A Musical about Obama?

There are t-shirts, bobble heads and books galore written about our new president. They've even come out with a Chia Obama. But hold on to your hats, kids, because now, for the first time ever, it's...

OBAMA THE MUSICAL!

Yes, "Obama on My Mind" a "farcical comedy" about life on the Obama campaign trail, makes its US Premiere tonight at the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center.

At least this one, being dubbed a farcical comedy, seems to be a bit closer to the truth.

Has anyone besides me picked up on the similarities between Obama and Spaceballs? I think the only thing they haven't covered yet is "Obama the Flamethrower."

1. The entire cult of personality rise of Obama is a 'farcial comedy', as we're finding out month by month. The next 4 years will serve as a reminder to our posterity that the man or woman you elect in as CEO of the country should probably have some experience and the smarts to do the job. Instead, we have an administration more concerned with going to war with a Cable television news channel rather than tackling other pressing domestic or foreign policy matters.

Oh well, live and learn.

2. For anyone who attends the musical, be sure to wear your Che Guevarra T-shirt while you carry your Chia Obama in to this event.

5. Rick: Absolutely, however, it's more to that. When we choose our "CEO", we also need to make sure he has a good team assembled. This will help to overcome shortcomings and create a balanced team. What happened this time was that the cult of Obama made so many people forget where he was coming from, who he had assembled (Rahm, Axelrod, Jarrett, Teleprompter, etc) and what he stood for. Now we are stuck with a person in a job way beyond his paygrade and will pay for it.
I can't think of any president who had everything the country was looking for, but most grew into their position and had a good team.
This time, we are all paying for it.

6. Is this like the "Capital Steps" of a few years ago?

7. I am sorry, I cannot afford such entertainment.

I am unemployed, a victim of Hope and Change.

There is a greater chance I will have government health care or a Nobel Prize before I find a job.

So no live theater for me.

Besides I am living the Obama nightmare...

9. I wonder if they'll give out complimentary Compazine and Immodium with each ticket or if you have to bring your own. Might be a good way for some cute and clever RIGHT THINKING vendor to make some Christmas money!

10. Were they serving Red Kool Aid before and after the premiere??? This is reminiscent of the plays that were made to honor Chairman Mao Tse Tung in Red China.

This crap will end. Mark my words.....

12. Ha ha hehhh hummmm grrrr! I saw the play. It was a very dignified and funny affair.

Now. All the little quips and wittily worded yet aesthetically vapid comments you people are making amuse me. But I am easily amused. Perhaps you don't understand that it's just a musical. It is a work of art. It's entertainment. It's not trying to deify Obama. It's only mildly slanted towards leftist politics. It's a goddamn musical. You all should get out more.

P.S. there was no red Kool-Aid (you forget the hyphen), but some veggies and cider.

13. Looking from the photo it certainly does look like they are drinking Kool Aid and quite a bit of it. It's not art but crap, the deification of the Dear Leader. I get out quite a bit but will not spend my "change" on such garbage. I would rather go out to the gun range with my Bible in tow. I am sure you would not be making such favorable comments about a play that was slanted slightly to the right about Bush and Cheney. Imagine the play "Bush and Cheney" debuting in Seattle. The outrage would be most evident and the liberals would be trying to torch the theatre. There would be an investigation launched by some liberal kook to top it off. I doubt that there were any "right wing hate monger and Nazis" protesting at the premiere of Obama. Seattle is littered with "works of art" which include a statue of Lenin. This man murdered millions but the crunchie veggie eating Kool Aid drinkers of Seattle classified it as "art". Simply disgusting! On the same principle I would never go see a play about "O" as he is not worthy of art. I just blasphemed the Dear Leader! Oh no!

14. I have doubts about the authenticity of this musical. Adult "airheads" who are political sheeple in Seattle might like it. However, being an historian - I doubt that it delves into the truth much. The more music the better as long as it isn't gangsta rap.

That's a contradiction in itself because the thugocracy and the czars would best be portrayed by ganssta rap.

