Retarded People

I saw on the news that disabled people convened at the Monroe County legislature in Rochester, NY to protest someone's use of the word "retard."

It made me think of this video. The video is not safe for work, despite being comprised entirely of audio samples from Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer and Barack Obama. That's just how they roll.

1. considering that the AAMR (american assoc. on mental retardation) didn't change their name until just over 2 years ago, the confusion surrounding the use of the word retarded is somewhat understandable.

republicans regularly retard the function of government.

although, no mention of the shameless images being virally sent by rejects on the right, aka air force one's tail number, pudge?

2. mike, I had no idea what you were talking about until I Googled just now. And no, why would I mention that, when it has nothing to do with what I said, or what the video says IMO, which is that words can be taken as offensive when they shouldn't be? Obviously, using "N166ER" in reference to the President is intended to be offensive toward black people, so that's completely beside the point here.

People who get upset if I say that the President's view of health care is "retarded" are just looking for reasons to be offended.

3. I understand the new term is "intellectually disabled". Breyer had better get with the program.

This video also reminds me of when Al Gore thought he was being funny when he said "extra chromosome right wing".

4. Well then, Mike, can we call black people negroes or colored people without worry?

The term "retarded" is now considered offensive; mentally challenged is the now-correct term.

5. Since "retarded" used to be Down Syndrome people but now is used to refer to anyone acting stupidly, does it really matter.

Its like someone with an IQ under 90 reacting to my using the words idiot, imbecile or moron.

6. Shame on you who make fun of the handicapped.

My "retarded" uncle once loaned me money for a car when my own parents were bankrupt. He worked for many years in the lumber industry, green chain and cleanup, long before entitlements came about.

7. joebandmember: perhaps I missed it, but no one here made fun of any handicapped people.

8. there is no reason to continue mocking people with special needs. enough already. this guy shouldn't have used the word retard to describe someone he thinks is stupid. it's just demeaning and hurtful to people with special needs. They totally get it. They understand that you are mocking them yet they don't have the ability to stand up for themselves for the most part. What is it about the word that give you such pleasure? No one is trying to take away your right to use it. We're just asking for a little decency for our family members and the hope that you will consider what we ask.

9. This is why the Reagan Diaries is the most important book in the world right now. Contrast real leadership with a hand puppet pimp from the Chicago machine.

It took Jimmy Carter to elect Reagan. This generation gets and deserves Obama and his potty mouth posse of race bating gangsters and thugs.

10. Mike: there is no reason to continue mocking people with special needs.

Correct. But no one IS doing that.

enough already.

Enough of what?

this guy shouldn't have used the word retard to describe someone he thinks is stupid. it's just demeaning and hurtful to people with special needs. They totally get it. They understand that you are mocking them ...

Except ... no one is mocking them. Using the word "retard" to describe someone is not mocking people who are developmentally disabled. It just isn't. What about the words moron, idiot, imbecile, cretin? By your same logic, those words also are mocking people who are developmentally disabled. But they aren't!

What is it about the word that give you such pleasure?

What makes you think it is about pleasure? Maybe the same thing that makes you falsely believe anyone is mocking anyone else.

We're just asking for a little decency for our family members and the hope that you will consider what we ask.

And the rest of us are asking for a little sanity and understanding. If you can't even realize the fact that someone using the word "retarded" is probably not mocking anyone, then you are part of the problem.

11. Postings such as this make me long for Stefan Sharkansky and meaningful discussions on truly important issues. Or perhaps Puget Sounders no longer have such issues....

12. Oh yeah because Stefan never posted silly things. :)

13. It is an important issue. A famous conservative likes to say "words matter." Has "retarded" indeed moved, as Pudge thinks, from being a word that demeans a certain class of disabled people to being a word that merely refers to those who are disabled, shall we say, through every fault of their own? I hear it used all the time in casual conversation and it never causes me to think less of anyone other than (possibly) the supposed dumbass under discussion. You may never hear me say this again, but I think I agree with Pudge.

14. I believe I, too, agree with pudge on this "issue", an issue which means little to me, even though I have a developmentally disabled brother (I am his guardian) and a Down Syndrome neice. Words are just words. Some are uttered without malice or consideration of possible misunderstanding. Others are meant to hurt or demean innocent, defenseless people. It is the intent of the heart and mind behind peoples' words that matters.

15. You know what is "retarded".

Conservatives who get mad at Reichert only to have them back on their shows a month and a half later.

Kirby talks a good game but he has always backed the establishment in the end.

Remember how he stabbed Carlson in the back. Not that I am a particular fan of Carlson but Wilbur should have supported him when he was fired over I-200.

We must stop giving people credit for "Talking a Good Game". That's easy. What's hard is to find someone who actually puts the conservative principles he promotes into practice.

All too often, Kirby hasn't.

16. A month and a half. Just enough time for the shiner to fade.

I wonder if he brought Kirby some flowers and candy.

Want to bet that Kirby is going to "run into another door" soon.

But this time he promised it will be different. He's changed. He really does love us conservatives. He really does.
