Posted by: Army Medic/Vet on October 3, 2007 12:05 PMWe own our own lives, not the state. The nanny state has no right to step in and tell us we can't kill ourselves, nor to prosecute others from helping us kill ourselves. Dr. Kevorkian should never have been imprisoned.
The state exists to defend individual rights, and to prevent others from harming our rights. It may not protect us from ourselves. In doing so, it creates victimless crimes, which are absurd.
My first wife died of cancer about two years ago. She chose to hang on to the bitter end, and I watched her suffer. This was her choice to make. But others might not want to go through that kind of hell, and the state does wrong when it tries to force us to do what some "expert" thinks is in our own interest.
80% of Oregon's assisted suicides were cancer patients. The state, and the meddling religious do-gooders who lobby against assisted suicide should mind their own business and leave suffering and dying people the hell alone.
