Voter Registration Deadline Tomorrow

If you have not yet registered to vote in Washington, register today! Many other states also have a deadline of Friday or Saturday.

Also, if you're in Washington, sorry the Mariners are so terrible, but how about Tacoma native Jon Lester, huh? In the last year he's battled back from cancer, won the clinching game of the World Series, thrown a no-hitter, and even tossed a one-hit complete game shutout in Yankee Stadium. And last night, he became only the third Red Sox pitcher ever to win a playoff game with no earned runs or extra-base hits allowed (Burce Hurst and Babe Ruth are the others).

Go Sox!

1. Just in from Rasmussen:
Gregoire and Rossi Tied in Washington's Gubernatorial Race
Friday, October 03, 2008
The race for Washington's next Governor is now a tie. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in the state finds incumbent Christine Gregoire and challenger Dino Rossi each attracting 48% of the vote.

Gregoire is viewed favorably by 51% and unfavorably by 47%.

Very bad for Gregoire since the Dems have had a huge bounce the past 2 weeks. And this is all the better she can do.

2. Almost forgot to mail in the registrations for all my imaginary friends. Oh wait, this isn't Obama's Chicago. Doggonit!

3. Lester's a good story. Bet they're feeling better about not losing him in that potential Santana deal.

That said, Epstein did screw up when he made that Gagne deal. For a terrible half a season by Gagne, they gave up Gabbard, who has been only average for Texas, but also David Murphy, who has put up similar numbers to JD Drew at a tiny fraction of the cost of his $14 million salary.

4. Keeping with the swatter's theme with Eric, he is walking the talk. Swatter is not, I repeat not, going to remind his niece/daughter to remember to register to vote since she is more Obama friendly. Swatter will bring the subject up after the deadline is passed.

And the swatter is usually the first to encourage everyone to register to vote and to vote. But, not this election.

5. Palouse, yeah, I was angry about the Gagne deal right away. We gave up Gabbard and Murphy for *nothing.* Even at the time I thought Gagne was nothing.

Historical fact: Gagne was one of only TWO players to not return from the Sox World Series roster to the roster on Opening Day 2008, IIRC. I forget the other one. And people wonder how they made it back to the postseason ... :-)

7. What is worse is that I believe the Sox brass knew Gagne was a juicer before they made the trade, and still made the deal. I think that was in the Mitchell report. I didn't like that deal either, nor the Drew signing. But at least they held on to guys like Youk, Ellsbury and Pedroia. Sometimes, it's the deals you don't make...Bay looks like a good deal so far, for both teams.

Stark thinks it's a possibility Bay might be dealt in the off season, possibly for Matt Holiday. I don't really like that deal either, mainly for salary reasons.

8. Palouse, IIRC, the Sox brass knew he WAS one, but believed he was no longer one. Which while not great, is not as bad as what, say, the Yankees did many times.

I do like the Drew signing a lot more than that deal. Drew is a good player and good guy, and has had a nice season. Not worth what we paid maybe, but that's baseball.

9. Yeah, half the Yankees' team from their last title was on the juice. :)

I don't know if Drew is a good guy, but I know Phillie fans don't agree.

Drew's been stealing money the past 3 years (not Carl Pavano level stealing, but still). He's been paid $35 million over that time for averaging around .275 and 17 HR.

10. Vote early and OFTEN.

11. Bavasi is an idiot. I could put together a better team using nothing but NW players than the Mariners have assembled with their $100,000,000+ payroll. Grady Sizemore OF, Justin Morneau 1B/DH, Tim Lincecum SP, Jon Lester SP, Jason Bay OF, Rich Harden SP, Ryan Dempster SP, Kevin Gregg RP, Jacoby Ellsbury OF, Jeremy Guthrie SP, Aaron Rowand OF, Nick Hundley C, Matt Tuiasosopo 3B, Willie Bloomquist 2B, Lyle Overbay 1B/DH, Jeff Francis SP. I am only missing a SS. I guess we could trade a SP for one.

12. Too bad we're not like Ohio where ACORN is rounding up drunks and vanpooling them to same-day registration and voting RIGHT NOW!... Oh, maybe I should not give King County Elections and the Dems any ideas.

13. Dang you pudge! You know as well as I that every Republican has already registered.

It's the dimbulbs on the left that often don't have a clue about how or where to register to vote. That's what all those get out the vote drives you see every election are about. They are desperate attempts to register the ignorant, the insane, and the terminaly stupid whom all reliably vote left if they can remember when they are supposed to vote and where. Thank heavens most of them never actually vote.

I'm just teasing. I'm pretty sure unregistered leftists don't come to this site. Not to worry.

Here's a true story though. I worked at a non-profit facility in Seattle's central area back during the 2004 election. I kid you not, people called up on election day asking "is this the poll?",(actually it sounded more like "is this the poe?"), but we would not want to be politically incorrect.

I'm a die-hard Red Sox fan too. I remember sitting in my little rented Bellingham room back in 1975 screaming at my dinky black and white TV while the Sox duked it out with the Reds.

14. All this baseball talk makes me think about how Couric hammered at Palin the other day.

I never saw it and can't confirm it but I used to hear this story of Howard Cosell interviewing Gaylord Perry who was often accused of throwing a spitball: It may not have ever happened but it does remind me of the way the media treats Palin and most Republicans in general.

Cosell: "so how long have you been throwing the spitball?", Perry: "I've never thrown the spitball, Howard". Cosell: "so when was the last time you threw the spitball?" Perry: "I've never thrown the spitball". Cosell: "so how many times during a game do you throw the spitball?" Perry: "I don't throw the spitball". Cosell: "are you going to continue throwing the spitball for the rest of your career?" Perry: "I don't throw the spitball, Howard".

15. While I'm not what would be considered a Red Sox fan (Go Blue!), I will admit Orsillo and Remy make their games worth watching. Best broadcast team in the biz.

In fact, the MLB Extra Innings package is worth the price simply to listen to the Sox broadcast on NESN and Vin Scully doing the Dodgers.

Haven't watched, heard, listened to or even paid any attention to a Mariner game in years.

16. Vote early and VERY often!!!

17. And as much as the Mariners stink Dave Niehaus should not be overlooked as the fantastic announcer he is.

Years ago when my wife and I were dating I used to listen to Niehaus call Mariner games during the long, lonely drives back to Seattle from Aberdeen in my old Pontiac. I could imagine everything that took place on the field thanks to Niehaus.

I'm so glad Niehaus got to the Hall of Fame. People who grow up in this high-tech environment don't appreciate the artistry of Vin Scully, Dave Niehaus, or Curt Gowdy who called that memorable 1976 World Series.

18. Oops, I meant 1975 World Series!

Posted by: Bill Cruchon on October 3, 2008 05:40 PM
19. Agreed on Niehaus.

I've got a very nice picture of Dave, Mr. Speaker and myself. Framed it with an autographed copy of the House Resolution passed in his honor.

He wears a lot of gold. They pay him well. :)

Include Harry Kalas (still doing the Phils broadcasts) Marty Brennaman and the late Jack Buck in that group.

And occasionally - on Saturday games when the gawd-awful Mark Grace is yukking it up in the Fox studios - we get to hear Joe Garigiola doing Saturday evening color on D-Backs' home games.

20. Well, maybe I should rip JD Drew before every game, eh Pudge? Quite a game last night.

21. Voter registration deadline only affects 38 counties. King County keeps registering (Democrats)up until vote closing.
