What is this Sound Thinking With Which You Speak?

Jonathan Martin over at the Politico makes a point today about John McCain wish more journalists would grasp: immigration, not the Iraq war, was the cause of McCain's campaign implosion last summer. Well, that and the poor fundraising coupled with dramatic overspending.

I lamented the same false "McCain is sinking because of Iraq" talk last July, specifically coming from an editorial in the P-I.

Kudos to Martin for getting it right.

1. I wonder how many of the conservatives that were so upset this past summer and said things such as, "we must not vote for any of the congressmen that support this immigration bill ever again. Only then will they learn how serious we the american people are about immigration!" are now supporting McCain.

Oh that is right he SAYS he learned his lesson on that one! Haha...

2. Well, Lysander, this one isn't.

3. McCain had the immigration deal right. The only way we are going to be able to fund entitlements for our aging population is by importing more young workers. We need to VASTLY increase immigration quotas. Yes, that will mean wage deflation for some workers, but that is going to be much less bitter pill to swallow than the alternatives. Tax increases, benefit decreases, or both.

And if you have to bring in lots of new workers, it makes sense to have them be grateful to republicans rather than democrats.

The whole wall thing is stupid. Prohibition never works. Smugglers always find a way around walls. You have to take away the economic incentives, and use the pressure of willing workers to the country's advantage.

4. This one ain't either, L. It's kinda like the situation we have with Baird down here in the 3rd.

Left wing wackos around here blew a gasket when Baird reversed his position on the surge. Like you, they didn't give a damn that Baird was correct. Man, they jumped up and down like the whiny little punks they are when that happened.

Haven't heard a hell of a lot out of those scumbags lately, though.... I wonder why that is?

That said, assuming Baird runs for re-election (BIG rumors going around that he won't) the sheeple of the left will line up and vote for him just like they always do.

Here in Washington, it's quite a bit easier for those of us opposed to McCain to stay home. After all, McCain has about as much chance of winning this state as Lysander does of posting without exhibiting BDS.

McCain blowing it on immigration may cost him the election, or it may not. But if he wins, it's going to be without my vote in the primary or the general.

Of course, the McCain implosion was fueled by his stupidity on immigration. With the success of the surge, a success he and anyone not infected by the leftist surrender virus could foresee, the war has suddenly been shoved to the back burner as all that faux whaling and gnashing of teeth by the fringe left nutbergers is forgotten.

That, of course, is why the left wants us to lose so badly, to fail so badly over there... for the political advantage the spilling of American blood would gain them.

5. Hinton: If McCain was right about immigration, it makes you wonder what type of politician he is to now say that he was wrong and promises to change his position on immigration.

6. Yeah, he's lost my support also...it's Mrs Clinton for me - all the way! :)

7. Why is anyone hand wringing over the details of McCain's nomination campaign anymore?

As long as McC maintains his 100 year Iraq war position he will not become president.

Since the presidency is his sole reason to live, he will adjust his sails on the war AND immigration.

Then I'll vote for him even though I won't just need a clothes pin for my nose.

I'll need a C-Clamp in order to tolerate his ignorance on climate policy.

8. If you listen closely to the Double Talk Express, he hasn't actually changed his real position on mass amnesty at all. He simply acknowledged, in retrospect, that McCain-Kennedy had not been the right way to approach it politically (as evidenced by the fact that it went down in flames and dropped him in the polls). He has also said recently that if McCain-Kennedy landed on his desk in the form it was in last summer, he'd sign it... that's not exactly changing his position.

9. Neither my wife nor I are voting for McCain today and will not in November, the greatest reason being his immigration stance. Arizona, his home state, is awash in illegals but the senator persists in his quest for amnesty.

And Hairy Buddah @ 3: The key word in your post is "worker". I agree we need more workers, but those workers must enter the country and reside here legally. Too many of the present illegals are here for other than work. They are here for "free stuff" and criminal activity. We need to be selective as to who is allowed entrance and by what terms they are allowed to reside here. We need professionals, skilled tradesmen and experienced technicians, not gardeners and hotel maids. And we need to recruit them from around the world, not just Latin America. Our southerm border must be closed, and NOW is too late!
