A Case Study in Going Off-Message

The more I think about it, the more I think Phil Gramm's "whiners" comment is just about the dumbest thing a high-profile McCain adviser could have said on the issue of the economy. He may have in one fell swoop nixed his own chances at being in the Cabinet, should McCain win, and is likely to be a seriously diminished surrogate - at least for the time being.

Granted, it's not as bad as former Romney backer Doug Kmiec going off the reservation, making himself near persona non grata in some conservative circles, but the thought process involved - or lack thereof - is beyond mystifying.

1. It matters not. My wife and I were watching Brian Williams/NBC News last night and when they played clips of McCain speaking (or trying to) we both looked at each other, shook our heads and said 'no way'. His telegenic appeal is surpassed only by his youthful appearance. It just ain't gonna happen folks! :)

2. There are a lot of "whiners"; but they are not the working class...who are doing better than ever before. The whiners are the stock brokers, dow investors, arbitragers and a host of high fliers for whom the party has ground to a halt. These guys have gotten used to the brie being purchased without them doing so much as lifting a single finger...parking money in real estate or DOW stocks and letting it all happen for them.

Sorry losers, but you know what the future is: Hard Work. Yeah, that's right. This is a new age where the return might actually be dependent on the effort. That means doing a honest day's work for an honest day's pay.

3. I don't think you have to worry about what happens to Phil Gramm if McCain gets elected in November because McCain will not win in November. Sorry, but that's the way it is. All Obama has to do is hint that he's moving towards the middle, and he'll win ealsily in November.

Phil Gramm will probably hit the TV news circuit when Obama is in office to raise some bucks. Maybe he'll write a book or two. Then he'll just fade into history.

4. The problem here, Duffer, is that you have the political awareness of a board fence.

What you say and conclude is, of course, meaningless; it was said and concluded twice before (2000 and 2004, if memory serves) by many people far superior to you in political analysis and strategy.

It was you, was it not, who repeatedly (and rather stupidly, as it turns out) assured us that Hillbilly was getting the nomination?

I'm sure your prognostication now will be at least as accurate as your utter lack of insight and knowledge then.

As for who "wins," by November, Oliar will be sufficiently tied to yet another nightmarish Carter presidency that he should enjoy being what he is: an unindicted, empty-suited co-conspirator with Rezko.

Wright?

5. Politics (much like Religion) generate a lot of 'meaningless' remarks and opinions...and it's all 'relative'.

Posted by: Duffman on July 10, 2008 10:37 AM
6. Remember about 4 years ago when everyone was 100% sure that Bush was toast because Kerry was going to win convincingly?

I'm not saying McCain is going to win, but Saying that Obama has it sewn up is way too premature. Even with his early leard, his own strategists admit that he has an uphill battle in a few states he needs to win in order to take this.

7. I wonder if as much attention will be paid to Obama's inane statement that "we need somebody to solve the economy." Obama said that in response to Gramm's remarks.

Posted by: russell garrard on July 10, 2008 11:21 AM
8. No way does Obama have it sewn up. He is campaigning into a fierce headwind of the Military Industrial Complex, and the MSM they (own) control.

Every bumble McCain makes is pretty much ignored, and every action taken, or word spoken by Barack is gone over with a microscope the size of the Hubble Telescope.

The warmongers want McCain. There is $$$$ in war, and they will stop at nothing. Don't believe me? You can count the number of anti-war people interviewed by the MSM before the invasion of Iraq on one hand.

The MSM wants war.

War is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

As always, follow the money.....

9. were these comments made on Fox?...because the interview I saw had Phil Gramm expressly stating that he was answering on his own, not as part of the McCain campaign....

so calling people whiners is worse then threatening to chop somebody's nuts off?......well maybe in Barry's case....maybe he doesn't have any nuts...

