I-25: Accountable elections are only a few thousand dollars away

An update to last Friday's post where I mentioned that the I-25 campaign needed to raise the last $20,000 by today to finish gathering signatures. (The goal is really only $15,000, as I've pledged the last $5,000)

The campaign tells me that it's making steady progress toward the goal. And thanks to all the generous Sound Politics readers who made a good portion of the recent donations!

But we're not there yet, and if the rest of the money doesn't come in, then the initiative dies, as does any hope for fair and accountable elections in King County for years to come.

If you've already donated, or gathered signatures, or raised money from others, then thank you! If the recent corruption and mismanagement in King County Elections upsets you, but you haven't contributed yet, now's the time to step up.

Fair elections aren't free, but they're a better deal than the alternative. Donate by paypal or check -- before it's too late.

2. Stefan said, "if the rest of the money doesn't come in, then the initiative dies"

How do you figure that? Again, the initiative is either worthy or it is not. This, "the initiative dies unless people fork over $15,000" is a crock.

3. No, Daniel, it is not a crock. I-25 has a firm deadline of June 20 to turn in nearly 55,000 valid signatures. Like it or not, I-25, like nearly all initiative campaigns, is relying on paid signature gatherers for a large portion of its signatures. If the rest of the money doesn't materialize, then there won't be enough to pay for all of the needed signatures before the deadline. And the initiative dies.

5. And don't forget Daniel K, that we have to offset all those Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Daffy Duck, Clarabell Cow, Gladstone Gander and Uncle Scrooge signatures that have been flooding in as obvious invalids to frustrate this ship of fools.
