Mrs. Gregoire campaigns at taxpayer expense

Mrs. Gregoire is ratcheting up her re-election campaign -- at taxpayer expense:

Gregoire, who is expected to run for a second term next year, soon will embark on a six-city "listening tour," a reprise to her statewide series of community town halls last year.
...
Gregoire, assisted by independent pollster Stuart Elway, will barnstorm the state in October. Her cabinet will meet with local civic leaders, Elway will conduct focus groups to get a scientific sampling of voter concerns, and [Gregoire] will hold open-invitation community meetings.
...
Elway has a $100,000 contract to do focus groups with about 50 randomly selected voters in the towns the governor visits.

"We'll ask the citizens what they want from government and how they will know if government is delivering those things..." Elway said

One surmises that the Elway focus groups are less about discovering what citizens really want, and more about developing a strategy to best communicate a pre-determined agenda to targeted voters.

1. And I bet if a Republican ever got in, he'd do the same thing.

Don't you people ever tire of one sided attacks?

Got any actual issues worth raising here, or just more of the same, one sided ranting by sore losers whose own party said the election in 2004 was fair, yet they can not let it rest.

Good luck in 08, and if you win, I'm sure you'll apply absolutely the same standard of scrutiny to Rossi as you do now to Gregoire.

2. DaveD,

Your argument has no merit. Most liberals I know are totally and completely one-sided, and love to make love to themselves on how they are so correct and have all the solutions, while in the end they offer few and always do nothing constructive other than conservative-bash. If you truly believe that the Queen got in legitimately in 2004, then your lack of intelligence designates you not worth arguing with anyway. Next please....

3. I'm sure the Republican gubernatorial candidate will have access to this publicly funded survey?

Shouldn't the old girl have been doing this tour about twice a year for the last 4 years? But she hasn't, so I call it campaigning.

Posted by: swatter on September 26, 2007 12:18 PM
4. swatter: agreed.

It's not that this TYPE of thing is illegitimate, it's that it is so nakedly obvious that it is campaigning. Far moreso, incidentally, than anything Dino's done ...

5. As Governor one would hope that she can go out and listen to her constituents regardless of party affiliation.

I agree with you Swatter, but it's hardly news she's running for re-election. Hard to see why this is so shocking.

Posted by: Cato on September 26, 2007 01:07 PM
6. And if Rossi had been inaugurated in 2005 and he was out using taxpayer dollars to do reelection politicking and polling, I'm sure the Times and the PI would see nothing wrong with that either.

Yeah, right!

Posted by: MJC on September 26, 2007 01:18 PM
7. Morons. She represents the entire state, whether you like it or not. She is doing the state's business. If she wasn't doing it, you'd accuse her of being out of touch with her constituents.

The more you bash her, the more ridiculous you look, and the voters are catching wise. Your votes are counted, and you're not gaining any support.

Posted by: ivan on September 26, 2007 01:23 PM
8. Spot on Ivan. She has gained the confidence of the Washington voters and if Rossi decides to try and unseat her, he will (this time) be embarrassed. His shot has come and gone; he will no longer be a viable candidate.
Much like the popularity for Mrs Clinton has increased, so it has for our increasingly praised Governor.

9. The Gregoire Legacy: 1st Term

Year One:
Stole Election
Charged Fee to Visit State Parks

Year Two:
Did Nothing

Year Three:
Made comment on Viaduct. Retracted. Changed opinion. Then said let others decide.
Got rid of state parks fee.

Year Four:
Runs for re-election

11. Right on John B.
I might add, year 1,2,3, and 4, sucked as governor. Who want's 4 more years of suck? Liberals, such as can be found here..

12. Alright, somebody file an election complaint with whatever commission handles this sort of thing.

Posted by: Misty on September 26, 2007 01:46 PM
13. this is just SOOOO nakedly campaigning. Notice the article said they will sample VOTER concerns; not CITIZEN concerns. There IS a difference. My goodness; she's not even being the least bit subtle about this. I call foul. She's free to go on listening tours but her campaign should pay for this. totally.

14. I might add, year 1,2,3, and 4, sucked as governor.

And what would have Dino have accomplished in his 4 years that would have been so great?