Posted by: lee on July 10, 2008 12:04 PM
10. I just cannot understand why the whiners are so upset by this...{/sarcasm}

Posted by: Ragnar Danneskjold on July 10, 2008 12:09 PM
11. Rags, that was a low blow against Eric. Well deserved, though. But, to continue whining, McCain has the youthful Forbes, Kemp and Gramm. Yikes!!! Whether he likes it or not his VP has to have energy. Bob Dole anyone?

Posted by: swatter on July 10, 2008 12:35 PM
12. The "whiners" comment although true may be a little insensitive for some. The "I feel your pain" line always works much better during a campaign. I have always found the folksy Phil Gramm to be down to earth and found his comment entertaining. A dumbest comment would sound more like this. " You should make sure your children learn to speak Spanish" instead of whining about bilingual education in the schools. BHO, Powder Springs GA. 9 July 2008.

13. All Facts @ 8:
I think that I may be making a mistake here because at best you should be ignored but I have to ask: If the MSM wants war because war is $$$$$$$$$$$$$, how come in the midst of these present battles (Iraq and Afghanistan are battles in the larger war after all) is the MSM losing it's collective asses? They're losing readership/viewership by the truck load daily. Ad revenue is sinking. Consolidations and closings abound. Were is all of this war money you're talking about? Stuffed in their socks? How do anti-war people bring in $$$$$. What, are the commies and Marxists personally paying CNN, NBC, etc. by the appearance?

I'd address the Obama and MSM persecution of him but it's so far off base that I don't know where to start. Buddy, you have just GOT to get your head out of your keester. Or at least stop getting "All facts to support your position" from there.

14. The Reverend Wright "controversy" got more air time than all McCain's screw ups combined.

Sunni, Shia, Iraq, Iran, Insurgent, Al Qaeda, whatever. The bile rolls from McCain's lips, even outright lies. The MSM never once makes a point of the fact that he is lying (like saying Obama was not calling the Revolutionary Guard a terrorist organization yesterday) and on, and on.

McCain is a fraud. His flip flops are so numerous, and so monstrous, all the MSM can do is display Barack "refining" his basic opinion, and repeating the GOP claiming he is flip flopping when he isn't.

15. Gramm is right - this country has become a collection of feminized, bed wetting, whiny little crybabies that want the government to give them free stuff.

It would be refreshing if, for once, McCain would attack Obama instead of his supporters.

This is why McCain will lose.

16. Whenever I read a prediction from Duffman, I keep in mind his incessant harping on how the Hildabeast was going to be the next POTUS.

Nice call there, Duffman. How'd that work out for you?

Posted by: Obi-Wan on July 10, 2008 04:42 PM
17. Kato is right. I would love to see McCain have his ass handed to him attacking Obama 1 on 1.

Someone should tell McCain all those tired old talking points don't work on people with IQ's over 50 these days. Seems like most Americans know better than to believe anything coming out of a Republiconvict's lips. America isn't buying what they are selling......

Posted by: All Facts Support My Positions on July 10, 2008 04:43 PM
18. #17: In a 1 to 1 debate McCain would probably win. Obama is lost without a teleprompter. Ask him a tough question and he just stammers away...but then his supporters don't care about substance. Anyone who would support this empty suit probably isn't smart enough to fight their way out of a paper bag anyway.

20. "Obama is lost without a teleprompter. Ask him a tough question and he just stammers away...but then his supporters don't care about substance."

Kato's right. The video evidence of this can be found here at the press conference throwing Jeremiah Wright under the bus.
Starting at the 18 second point, please count how many 'uh's B-uh!rack Obam-uh! sputters before you want to scream "spit it out, idiot!". I watched this live and couldn't help but wonder how many times he uttered that unintelligent utterance during the full 25-30 minute speech. Uff da!

21. All Facts...I've never seen such postings that are the complete antithesis of your name.
This part..."all the MSM can do is display Barack "refining" his basic opinion" from #14 is Webster's definition of stupidity.
If he's refining his basic opinion, where was that filibuster he promised to unleash on the Homeland Security bill? Hmmmm?

Posted by: PC on July 10, 2008 06:40 PM
22. Wanna see someone lost without a teleprompter? Did you watch McCain yesterday responding to the Vietnam Vet that asked him why he voted against additional funding for the VA year after year after year.

