KING 5's poll on I-1053 gives us reason for optimism (55% "certain" to vote yes)

We're always hesitant to get too excited about polls, especially ones that come out in August. But it's hard to ignore KING 5's poll among likely voters showing 55% saying they are 'certain' to vote yes on I-1053 and only 18% certain to vote no. Pretty interesting breakdowns by demographic groups -- see here.

Cer-tain (adjective): free from doubt or reservation; confident; sure. It's pretty hard to change the vote of a voter who says they are 'certain' to vote for an initiative.

Lots of things can happen before November, of course, but it certainly does make intuitive sense that voters would strongly support I-1053:

1) They've already voted for the 2/3's requirement 3 times (and the courts have repeatedly rejected legal challenges to it)
2) Olympia arrogantly overturned Initiative 960 during this year's legislative session, repealing not just the 2/3's vote requirement for raising taxes, but also the sunshine provisions of I-960 (blocking transparency by hiding from the public the legislators' voting records and tax hike costs from appearing in the voters pamphlet)
3) Immediately following their elimination of the 2/3's requirement, Gregoire and the Democrats went on a whole-hog-tax-hiking-rampage, jacking up taxes $6.7 billion!!

Since 1993, Washington's had the 2/3's requirement. In those 17 years, during legislative sessions when it's been in effect, tax hikes were a last resort resulting in more reform and fewer taxes (for the two years following the passage of I-960, not a single tax was raised, despite $9 billion deficits). When Olympia suspends it (like this year), tax increases become a first resort with less reform and much higher taxes (again, $6.7 billion).

Let's bring back the protection Olympia took away and protect ourselves from job-killing, family-budget-busting tax hikes. Please vote YES on I-1053.

1. Yes, she has jacked up taxes, but not by 6.7B and the reason should be obvious. The projections do not take into account the effects of economic crime and punishment. Increased taxes punish producers and result in less production. Conversely reduced taxes result in more economic activity. Projections for revenue collections always skew high for tax increases and low for decreases.

The Democrats are sponsoring a national 'You may be Rich Sweepstakes.' Starts January 1st, congratulations, you will be a winner.

2. It isn't about what Gregoire has or hasn't done - it's about the fact that every single state legislator is a lying, thieving, sack of excrement. Yes, certainly: vote for the measure - but keep in mind that existing measures have been summarily ignored by these worthless b*****ds when they feel like ignoring them. If you want to make it stick, then vote out every single - no exceptions - member of the state legislature, and let's see if we can start over. (Don't tell me how good your legislator is: not he's/she's not. If they were any good, they'd have been quite public about the violation of 960 - and nobody was.)

6. And how many weeks before it gets thrown out for being unconstitutional like all the other crappy initiatives?
You're lucky, Timmy. Still a lot of people out there who haven't figured that out yet.

7. Indeed, these teabagger/carpetbagger republicans never learn a thing. Their PalinBrewer-caught-the-bumper of-the-car-now-what? candidates will sink the party