15. They made a movie about Bush. I didn't see any liberals burning film or braining theaters. Whether a subject is worthy of art is not the point of the art. You obviously never studied classical art. You have to look at the structure of the work itself. Read Plato. Read in general.

You have doubts about the authenticity of something you've never seen and know nothing about. While that oddly makes sense: you still prove yourself an idiot.

16. On the contrary, anyone who pays any change to see this waste of money performance is an idiot...In studying classical art in the USA - pop culture idealizing a dick-tator was never shown as an example of classical art. So maybe you attended an art school run by a totalitarian govt?

17. frugelkugel, KDS and Gydytojas astonish me with their occult powers.

And sad TrylyScrumptious has probably never patronized live theater, or he/she would know there are always ways.

In any event, I heartily recommend this show to friends of the left and right alike -- excepting the very few who are truly humorless.

18. Um, cy @ 15, yes they made a movie about Bush. Two I can think of.
One to blame him for 911 by Moore, the other to assassinate him. Why would the left behave badly over that?

Posted by: PC on October 24, 2009 05:14 PM
19. After hearing from those Obamanites that saw it and admittedly no not planning to see it, I can tell it is predominantly style and very little substance. The humor is likely politically correct thus boring or droll. For instance, do they say anything like "the ACORN doesn't fall far from the tree" ? Where might the proceeds to this play be going ? To lobby for Obamacare or Cap and Trade ?

It's not the person I despise, it is his ridiculous and obscene policies = they're killing what is a firm foundation in this county and he knows that. If he were to back off, there would be less chaos in everyday life and economic recovery would occur sooner.

20. Very good idea Michelle (#2). Or how about a Mao or Rev. Wright tee shirt? Excellent posts here.
The next installment of an Obama theater production should be a "Rocky Horror Picture Show"-like gig
where everybody can throw shoes or whatever suits them when an Obama look-alike appears in person or on the screen.

21. HA! frugel krugel. I called your response before you even said it.

I knew you would totally miss the context in which I referred to "classical art" and analysis. So again: The subject of the art isn't the focus, but it's structure and coherency. And in order to critique that you have to observe the work. Now I know you people think you're smart (and I can't tell you otherwise) for excreting your opinions on this play when all you actually know about it is that it has Obama's name in it.

So let's be perfectly honest. You nay-sayers don't like Obama and you don't like anything that's associated with him. Fine with me, but to criticize a work you've never seen and sit there all high horsed like you know something is ridiculous. This is my last post. God bless our president!

Posted by: Cy Muin on October 25, 2009 01:33 PM
22. You are entitled to excrete your opinion because you saw the play but we who won't aren't. You aren't being perfectly honest because you avoided answering any assertions about this production.

Would you have gone to see a production (if there was one) about GW Bush or Reagan if it were done in a favorable light ? What's good for the goose is good for the gander. My last post on this topic also.

Posted by: KDS on October 25, 2009 01:40 PM
23. KDS - The show isn't about Obama. Or Reagan, or Bush. Or any politician. Or politicians in general.

It's about the way people act when they hitch their emotions, ideals, and personal agendas to a political campaign. You've seen some of that, haven't you? (If not, what are you doing here?)

You can assert whatever assertions you want, but you're betting blind ... as blind as Oedipus.

p.s. There's no rap in the show either.

Posted by: RonK, Seattle on October 25, 2009 07:59 PM
24. #23 - Whatever, guy - I am not interested in seeing a musical that does what you said - it's just more political spin.

Posted by: KDS on October 26, 2009 10:03 AM
25. You folks just can not stand to have a PRESIDENT (different from your last "CEO" idiot in chief) who speaks in full sentences and is able to articulate complex thoughts, don't you? Maybe your skin tone is too light making you uneasy? Or is it that he can walk and chew gum at the same time unlike your savior Ms. Palin? Get used to this: YOU LOST, AND WILL CONTINUE TO LOSE because you just do not get it and will not listen to reason. Republicans have become known for what they are: a scourge on this planet.
