That's what I got from his speech yesterday to the Rotary Club of Seattle Skyline. I didn't keep precise count but he must have uttered the ubiquitous liberal buzz words "social justice" at least half a dozen times and he seemed quite proud of his time in Chicago training to be a "community organizer" with the Industrial Areas Foundation, the same group that trained Barack Obama.
And speaking of THE ONE, he said that his campaign for the White House, on which Mallahan volunteered, "reignited his passion for public service." He also ripped on Reaganomics and said, if elected, he'd reempower neighborhoods like the Rainier Valley and South Park to organize.
But to be fair it wasn't all unicorns and puppy dogs. Mallahan did get into some more meat and potatoes ideas for improving Seattle and quality fare it was. He wants to restart the gang unit to help combat the rising crime rate. He wants to do away with the head tax on businesses and states that he won't seek to raise taxes. And my personal favorite, he feels that City Hall has been spending way too much money on "consulting", which not only has the obvious effect of wasting resources but, he points out, allows city employees to shelter themselves from any decision making or the results of those decisions and instead just blame the consultants.
He also carried himself a lot more professionally, showed up on time and wore a clean suit, more than I can say for Mike McGinn, who spoke to the group a month or so ago. Then again, Obama seemed pretty polished on the campaign trail.
