Bobbe Bridge resigns

State Supreme Court Justice Bobbe Bridge announced today that she'll retire at the end of the year.

Bridge is one of the more reliably liberal and statist justices. She is perhaps best known for her 2003 DUI arrest. In our (unscientific) reader poll last fall she was voted 2nd least favorite justice (after Susan Owens). But the timing of her departure is a mixed blessing. Mrs. Gregoire gets to appoint a successor to serve the remaining year of Bridge's term. And in 2008 Gregoire's pick will be able to run for election as the "incumbent".

1.
Perfect timing -- fresh batches of released felons can now vie for the Liboire judgeship.

2. Mrs. Gregoire could appoint Bob Ferguson to the supreme court, because he should be able to get his law license back by the end of the year, even though the end of next week is highly doubtful for the prosecutor race.

4. My money's on her appointing someone who will agree to not run in '08 (perhaps bring a retired justice out of retirement), then run for the position herself.

5. @2 - great guess.

Maybe she'd appoint someone like Judge Cox.

6. This stinks. Bobbe had no chance of winning reelection. And she knew it. But she and her liberal friends couldn't abide the thought of an open seat--and the risk of a conservative like Jim Johnson winning an truly contested election. So she steps aside now, lets Gregoire install a reliably liberal goon, and the goon will get all the advantages of incumbency. And we saw what those advantages did for the hopelessly unqualified Susan Owens last year.

The lefist establishment in this state will game the system any way they can. They have utter contempt for democracy.

8. How about Attila the Hun? Or Taxus the Maximus?

Both would be in her circle of friends.

I did miss Pac Man, who is gobbling up everything his mouth can touch.

9. Well as long as we are speculating, how about hitting all of the core support groups in one swipe. Doesn't anyone out there know of any Gay/ Lesbian / Transgendered Native American Trial Lawyers with a lobbying back ground that could be appointed? And yes you can throw in a criminal record as long as it was sealed or expunged. How hard could it be?

10. no tears here. thanks for your public service, but good riddance.

sadly, she was the epitomy for slap on wrist uneven justice. average Joe would have been sent to Devil's Island for same...and still been there to date.

gee--wonder what that skimpy retirement pension will be? she can sell pearls in hubby's jewel shops.

Gary F. Locke never let his license lapse. Greggie could appoint him.

14. #4:

Gosh, by coincidence the infamous Mike Nifong got his District Attorney job in Durham by accepting a temporary appointment and promising not to run at the next election.

Funny that, being an extra-ethical Democrat, he abandoned the promise when he discovered he could run on the ultra-PC grounds of contrived indictments against three white males from a sports team, supported by a hysterical press and a corrupt City government. And so he ran, and won.

What's to keep a loyal King County Democrat from repeating this proven maneuver? Acorn and Indymedia would love it.

15. OK-this is off topic but over at justoneminute.typepad.com is a post by Tom Maguire refering to Jay Inslee and his involvement in the Valerie Plame fandango. It is worth a look folks and there are some mighty bright folks posting there.

16. Bobbe Bridge was a King County Superior Court Judge for the last two years of Gary Little's reign of many years of physically and sexually abusing little boys. I hope she does more to protect children in the justice system than she did in the late '80s. She had to know of the abuse; everyone within the King County Court House knew.

17. Maybe the BIAW can blow a few million more on this race.

Posted by: Giffy on June 1, 2007 11:39 PM
18. This will be an excellent race for John Groen in 2008. And he has lots of his yard signs left over from 2006 that his supporters recovered and can be used again. Seriously, Groen did very well against a strong popular long-term incumbent, and stands a great chance of beating a recently appointed person. The BIAW's money would be well spent in this race.

20. Richard, he outspent him 5 to one and lost by 10 points. thats hardly doing "very well".

Posted by: Giffy on June 2, 2007 07:23 AM
21. Richard is absolutely right. Groen did very well for a virtual unknown who was unfairly harmed by the public perception that he was linked to PAC ads. Now that he's known, and he and the PACs are smarter, and he will be running against a (hopefully) much less popular candidate ... he has a great chance.

22. I'll 2nd (3rd, I guess) what Richard said about John Groen: He would be a great addition to the High Court; and I agree he should have a better shot this time. Remember that Justice Johnson didn't make it the 1st time either.

23. woo-hoo ! the drunk is going to be gone. Don't count on the Gov. to select anyone that much better though.
