"$100 million jobs fund was mistake..."

The headline tells the tale, but you can read the details here.

2. I love this section (copied below) from the story about Gregoire "having doubts"! Sure, as soon as there are questions or a bill turns out to be a total waste of taxpayer money...now she says that she "had doubts". So why did you sign it, lady?! That's the job of the governor...to assess the validity of legislation and veto it if it's a waste...you know, make tough decisions-be a leader! I'm sick and tired of hearing her jump in and start making excuses after something fails!

Sen. Jim Kastama, chairman of the Senate Economic Development, Trade & Management Committee, wasn't involved in creating the program but sent a letter to Gregoire earlier this month asking her to veto its funding.

"The [projects] I saw, that were not worthy, justified just stopping the program and re-evaluating it," said Kastama, D-Puyallup.

Gregoire had her doubts, too.

Certain projects deserved the money, she thought, like a $471,000 grant to the Port of Ephrata that allowed a wind-turbine manufacturer in Grant County to expand -- keeping 110 family-wage jobs in the community.

But she had serious reservations about signing off on money for projects such as the Cabela's in Lacey. In the end, the governor said, she held her nose and signed the bill anyway.

3. And the Queen, "plugged her nose" but signed it anyway. That phrase rankles me when done by politicians to pander to the people who don't like the bill, which seems to be quite a few Democrats. Liberal and Communist party types, also.

You notice the local elections coming up? The candidates (and the ones I follow I like whether I agree or not) are all for this and that. They are for that project or that project. I would like one of them to stand up and say they are FOR THE TAXPAYER. Then, they can say, government is now rolling in the dough. We can either give some of it back, or we should save it for expected downtimes.

But, no, all we get his rhetoric.

5. I've been waiting for that Costco in Covington for years. Still nowehere in sight, no thanks to this bill. I heard there was a private landowner who was holding out, preventing the construction. Don't know how much money that project received from this bill, if any, but I'm sure Costco would have built its store there without it. There's no Costco anywhere close to the east Renton/Maple Valley/Covington/KC unincorporated area. IF it ever opens, it will be packed.

6. Again...there are reasons the public schools don't teach economics (or call for accountability)...case in point.

The only thing even close to being surprising is that some Dems are critical of the thinking behind the origination of the funding. But do you really read any call for accountability in their comments?

It's the same class of "thinking"...and the expressions of regret or dismay don't ever call for challenging the underlying assumptions or habitual mechanisms for addressing perceived "problems." The probability of working or not is never one of the decision making criteria.

7. Oh, brother! These dems have NO CLUE. Want more good jobs?? Then stop hitting small business hard with unfair, high B&O tax. Especially service category. It is being ripped off above and beyond anything remotely fair. And there are good jobs there, too.

Get rid of "the fund" and just start making the atmosphere better for employers in general by requiring less punitive taxation by the state. Encourage a spirit of growth, instead of heavy hitting on taxes with no thank you to all these small busiesses whatsoever.

Please can we have some people down in Oly who GET THIS? Dino, get on over here and set these people straight. Dino does get it. I do, and so do a lot of other people who unfortunately aren't in Olympia right now.

9. If only our President were as willing to occasionally admit he'd made a mistake...

10. Bruce

She didn't admit to anything. She said she signed it "anyway". That is admitting that she didn't like it, but she didn't have the guts to veto it . alot different than GWB. He will use that Pen.

If she didn't like it, she could have pulled the funding, she didn't.

She could call it an emergency, and take it back though. that is business as usual for the Ole Gov.

11. Heh how much more of the woman's lunacy can we afford.

Now they want 21 Billion for Unsound Transit, Plus umteen Billions for roads which will never get built, and Nationally they are tryng to roll back the tax cuts that saved our family's $2500 each on average.

They need a mascot like PacMan eating all those dollars without belching.

You'll gladly pay them on Tuesday says Popeye!