Rossi would either stick to his guns and be a lousy Governor or he'd have to sell out his ideals in order to work with the super-majority of Dem's that control the state legislature. Either way it's would be a win-win for the Dem's.

Posted by: Cato on September 26, 2007 02:29 PM
15. Cato, I am surprised. You must be tired. I thought you would nitpick megabrads comment on how bad the governor did in the 4th year that is next year.

And ole duffer, we will see. We will see. They both have one year to get their shriek aka a laugh down.

Posted by: swatter on September 26, 2007 02:39 PM
16. I thought you would nitpick megabrads comment on how bad the governor did in the 4th year that is next year.

That would be too easy. I'd rather make MEGABRAD explain what Rossi would have done differently. Everyone here bitches about Gregoire, no one here has even pointed out what Rossi would have done differently especially when he faced an opposition controlled Legislature that would shut him down in a second should he try to pass a bill/budget they didn't agree with.

Posted by: Cato on September 26, 2007 03:23 PM
17. okay, but orbusmax just posted a link to a Seattle Times blogger who takes exception to Gregoire's non-candidacy war chest of $3 million.

She says she won't announce because then everything she does in the legislature next year will be politicized. Can you believe it? A poor woman's Clinton. Totally unchallenged by the press- both of them and that includes are two existing non-Senators.

Posted by: swatter on September 26, 2007 04:12 PM
18. Governor Gregoire's listening tour is actually REQUIRED by the legislature. They passed a law, they appropriated money for it, take it out on them.

Posted by: GL on September 26, 2007 04:26 PM
19. Hey, "GL", your IP address tells me that you're posting from the Washington State Office of Financial Management.

Your comments here is warmly welcomed. But since you're commenting on public time on a topic relevant to your employer, it would be appropriate to identify yourself.

More importantly, please point us to the law that you're talking about.

20. Swatter @3:

Yes, the Republican candidate probably will have access to the results. And you too. If the opinion research is paid for by the state then it's public information. Just ask for it when the work is completed.

BTW, why does Stefan so sarcastically refer to Gregoire's '08 run as a re-election campaign? At least Rossi and the state Republicans got a full airing of their claims in court while Gore's claims following the 2000 elections were shut down by a summary judgment of the US Supreme Court.

21. opposition controlled Legislature that would shut him down in a second should he try to pass a bill/budget they didn't agree with.

Actually Cato, you've got it back-asswards. It's the executive that can 'shut down' the legislation passed by the Legislature. The governor can't pass any laws. But he/she can certainly veto those passed by the Leg.

Usually the governor's suggested budget in December is barely worth the paper it's written on.

And if the Legislature refused to pass the governor's request legislation ... and in turn the governor refused to sign any legislation passed by the opposition party ... well, I'd be happy with that.

22. Well Well, Queen Crissy the "never elected" guvernot is running around the state at the taxpayers "expense", The "elected" Governor Dino Rossi travels the state on "donated money" and some slob files a PDC complaint about it!(and we all know the PDC stands for "Peoples Democrat Party"! I hope some one in the state GOP party with a set of B---S, (if there is ONE), will file a PDC complaint requesting an investigation on Queen Crissy and her $120,000 tax payer funded campaing trip, and requiring the demorats to pay for her campaign trips. One saving grace is she willn't spend a lot on fuel for her trip but I bet she burns up her broom!!

23. It's not like Bill Laborde ever contributes to the Governors campaigns or gets any State funding for his organization is it?

Posted by: Smokie on September 26, 2007 08:50 PM
24. I'm sure this is an emergency, like the 250 emergency bills she signed.

Not only is she going to use 120k of our hard earned money to campaign, and she also wants to use more of our hard earned money to sue the Federal government, if Bush veto's the massive and I do mean massive new democraps tax on tabacco products.

This withch should work in the private sector for a while to learn that money like she spends doesn't grow on trees.

25. I plan on going to the Aberdeen "town hall meeting" http://www.governor.wa.gov/townhall/graysharbor/default.asp
and will ask;

"Given the controversy in the last election regarding the re and the re-recount what steps have you take (Crissie) to make sure voting is not only uniform but legitimate?"

Without legitimate voting how can we vote out the people we do not want?

Re-elect Dino 2008!

