Citizens Guide to the Economy" and "Applied Economics: Thinking Beyond Stage One"? Both are by Thomas Sowell. Both are available on Amazon. Trust me buddy, you need the help.
