More on the incident with Sandy Berger

foxnews.com has this article about the report from an internal investigation into Sandy Berger's removal of classified documents. Here are some of the more intresting parts of the inspector's notes:

Berger took a break to go outside without an escort while it was dark. He had taken four documents in his pockets.

"He headed toward a construction area. ... Mr. Berger looked up and down the street, up into the windows of the Archives and the DOJ (Department of Justice), and did not see anyone," the interview notes said.

He then slid the documents under a construction trailer, according to the inspector general. Berger acknowledged that he later retrieved the documents from the construction area and returned with them to his office.

"He was aware of the risk he was taking," the inspector general's notes said. Berger then returned to the Archives building without fearing the documents would slip out of his pockets or that staff would notice that his pockets were bulging.

The notes said Berger had not been aware that Archives staff had been tracking the documents he was provided because of earlier suspicions from previous visits that he was removing materials. Also, the employees had made copies of some documents.

From what I gather this was not the first time Berger had taken documents from the National Archives. Of course he pleaded guilty and his big sentence was...... $50,000, ordered to perform 100 hours of community service and was barred from access to classified material for three years.

This guy should be behind bars and if he ever got out again, never be allowed near a classified document ever again. I am sure if it were you or I we would be behind bars, never to see the light of day again.

2. C'mon guys, take a breath it's just personal stuff. Had nothing to do with national security nothing at all. Also he hasn't been CONVICTED of anything! Right? No conviction means no crime!

3. But it's okay, because he's a democrat.

Seriously, I also read that the staff were hesitant to confront him because of 'who he was'. Clearly, the privileged ones in WA get away with stuff you or I would get thrown in the slammer for.

4. If the penalty for this type of violation included an immediate loss of all government pensions and a lifetime ban from receiving any government contracts or positions it would act as more of punishment. You can bet good 'Ole Sandy's gonna be serving in some capacity for the Dem's. Isn't it true he even get's his security clearance back? Pathetic.

5. Huh? @ #4

Yes he does get his security clearance back after three years. This means he will have it back either around Oct 08 or Jan 09. What timing. How much you want to bet Hillary would just love to have him on her staff if (god forbid)she got elected.

6. It depends on what the definition of stealing classified documents is.

7. And

Just who do you think sent him in there to launder away those documents?

Bet ya the last name begins with a "C", and the first name with W or H.

8. Sandy Berger should spend some time in jail. And all the folks at the State Department, Pentagon, CIA, and FBI who have been stealing and leaking classified material to the press should be outed, charged, and go to jail. I am sure the Administration knows who they are. And the media outlets who actually printed classified material should be charged. And the Congressmen/women and Senators who are traveling to enemies of this country, in the face of the President's admonitons to not do so, in order to accomplish diplomatic agreements, should be charged with treason and spend a LOT of time in pink underwear. I am astounded and saddened by the lack of reaction by the Justice Department and American public on these obvious acts of treason by those who are acting only out of a lust to return power to the liberal Democrats. What shallow, thoughtless ambitions. They are certainly not concerned with the security of our country, or the future of our children.

9. Hi Katomar,

Check out the Justice Department Prosecutor on the Berger case hand selected by the Bush Whitehouse. He is a prosecutor famous for letting people walk with easy plea bargins ... appointed by Bush by the way. High Level Republicans did not want to make an issue of the Berger case, Why? I don't know.

10. Do a Google search on Noel Hillman. He seems to not only go easy on top politicians off but even talks very favorably of the prosecuted as they plea bargin easy deals. And Bush just nominated him to become a Federal Judge in early this year.