"Relect Rossi in 2008"

27. Let's see. We elected the Governor. The Governor as part of her work seeks to interact with the populace. As Governor we pay her salary, as we do for all elected officials. Given that Congressman Reichert spent over $500,000 sending out franked mailings that are a one way street means of communication, the Governor's face to face approach is a bargain in comparison.

Posted by: Daniel K on September 26, 2007 10:54 PM

30. The bottom line the Queen has been irresponsible with the state budget. She has increased the budget spending at a higher rate than we have seen in the past two decades. Left billions of unfunded retirement money/health care for the future to pay. Here we had a big surplus and she signed bills to add new programs not fix one of the biggest problems in unfunded liabilities for the future. ON purpose I bet. Make the budget requires a State Income tax. Not only that we have billions of dollars of Road repairs needed. Not a dime of the surplus to help pay for the decade or more of transportation needs for the state. But the special Interests have gotten a lot of payoffs at our expense.
At least Dino has proven that he can balance a budget and make hard choices. Something the Queen can not do.

Posted by: david anfinrud on September 27, 2007 06:44 AM
31. Cato has challenged Rossi supporters to assess what Dino would have done differently, had he not been cheated out of the governorship. Of course no one could actually know for certain what actions Dino would have undertaken as governor, but we do know his direction and leadership would have been drastically different than the queen's.

I'll start by stating that Governor Rossi would never have forced all Washington State employees to pay dues to unions they do not support, under threat of termination of employment.

Next......

32. Bill L., are you ever going to get over Gore? Gore is bad for the environment; he is playing you like a fiddle and making millions on your passion. You have to realize that Gore does not share your passion for the environment; his passion is the almighty dollar you so hate the Rs for (and truth be told- Ds have more millionaires than Ds).

Daniel, what is your fascination with Darcy Burner? If she were a man, I'd call her an empty suit. There is nothing there.

Daniel, apparently you didn't read the postman article I referred to. He challenged the duplicity of Gregoire having a $3 million campaign chest, but she is not a candidate because she would appear partisan if she announced. Absolute ridiculous and even you can admit that.

Posted by: swatter on September 27, 2007 07:20 AM
33. If it looks, walks, and talks like a campaign, it is a campaign. And by the way, the money she is spending for her un-campaign are taxpayer dollars, which means some of them are MINE. And I did not vote for her, nor will I vote for her. Otherwise, I would have privately contributed to her campaign. My tax dollars are NOT her campaign dollars.

Posted by: katomar on September 27, 2007 09:48 AM
34. I love that the left is so confident Dino will lose in 2008, should he run. They were confident in 2004 he had no chance, too. I was new to WA and was convinced he had a great chance, and was told no, I just don't understand WA. On the contrary: they didn't understand anything outside of King County.

More of the same, except this time, more people are going to be even more angry at the Dems. They don't feel it in KC, but it is palpable everywhere else.

Posted by: pudge on September 27, 2007 10:21 AM
35. Alternative headline:

Mrs. Gregoire governs at the expense of taxpayers

How much have taxes increased?

How large has the budget grown?

High much of an increase has there been in fees?

How many people lost their government jobs for not wanting to join a Union?

How many laws did she sign that implemented programs but failed to provide funding?

She's just too expensive to keep around.

Posted by: pudge on September 27, 2007 02:27 PM
37. ...was that 50 ranomly selected illegal aliens with voter cards and WA drivers licenses? after all, THEIR needs outweigh OUR legal citizen rights; can you say "hard workers" and "uniting families" in the same sentence as "trespassers?"

38. #7 Ivan says "your votes were counted".
-----------------------------
No one says Rossi's votes were not counted. It is the Gregoire non-votes that were counted that were the problem. Maybe the Dem posters here are confident of victory next time because they know they can generate as many fake Gregoire votes as they need no matter how many real voters vote for Rossi.

Posted by: KW64 on September 28, 2007 09:45 PM
39. KW64: in fact, some legal votes for Rossi were NOT counted, including Bryan Suits.

But whatever. Rossi was in a statistical dead heat with Gregoire in 2004 (and arguably had more legal votes), and he has only grown in popularity since, while Gregoire has been amassing a terrible record of massively increasing spending, fighting against improving our sex offender laws, and more.

If Rossi runs a decent campaign, he will win (again ;-).
