If you have not yet registered to vote in Washington, register today! Many other states also have a deadline of Friday or Saturday.
Also, if you're in Washington, sorry the Mariners are so terrible, but how about Tacoma native Jon Lester, huh? In the last year he's battled back from cancer, won the clinching game of the World Series, thrown a no-hitter, and even tossed a one-hit complete game shutout in Yankee Stadium. And last night, he became only the third Red Sox pitcher ever to win a playoff game with no earned runs or extra-base hits allowed (Burce Hurst and Babe Ruth are the others).
Go Sox!

Very bad for Gregoire since the Dems have had a huge bounce the past 2 weeks. And this is all the better she can do.
That said, Epstein did screw up when he made that Gagne deal. For a terrible half a season by Gagne, they gave up Gabbard, who has been only average for Texas, but also David Murphy, who has put up similar numbers to JD Drew at a tiny fraction of the cost of his $14 million salary.
Posted by: Palouse on October 3, 2008 12:34 PMAnd the swatter is usually the first to encourage everyone to register to vote and to vote. But, not this election.
Posted by: swatter on October 3, 2008 12:39 PMHistorical fact: Gagne was one of only TWO players to not return from the Sox World Series roster to the roster on Opening Day 2008, IIRC. I forget the other one. And people wonder how they made it back to the postseason ... :-)
You may enjoy this post I wrote four years ago.
Stark thinks it's a possibility Bay might be dealt in the off season, possibly for Matt Holiday. I don't really like that deal either, mainly for salary reasons.
Posted by: Palouse on October 3, 2008 01:00 PMI do like the Drew signing a lot more than that deal. Drew is a good player and good guy, and has had a nice season. Not worth what we paid maybe, but that's baseball.
Posted by: pudge on October 3, 2008 01:10 PMI don't know if Drew is a good guy, but I know Phillie fans don't agree.
Drew's been stealing money the past 3 years (not Carl Pavano level stealing, but still). He's been paid $35 million over that time for averaging around .275 and 17 HR.
Posted by: Palouse on October 3, 2008 01:21 PMIt's the dimbulbs on the left that often don't have a clue about how or where to register to vote. That's what all those get out the vote drives you see every election are about. They are desperate attempts to register the ignorant, the insane, and the terminaly stupid whom all reliably vote left if they can remember when they are supposed to vote and where. Thank heavens most of them never actually vote.
I'm just teasing. I'm pretty sure unregistered leftists don't come to this site. Not to worry.
Here's a true story though. I worked at a non-profit facility in Seattle's central area back during the 2004 election. I kid you not, people called up on election day asking "is this the poll?",(actually it sounded more like "is this the poe?"), but we would not want to be politically incorrect.
I'm a die-hard Red Sox fan too. I remember sitting in my little rented Bellingham room back in 1975 screaming at my dinky black and white TV while the Sox duked it out with the Reds.
Posted by: Bill Cruchon on October 3, 2008 03:19 PMI never saw it and can't confirm it but I used to hear this story of Howard Cosell interviewing Gaylord Perry who was often accused of throwing a spitball: It may not have ever happened but it does remind me of the way the media treats Palin and most Republicans in general.
Cosell: "so how long have you been throwing the spitball?", Perry: "I've never thrown the spitball, Howard". Cosell: "so when was the last time you threw the spitball?" Perry: "I've never thrown the spitball". Cosell: "so how many times during a game do you throw the spitball?" Perry: "I don't throw the spitball". Cosell: "are you going to continue throwing the spitball for the rest of your career?" Perry: "I don't throw the spitball, Howard".
In fact, the MLB Extra Innings package is worth the price simply to listen to the Sox broadcast on NESN and Vin Scully doing the Dodgers.
Haven't watched, heard, listened to or even paid any attention to a Mariner game in years.
Posted by: jimg on October 3, 2008 04:58 PMYears ago when my wife and I were dating I used to listen to Niehaus call Mariner games during the long, lonely drives back to Seattle from Aberdeen in my old Pontiac. I could imagine everything that took place on the field thanks to Niehaus.
I'm so glad Niehaus got to the Hall of Fame. People who grow up in this high-tech environment don't appreciate the artistry of Vin Scully, Dave Niehaus, or Curt Gowdy who called that memorable 1976 World Series.
Posted by: Bill Cruchon on October 3, 2008 05:34 PMI've got a very nice picture of Dave, Mr. Speaker and myself. Framed it with an autographed copy of the House Resolution passed in his honor.
He wears a lot of gold. They pay him well. :)
Include Harry Kalas (still doing the Phils broadcasts) Marty Brennaman and the late Jack Buck in that group.
And occasionally - on Saturday games when the gawd-awful Mark Grace is yukking it up in the Fox studios - we get to hear Joe Garigiola doing Saturday evening color on D-Backs' home games.