McCain I guess forgets about things like VOTES FOR VETERANS....

Senator Graham just threw McCain under the bus. With friends like Graham (Mr. Enron Loophole) who needs enemies right?

23. #16 Didn't work out for me spot on, but it was close; possibly like some or at least may be a few of your carrier landings, eh? :) That's Okay Obi Wan, I'm still batting at least 300+ and that's much better than our former 1st baseman.
May I assume you're betting on Sir Dino?

Posted by: Duffman on July 10, 2008 07:19 PM
24. now we see why gramm flamed out in 1996. and if he'd only said it was the libr'l mee-dee-yuh who are the whiners, he'd have hit a home run. he's been in politics how long and he still can't get the R's number one talking point (blame the liberal media) right?

Posted by: Quincy on July 10, 2008 07:52 PM
25. Obama is a Big Fart in the wind.

I really got a kick outta watching Jesse Jackson going after Obama.

Ever seen two male AlPaca's fight?

Screaming and neck wrestling are behaviors alpaca males display when trying to establish dominance. They try to bite testicles and run at break-neck speeds around the pastures.

http://www.owning-alpaca.com/alpaca-males.html

What a hoot to watch these two tangle....Who will dominate the next mate.....eh eh eh

So you say Obama is like JFK... who is the next Marilyn Monroe

And which one - Jesse or Barack....will get lucky...

PS Watch out for Bill, he'll be lurking and hangin around for some of the fun...But hell he'd take a male AlPaca just for fun, as long as he had a good cigar handy

26. McCain was right to disparage Gramm's remark. He threw a barb at Obama and referred to him as Dr. No when it comes to increasing oil production in the US. Maybe this helped McCain recruit more conservatives, just as Jesse Hi-Jackson's "neutered' whisper about Obama on the hot mic may have help him get more votes from the anti- ambulence chaser voter block.

My prediction: Sir Dino will get more votes in this state than John McCain, who will get more votes than Sam Reed.

Posted by: KS on July 10, 2008 08:47 PM
27. Duffman, carrier pilots count traps, not bolters, so I could give an accurate count of the former, but not the latter. And carrier pilots only talk about the traps. BTW, my opinion of you is improving, you actually read and remember other people's posts.

I'm still batting at least 300+ And that is?

that's much better than our former 1st baseman. Glad to see him go, although, one can see why losers and non-performers like unions, one can completely fail to perform and still get paid.

May I assume you're betting on Sir Dino? No, you can't. I'm voting for Senator Rossi (a family friend), but not betting on his winning the election. King Ron County has had four years to refine its election fraud (took then two recounts to win in 2004), so I'm not holding my breath. Dino will get more valid votes again, but we'll have to wait and see who is declared the winner of the election.

28. Gramm's remarks weren't politically correct nor politically helpful in a presidential campaign, but that doesn't mean they weren't dead on the mark as well.

There is alot of 'whining' in today's society and especially amongst the younger set who think they're 'entitled' to a 75K job, Mgmnt position and a corner office upon completion of their Bachelor's degree at the University. Unhappy with life? just pop a pill...kid doesn't learn at school? no problem, we'll just diagnose it as ADHD...can't pay the ARM mortgage on that house you didn't need and can't afford? no problem, it's the bank's fault and the Government should bail you out. Is this a nation of "whiners"? You bet it is.

29. Thanks Obi Wan, I respect your opinion and your apparent character. I would be interested in any objective (or subjective if you in fact know him personally) remarks you might have about Sir Dino, if you'd care to opine.

30. Mental midget Sid said @ 30: "McCain spoke in front of a group of people whose(sic)had the slogan - 'For the race everything. For those outside the race, nothing.'"

Obama also spoke and actively pandered to this racist group. Video proof at this link: http://www.truveo.com/Barack-Obama-at-La-Raza-Conference/id/3835890446

If you're going to open your pie hole Sid, at least try to get some of your facts straight first.
