Everyone knew the torture was happening but few refused to take a stand. After years of war and protest the nation was tired and most chose just to look the other way. Many agreed that it should be called something else, after all, the United States does not torture. The President had met many time with his legal counsel who assured him the courts would uphold what was necessary. A few in Congress arose in anger but they were in the minority and powerless to do anything. Some later claimed they were aware it was an option but had no idea it was actually being used. Those who admitted they knew it was happening defended the practice as necessary to defend our freedom.
The torture took on several different forms. Some were exposed to a chemical bath, others had steel clamps put on their heads. The worst they say was the noise. It started off as a mere distraction but soon grew in volume causing earsplitting pain. Along with the noise came the wind. As it reached it's intensity the pain became unbearable. Many screamed but no one heard their cries. First it was a hand or perhaps a foot that was ripped from their flesh. The lucky ones died quickly. Some did not. Those who struggled on were killed by other means, their screams silenced forever.
Hearings were demanded but everyone knew it was just political posturing. Those who performed the torture could not be prosecuted because they were just doing their jobs. Some suggested we should investigate those who wrote the legal opinions. Those who demanded that the torture stop were scoffed at by the mainstream media, painted as right wing extremists. Many looked to the Liberals for the answer, the party who says they seek justice for all. I feel much better now that they told me this torture thing they renamed abortion was all just a big lie made up by the Conservatives. Besides, my President has assured the world that the United States does not torture. He would not lie to me.
