Huskies Tied for PAC 10 Lead

Number 3 USC 13, upstart UW 16. One of the all time great Husky football games was played today. In my 35 years of attending Husky games, from the James Gang through lawyer coach Rick the Sleaze to record setting (0 and 14) Willingham, I've never seen such enthusiasm from the team and the crowd. The new T-shirt "Bark for Sark" speaks it all. There have been times when fans have gone on the field but the last one I remember was Cougars celebrating an Apple Cup win. This Saturday, USC's ball three seconds on the clock, the Huskies put the final hurt on the Trojan offense and the stadium went nuts. Fans poured onto the field in a joyous frenzy. I don't think there has ever been a celebration as large as this, certainly not in my 35 years. The Dawgs are back!

1. So, what exactly is a "USC"?

2. Boy, are they EVER back! I could hardly believe what I was seeing. Especially as the 4th quarter wound down and everyone started to see that hey--they really COULD put the Trojans away for good and win this thing! You hear talk about "the great Husky wins" of past, but this one ranks at very near the top of great all-time wins for the Dawgs.

I love college football, and I'm certainly no football expert, but during the game even I began to notice that these "renewed" Huskies were playing with much more alertness and were noticeably faster in everything they did than even two weeks ago. And even before I heard post-game talk that the coaches were heavily drilling into their heads that "it's all about the ball" I could actually SEE that thought process happening during the game what with their focus on shaking the ball loose from USC ballcarriers and fumble recovery alertness/quickness. What a difference the new coaching is making---WOW! We have a defense now!!

3. At the risk of being a spoilsport... the win was great, but this wasn't the USC of storied fame. This team is a shadow of USC teams of the past. The D played well today. It's just like the 'hawks... Let's not get too wound up over a win over the Rams... a team even worse than Seattle last year, and looking every bit as bad this year, if not worse.

I now return you to your previously unscheduled unbridled Husky joy this Saturday night.

6. Man, posting comments to this site is slow. Sorry about the impatient "post" clicking.

7. Just read an interesting bit on the Fox Sports site that was written before today's game. It reports that LSU ,who beat the Huskies 31-23 two weeks ago, has been getting crap from people who tell them they should have beaten the Huskies by a bigger margin.

They said they would take more than a passing look into today's game to see if the Huskies are/were any better than they thought the Huskies were when LSU beat them. Clearly, LSU will be absolved from any misgivings people may have about their win over the Huskies, and may start feeling downright fortunate to have faced the Huskies when they did, rather than today when they are two weeks more improved.

8. Reminds me of the time my alma mater Minnesota (ranked no. 154) beat Michigan (ranked No.1) in 1977 to win the Little Brown Jug in a 16 - 0 shutout!

9. I was a long time Husky fan during my time at NAS Whidbey Island and after retiring back to Montana. I live in Kansas now and all I get is highlights on ESPN. I still have a 3 Dog Bowl Sweatshirt that I got in 92!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

10. I was at the game and I heartily second warren's comments. The defense was excellent and the offense did a good job of not losing possesion so much the defense was exhausted.

However, it does need to be said that the usc quarterback was the second stringer and usc was missing their great safety as well. Not to take away from this historic win, just suggesting that I will manage my expectations for future games

So? I didn't see Steve Emtman, Mark Brunell, Reggie Williams or Corey Dillon suited up for Washington, either.

They brought this year's team. We brought this year's team. 16-13. Washington. Not quite sure what your point is other than your self-admitted 'spoilsport' label.

12. The win was BIG...period! However the best the Huskies can hope for this year is 4 or 5 wins. The Pac Ten is tough...period and any team is capable of big upsets at any time (look at Oregon this week-end). Consistancy in the Pac 10 is near impossible. USC's biggest worry is Calif.; the Huskies will win again...sadly the Cougs will not!
And as for the 'Hawks...injuries will prevail and they will SUCK!

13. I am a PAC10 fan and am happy for UW - we live in Seattle. Major USC fan - was dissapointed with their performance yesterday, but happy for Locker who is a stand-up guy.

For those who watched the Seahawks lose today - and will point to the injuries - don't forget that 3 of the best 5 position players didn't play for USC yesterday!

14. Both the LSU and USC games have shown that there is a new energized Husky atmosphere. No way could Tyrone Willingham get that kind of effort from this team. Coach Sark and Nick Holt are like a shot of adrenaline that this program has needed for years.

15. I hate it when Trojans fail under pressure.
Sigh...
Forever a Coug Fan.

16. I am still a bit hoarse from screaming so much. Not that I'm a huge Husky fan (Go Wisconsin!) but I do so appreciate it when USC loses. We'll have to wait and see how good USC really is. They didn't look all that impressive against OSU, and I suspect they were quite over-ranked (not that the rankings mean all that much this early). And Corp made a LOT of mistakes.

But hey, a win's a win.

17. To those that are rationalizing the USC loss by pointing out that "This wasn't the USC of old. . . " or whatever, the sports line on the game was that the Huskies were a three touchdown underdog. Three touchdowns. Apparently they guys who gamble real money on this kind of thing felt otherwise.

Say what you will, it was a good win for the Pups.
